Cosmo Communicator - CoDi / Cover Display Subforum?
« on: January 21, 2020, 08:09:57 am »
I'll be surprised if it's anything more complicated than a UART, frankly.  I've had a Raspberry Pi talking to an Armada 370 at 1.5Mb/s or so over a bog-standard serial port, which goes to show you can get some serious bandwidth out of these things -- a tad quicker than the usual 9600 or 115200 baud.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Firmware update

Oooh.  You seem to be right about the CoDi being more responsive.  I hadn't noticed; it's been almost unusable for me.

It'll be interesting to see what the update to that brings, allegedly tomorrow.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Firmware update

The IGG negativity has died down a lot since devices started seriously shipping beyond Japan.  It's mostly down to around half a dozen people now, who do seem to have been left at the back of the queue for some reason.

I've had mine since late November, and I have to say I love it.  It's an excellent device.

Cosmo Communicator - General Discussion / Scam?

Well, they've just released a firmware upgrade for the thing, so I doubt they've gone bust.  I hope not, anyway.

Seconded.  The hinge did for my Nokia 9500; the E90 was much, much more robust (and Microsoft's shutting down of the licence servers did for that; Maps became functionally useless).  The Gemini / Cosmo hinges are much more like the 9500's than the E90's, unfortunately.

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / USB-C

HELP, please!

the right USB-C port on my Cosmo does absolutely nothing! Neither the power adapter nor any low power peripherie device (mouse) will be recognized while plugged in. Latest Android, no root.
Is the port defektive?

Mine won't charge if the cable is plugged in the wrong way around -- yes, this is a type-C which is allegedly immune to this problem, but it certainly makes a difference.  I've no idea if that also affects devices -- I don't own any USB-C devices, only hosts -- but it might be worth trying.

OK, I've a kept a running log of issues I've observed...
Code: [Select]
- Why do I frequently see "89" appear in things that recieve text input when I reopen
my Cosmo?   ....some sort of leftover debugging code?
I observed something similar on the Gemini: I'd find a control sequence had been typed when the thing was closed.

Tracked it down to a physical problem.  As the keys are proud of the base, they're all pressed down slightly when the lid is closed (hence the need for the very strong magnets to hold it together -- capable of wiping hotel room keycards in seconds), and if the OS doesn't notice quickly enough to turn the keyboard off, it'll sometimes enter spurious characters into the keyboard buffer.

Cosmo Communicator - Android / Configuring byobu (in termux) on Cosmo

Alas, ctrl-\ is a bad choice for the Gemini/Cosmo layout (backslash is Fn-3, so it's a three-finger salute).

Alas, Ctrl-\ is a bad choice for any terminal program, as by default it sends a SIGQUIT which will coredump the running process.  This gets awkward when you forget you're using something else and muscle-memory it...

Someone on Indiegogo has mentioned that the display itself will run Wear OS, acting as a standalone device, but no confirmation has been found yet, so at this point this is most likely a speculation.
Looking back at this old thread, I cannot help but wonder if this might be true?  Would be interesting for Planet Computers to release enough information on the cover display to do interesting things with it...
I'm fairly sure I read somewhere / saw in a video that it's FreeRTOS on an STM32-series microcontroller.

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / NFC / Payment Experiences?
« on: December 18, 2019, 04:35:15 pm »
Never use a debit card if you have an alternative solution: someone who manages to swipe your DC details can empty your bank account, which will cause direct debits and cheques to bounce.  You should get your money back, but possibly after an awful lot of trouble -- I know several ISPs will cancel their service if they're not paid on time, which you can't do if your account is empty.

With a credit card, all they can do is take money up to your credit limit, and you have a month to notice and fix it -- much, much safer.  Google Pay may mitigate the DC issue somewhat; I haven't looked into the implications seriously yet.

I tried it yesterday in Waitrose.  Still needs the thing open to work.

Works well, though.

Stick away...

The Google Pay app doesn't need to be working to make payments -- I have no idea of the mechanism, but it works -- so I suspect that won't make any difference.

No.  At least, it doesn't with the shipped firmware, and I forgot to test the update last night.  I doubt it does, though.

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / NFC / Payment Experiences?

It's the first phone I've owned with the functionality, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect.  Works well, though.

The only problem I've had to date was a carpark, with a NFC on entry (to clock you in) and NFC on exit (to clock you out and take payment).  In was fine, but out wasn't: the man at the end of the help button said it was fairly common with phones as the crypto takes ages -- something I've not seen on other payments, I must admit -- and just to hold it there for longer.  Every other transaction I've attempted has gone through about as quickly as with an NFC card, which makes me happy.

Cosmo Communicator - Hardware / Sharp corners when Cosmo is open

Mine's a marked improvement on the Gemini, which bit me on several occasions: getting the soft, fleshy parts of a finger trapped between the case and the cover when snapping the thing shut really *hurts*.
