Archos forum / Mobile Clone Dvd Upgrade

CloneDVDMobile New Version Works - - Corrects the 1GB problem.

I got home last night and tried out the new version CloneDVDMobile 1.1.1.0 with Harry Potter Goblet of Fire (longest movie I could think of that we own). Set it at max quality for the Archos 700 and it produced a file of 1.25GB. Moved the file to A700 and it recognized it as filesize 1.28GB and reports duration of 2 hr 37 mins. Start it in the video player and it shows duration of 2 hr 37 mins and plays it right through to the last credit.

KUDOS to SLYSOFT for responding to this and making it work right. I am a very happy owner of AnyDVD and CloneDVDMobile and recommend to anyone wanting to shift their DVDs to the their mobile device.

Archos forum / Archos 700 Video Playback Problems
« on: July 22, 2006, 08:37:16 am »
I found several references to the playback cutoff issue in this forum, the CDFreaks forum, and as comments to an article on Ask Dave Taylor (link below).  I appreciate Tim's tip on splitting files in CloneDVDMobile -- hadn't noticed this feature before.

I had been moving TV episodes (Boston Legal, Shield, etc) to the A700 and these tend to all convert at around 500MB and play fine - - so I hadn't noticed the issue until scanning the Internet today. I just converted The Bourne Identity at the highest quality setting and the .avi file came out at about 1.3GB and duration was indicated as 1 hr 58 mins. When I moved the file to the Archos 700 and checked file info, it also indicated the same approximate filesize and duration. However when you start the video player, it shows the end as 1hr 37 mins. After that the movie just stops and reverts back to the menu. I went back to the original DVD and the 1 hr 37 min mark happened to be in the middle of a chapter so I don't think that caused anything. I then started doing the math on the filesize and the times (1 hr 37 mins divided by 1hr 58 mins) and I am suspicious that the player only sees and stops at the end of the first gigabyte.

I then tried converting TalentedMrRipley which is longer in duration (2 hr 19 min) and set the quality so it would hit right around 1 GB. It actually came out at 954MB and the entire movie played right to the end. I have just now converted it again at the highest quality level setting and the file came out at 1.078GB. Both files say duration is 2 hr 19mins in file info screen on A700 but when I load the latest file in the video player, it shows end time as 2 hrs 13mins - - just cutting off at the end and again suggesting some type of video playback barrier around 1GB . If so, then I think Archos has a firmware bug and will need to address - - everyone is probably going to need to harass them to get them to take a look at it.

In the meantime, I will use Tim's suggested work around on grabbing a portion of the chapters in CloneDVDMobile and converting then grabbing remainder and converting and having two files.

Archos forum / Dvd Ripping Software
« on: July 22, 2006, 08:20:06 am »
I acquired an Archos700 about a month back and have been on the journey to figure out how to load DVD video. I came across an article on a website called Ask Dave Taylor which specifically addresses this subject. Link here:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_copy...chos_av700.html

The two software products he recommends - - AnyDVD and CloneDVDMobile - - both work well (cost about $50 or so for pair). These are supplied by Slysoft at www. slysloft.com.

I have moved a bunch of TV episodes with no problem and have been enjoying these on my treadmill and airplane flights. However as I scanned various forums (this one, CDFreaks, and even comments under Dave Taylor's article), there is a problem with longer movies. I used the two programs above to move The Bourne Identity today and the .avi file was about 1.3GB and indicated 1 hr 58 mins duration. When copied to the Archos700 (do this as a USB Drive), the file info will also show same length and duration, but when started in Video Player, it shows length as 1hr 37 mins - - the remainder is ignored. I think this may coincide with hitting a 1GB barrier or something which Archos will need to address.

For recording with the Archos700 directly from a video source using composite video, there is a 2GB file size limit because of FAT32 operating system - - but Archos700 is smart enough to close the first file and start a second one and so on.

Back on the DVD subject, there is a workaround available in CloneDVDMobile where you can cut down the number of chapters grabbed (I think it is on 3rd screen and shows scissors on bottom of preview window) so that you can grab the first set of chapters and convert and then grab remaining chapters and convert. Hopefully Archos will step in to figure it out soon. Everybody should start asking them to fix this -- I sent an email earlier today and will see if they respond.

With regards to two other forms of video movement that I would like -- DV video from a camcorder and MPEG2 video captured with a TV capture card, I am still on the journey to perfect this. The Archos is very fussy about the format of the .avi file - - video is MPEG4 (comes from an XVid or DivX converter) and audio is MP3 which is lower quality than some other forms. I am in process of trying AutoGordianKnot, IMTooMPEG4 encoder, and AllokMPEG4 Converter.
