You see, I told you all this would happen... I ordered my C860 yesterday, and now there are rumours of a new model with WiFi   Doh!

I'm in Watford.

Don't have a Z yet, though probably will buy an 860 in the new year... just a
pity it doesn't have WiFi & bluetooth... just my luck they will bring out a clamshell
model with those as soon as I've bought the 860!

Well I finally took the plunge and ordered an 860 with plethora of accessories today! Yipee!

Accessories / Charging Options

Hmmm, no replies to this, I'll detail how I think it works from what I've read, someone please tell me if I've got this wrong!

So, I believe that I can use a regular power adaptor (of correct voltage/polarity) to charge the C860.

Alternatively I can get a USB sync/charger cable and charge it that way.

Is that correct?

I still don't understand if there is any disadvantage in just using a USB sync/charger cable? Just wondering why the Z doesn't come with that way of charging it as standard?

Accessories / Charging Options

Hi,

I'm going to be importing a C860 through pricejapan.com to the UK. Clearly I'm going to need some way to charge it...

Does the C860 just use a 'normal' circular power plug for charging, so that I could use any, appropriate, DC power supply that I can buy? Or does it have some special connector?

I notice that some places sell a USB 'Sync & Charge' cable... so if I get one of those it will just charge from a USB port? Is there any disadvantage with that? (eg. does it take longer to charge this way?) I presume that the Zaurus comes with a USB sync cable, does that not charge it too?

That's certainly interesting. I didn't know that you could download later versions of the Opera browser for the Zaurus - when I checked the Opera website (www.opera.com), I couldn't see any Zaurus version available there... where is this available from?

Does anyone know if the other apps available in the Cacko ROMs are distributed freely, or legal in some other way?

Linux Issues / Call For Zync Plugin Developers

Firstly, thank you for what you are doing, I'm sure that there are a lot of people here who will appreciate some way to sync with Linux apps such as kdepim, evolution etc...

I just can't help thinking that OpenSync would be a much easier solution, which would provide quicker results, and would be much easier to maintain in the future.

It seems to me, that OpenSync would allow you (and anyone else that helps) to concentrate on the Zaurus side of things and getting that right. No need to worry about all the different PIM software out there as other developers will be able to take care of that. Also the infrastructure etc will all be done for you. And when Evolution changes something, well you should just be able to pick up the new Evolution plugin for OpenSync and off you go. If you continue with this project as-is then you'll constantly have to maintain plugins for all the different PIM software.

The pool of developers working on OpenSync is bound to be greater than those working on Zync, purely because OpenSync will have a much broader user base and hence interest will be naturally higher, does it not make sense to tap into this?

I do understand your issues with all the dependancies... I think this is one of the biggest problems for a lot of users with Linux... they try to install an app, find it needs x number of dependancies, each of which require x more etc etc... I've been there, and yes it's a pain... it's getting slightly easier with things like APT, but still. I still think that painful as this is though, it's still got to be easier than implementing, effectively, a duplicate of OpenSync...

Just my 2 cents... and caveat here - I don't even have a Zaurus yet!

Good luck with whatever you decide, and when I get my Z I may even be tempted to help...

I don't yet have a Zaurus, though I intend on having a C860 soon, and I've been playing around with QT on Linux desktop a bit so hopefully I will create some Zaurus apps once I have one!

We really need more of you.

I'm Matt, 29, living in the UK near London (well near Watford to be more precise).

Hi,

I was looking through the release notes of Cacko 1.22 and I notice that there are statements such as:

   - Using Opera 7.25 - stable release from from SL-C6000
   - Updated NetFront to version 3.1 (from C3000)
   - Added FileSearch utility (from C3000)

So, if I'm to understand right, Opera 7.25 has been taken from the official SL-C6000 ROM, and included in the Cacko release which can be used by SL-C860 users?

But is this legal?

I'm just thinking that if I bought a SL-C860, that doesn't give me the legal right to use apps which come with a SL-C6000 does it? (Assuming these apps are not freeware?)

That looks quite interesting. I did wonder about one of the Nokia communicator devices at one point, but the thing that put me off it (and the same with this device) is the screen form factor... not too keen on the fact that they are so much wider than they are tall...

Still interesting device... will be interesting to see what the L101 model is like when they get that one out... it says that it will have a larger keyboard so perhaps the screen will also be of different dimensions? Worth keeping an eye on...

General Discussion / Any New Zaurii Upcoming?

For me personally, I don't so much mind the fact that I have to use the CF slot for, say, a WiFi card. The only really annoying thing for me is that because I'd like both bluetooth and WiFi, I'm going to have to have two CF cards and switch them as required, carrying the other one around separately etc etc.

I'd also be pretty much happy if there was one CF card which had bluetooth and WiFi in it, but I don't see that happening really...
