Cxx0 General discussions / C-860 & Ambicom Wifi Card

A few months back I picked up an Ambicom WiFi card for my Zaurus.
<snip>
I can use AC power but I don't want to kill the battery prematurely. Is there some way to throttle the power consumption?

Thanks for any advice!

I use this card with my 860.  My opinion is that the battery lasts pretty well, an hour or more.  I guess it's just my expectation -- after using the Ambicom in my SL5500 (20 minutes of surfing).

2 suggestions:

-- Wifi draws a lot of juice from the battery, as you've noticed.  I've noticed that if I disconnect from the network, the battery % rises.  This must be because the high current draw of wifi drops the battery voltage.  Once I disconnect, the milli-amps drop to normal, and the voltage rises.  So taking a break now and then will extend your surfing time.  If you require continuous surfing, yes, plug the 860 in from time-to-time.

-- You can throttle the power by slowing down the CPU.  I'm using Cacko ROM.  Depending on your ROM, here's how to reduce power consumption:
tap on the battery icon in the system tray,
tap on the Frequency tab (looks like a red stoplight),
tap on "power saving".

Nokia Tablet / Successor Of The N800

As an N800 user, I say "yuck".  The camera on the N800, while currently pretty useless, is much better as an adjustable camera, rather than fixed as in the picture. Secondly, why on earth would they put the D-pad on the slider keyboard itself?  Much better to put it on the the outer shell as both the N770 and the N800 currently have it.   I actually don't mind the slider keyboard as a concept.

Hey, rickh, how do you feel about the full screen touch-screen keyboard on your N800?  I'm considering the N800 now that it has skype, but wondered about text input.  I'm a touch typist and the idea intrigues me.  I love the clamshell keyboard on my 860, compared to my sl5500.

Yes, I've noticed that too, speculatrix....

BUT, still wondering if people are really using Newts these days or is it more for a novelty/collector sake now?

pdahero, just out of curiousity, what do you use your Newt for nowadays??

Used to have a MP2100....was very nice at the time....
look on ebay at closed auctions and you'll see that 2000 and 2100s still sell for well over US$200!

I still use my Newton because of the persistence of the data.  It really is good for entering random information that I need to remember, and it's easy to search and find what I want, years later.  When the battery dies, no problem, nothing gets lost, just plug it in months later, the information is still stored.

Sure, it's a bit heavy, it's grayscale, it's a bit slow.  But it is still useful.

Hi there - completely off topic, but I am wondering if you user name is a reference to the late great Newton Message Pad 2100....?

But of course.  I still keep my messagepads, too much info in them to stop using them.  An MP100, an MP2000, and an MP2100.

Oh, sorry, I was in too much of a hurry when I wrote the first post.  More details -- it has Cacko 1.23 ROM loaded on it.  So does that do something for me?

I have the SL5500 software for the Sharp ROM 2.37, and I also downloaded the newer SL5500 software for Sharp ROM 3, which sync's differently.  Will one of those work?  I don't have a manual or software, so I didn't want to load drivers in the wrong order and screw things up.

Hi,

I see the USB drivers at zaurususergroup.org, and downloaded that.  But I get errors when I try to download the CD files, desktop and synchronize stuff.

Specifically, I just got a beautiful C860 off ebay, I'm graduating from a 5500.  I want to synchronize with my work Outlook.  The links from Foxdie at zaurususergroup are broken.  Can anyone point me to a place that has the software?  Is there an issue from Sharp about providing these?

TIA
