Zaurus - pdaXrom / Which Wpa-compatible Card To Buy?
« on: April 26, 2007, 10:42:02 pm »
I've got a Symbol Spectrum24 LA-4137 WiFi card right now.  My old wireless router only supports WEP, and I'm pretty sure the CF card can't be made to support WPA, either.  So, I'm considering upgrading both.

What would you recommend as a good, low-power CF WiFi card that supports WPA?  I've heard that my current Symbol card is pretty good as far as power consumption, and I'd prefer to invest in a new card that is also frugal on power.  I don't believe 802.11g is an option for CF cards on pdaXrom, or I'd definitely go that route.

I've been trying to follow the various threads on wireless cards, but it would be nice to just hear some recommendations from people who are happy with the cards they're using.

Thanks!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Would The La-5127 Work W/ Pdaxrom?
« on: March 26, 2007, 11:01:08 pm »
Has anybody seen the Symbol LA-5127?  And do you think there's any chance that it would work with PdaXrom?

Some of the "features and benefits"
# Wi-Fi® Certified WPA2 ™ Enterprise security offers secure connectivity with broad network interoperability
# Windows CE and LINUX versions allow OEMs to easily customize drivers for proprietary operating systems

Also check out the specs tab or the PDF, which include pictures of the external antenna connections.  I get the impression that this does not have an internal antenna, however.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any place that carries this item.  The following excerpt seems to imply this may not be available for retail sale:

Accelerate time-to-market—now and in the future
Available uniquely to the OEM market, the LA-5127 comes with a comprehensive development kit, including:
    * Linux or Windows firmware and code files
    * Application programmer's interface development guide (API)
    * Driver programming guide
    * Host interface document
    * Integration guide
    * User's guide
    * Release notes

Your developers can easily customize and port the API and drivers for Linux and Windows CE to proprietary operating systems, and Motorola's OEM support team can work directly with your designers. Motorola can help you leverage the LA-5127's regulatory approvals by providing software to facilitate regulatory testing, uploading Motorola-proprietary information to labs and regulatory bodies and, in some cases, even using your antennas as part of our regulatory certifications.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Looking For Short Usb Mini-a To Mini-b Cable
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:14:00 pm »
I'm building a sort of mini "docking station" for my C1000, which will supply power and have a USB hub.  I need a short USB OTG mini-A to mini-B cable for connecting the Z to the hub.  This type of cable does not appear to be very popular and the shortest I've found thus far is 1.5m.  15cm (6-in) would be more than enough for my purposes and I don't want loops of extra cable hanging off.

Does anyone know of a source for something like this?  I could custom order, but the min order for one site I found is $100 and I doubt I'll find another vendor that's much cheaper.

If this cable does not exist, would it be practical to build one?  I'm not familiar with USB cables or if there are tight specs on the type of conductors, shielding, etc.

Thanks!

Deals and Great Z Buys / Transcend Ultra Speed 4gb Sd - Us$43
« on: February 06, 2007, 10:09:00 pm »
Newegg has the Transcend Ultra Speed 4GB SD Card for US$42.99.

From the Transcend site:

Features
- Amazing data transfer rates: Up to 150X speeds (22.5MB/sec)
- Supports Error Correcting Code (ECC) to detect and correct errors
- Supports In System Programming (ISP) to load firmware
- Support power down and sleep modes
- Mechanical Write Protection Switch
requirements
- Lifetime Warranty.

Not a bad price.  I'm kicking myself for recently picking up a slower 4GB card for about the same price.

Deals and Great Z Buys / Relatively Cheap Usb Docking Station
« on: January 29, 2007, 06:51:33 pm »
I found this item listed on Geeks.com.  I'm wondering if something like this would be supported on the Z.  I believe I've usually seen similar USB docking stations listed for at least twice as much.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / I Need A User Manual
« on: December 04, 2006, 08:04:33 pm »
If I remember correctly, there's a bug with the Input Setup tool in beta3, so I was trying to decipher some of the code in order to get the Calendar, Address, & Home buttons mapped to some apps.  When I got to the /mnt/smb/etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml file, I noticed that there are keys defined for switching desktops!

I had no idea that pdaXrom supported multiple desktops!  And I had never hit the Ctrl-Alt-Left/Right keys to accidentally discover this.  Am I the only one who didn't know about this?

Now I'm wondering how many other cool features I'm completely unaware of.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / Newbie Considering C1000
« on: March 29, 2006, 11:05:39 pm »
My old PDA is dying and I need a replacement.  I've been using the Palm platform for several years (Handera 330, specifically), but I'm seriously considering a C1000.  I considered getting a low-end Palm just for PIM and a couple utilities, but I feel I'll be losing a lot of functionality going that route.

I use Linux at home, but I've heard mixed reviews about PIM apps on the Zaurus.  What can I expect from the C1000 in terms of performance and ease of use?

Another reason I'm considering the switch is that I'm already invested in SD & CF memory and CF accessories from my old PDA.  It looks like my Symbol WiFi and my Targus modem cards will work, but I haven't seen much about my Kingston CIO10T ethernet card.  Does anyone know whether the Kingston card is compatible?

Another question about the CF:  It definitely looks like the C1000 has a CF slot that will accept IO devices, but I've read a couple times that the C1000 is missing the CF connector and associated chipset that the C3000 has.  Can I assume this is an internal slot that would contain the HDD on the C3000?  Since I'll have to order this from an importer, I'd like to understand what these "missings" refer to.

And since this is a Japanese market product which is re-flashed to support an English interface, am I going to encounter vestiges of the Japanese OS?  I would probably be annoyed if there are significant items in the OS that I can't read and which would inhibit my use of the device.

This is a great forum and I've found it very helpful.  Thanks in advance for your responses.
