Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Cisco Vpn Client On Oz

I'm trying to connect my SL-5500 running Hentges 3.5.4.1/OPIE to my WLAN at school. The school is running a Cisco VPN over the wireless which is required for any net access. The install instructions for Linux are listed here

I located the file they are talking about here cisco for linux.

The 2nd question the install script asks is where the directory containing the linux source code is to build the VPN kernel.

Anyone know where they are located on the Zaurus? If they aren't there by default where can I download them?  The install is all by script, so shouldn't have much to do w/ OPIE.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Can't Find Cardfs?

I'm new to OZ and OPIE, so maybe I'm missing something...

I followed the instructions for flashing OZ with OPIE and everything seems to work fine with that.  My only problem comes when I try to install the cardfs-$whatever.bin file.  I copy the file to both a CF card and an SD card, and OZ won't recognize either file at boot.

I tried this with both OZ 3.5.3 + OPIE 1.2.0 and OZ 3.5.4.1 + OPIE 1.2.1 with Hentges's appropriate cardfs files.

With OZ 3.5.4.1, I get a blue screen asking me if I want to search for cardfs and I type "ok".  In OZ 3.5.3, I don't get this screen and it also doesn't detect the cardfs files on either the SD card or the CF card.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?  An alternate method maybe of installing the software from the cardfs file?

I know that my Zaurus at least recognizes my CF card or otherwise I wouldn't have been able to flash it in the first place.

The cfs has to be on the CF card with the the zImage and the initrd.bin. The SD card has to be formatted ext2 and, from my experience, empty. During the installation, the Hentges ROM will recognize the card after it asks you if you want to find it. It will ask you the destination of the cfs, which would be your SD card. I have installed the Hentges cfs about six times without a hitch using 3.5.4.1. My collie did not respond to 3.5.3 very well.

I followed your instructions (which were very similar to the ones on the Hentges website) and still the same results...

Chris has been helping me out quite a bit setting mine up and the way he described worked for me. I'll give you a few steps I had to do to get mine working right except I never had any problems w/ it finding the cardfs file.

1) Loaded the zImage, initrd.bin, cardfs-opie-collie.bin, and hentges-opie-imagerootfs.tar.gz to my 64meg CF card.
2) Flashed using FAQ (SD Card was NOT inserted yet)
3) altboot came up, picked opt1 installed OS (I haven't messed with a loopfile yet)
4) i did not chose to look for cardfs image yet
5) got the wierd "card found" screen you can't get around, pulled CF card, rebooted and it went into OS fine. Reinserted card, got the msg but you can hit ok now.
6) SD card setup
  a) I had previously zeroed out my card as recommended by chris using the alt-boot faq, I couldn't format it though cause my zaurus had the root copied to SD, that is why I had to start over
 When i put the ard into the zaurus it would not mount, so I quickformatted to FAT using my windows machine
 inserted back into zaurus and formatted my SD card ext2 according to the alt-boot faq
7) copied the cardfs file over to the SD mount, rebooted
let bootup search for Cardfs and it found it ok, installed to SD card ext2 filesys

so far everything is working perfect for me, just need to get the opie-packagemanager working because apkg seems to be trying to download files from a non-existant directory inthe feed (there's no colli directory in 3.5.4.1 feed that hentges is based on)

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcda1 seems to work, returns dd: /dev/mmcda1: no space left on device after 10 mins (1gig sd)
mkfs.ext2 -m0 /dev/mmcda1  gets... /dev/mmcda1 is mounted: will not make a filesystem here!

I can't seem to unmount it, mount shows
/dev/mmcda1 on /media/card type vfat (rm,noatime,nodev)
/dev/mmcda1 on /home/root type vfat (rm,noatime,nodev)
umount /dev/mmcda1 gets /home/root: device is busy

Someone in IRC suggested using partition magic on a windows boot cd, or reflashing and saying no the to root filesystem on the SD.

I cannot answer to the wireless issues (I am still saving up for a wireless card), but I can answer to some your other problems. First, you should transfer data using a CF card, not your SD card. This is especially true if you have your OS on your SD card. I'm sure it screws something up when you remove it. Also, when you went back to the old way (the OS on flash), none of the package managers work. The apkg manager terminates with a nonsense error, and the opie-packagemanager does not provide the symlinks necessary. It will really screw things up. You have to do the ipkg/ipkg-link thing. After installing/reinstalling a few times (actually a few dozen times as I too have been looking for a stable setup), I had to zero-out my SD card and reinstall an ext2 (mkfs.ext2 -m0 /dev/mmcda1) filesystem because an increase of errors of various sorts. Once I did this and reinstalled a loop-file via a Hentges tarball and a Hentges cfs file, my collie has been one happy puppy. My only regret is that I made my loop-file too small as I already have it half full. Konqueror and the opie-packagemanager also started working with this arrangement.

I don't show any /dev/mmcda1/ in my filesystem. I do have /mnt/card/ though.  I was under the impression that the loopfile is formatted ext2, although my card is formatted vfat. How do you zero out the card?  There must be something you can do if you have to take the card out, any workarounds?

Also I can't seem to get my Zaurus to connect to the internet via USB. I'm running Windows XP and I can ping the desktop but can get no farther. I've tried this:

you may want to use NT/2000/XP routing to get ur zaurus to the web.
use these commands:

netsh routing ip nat install
netsh routing ip nat add interface “YOUR LAN INTERFACE NAME” full
netsh routing ip nat add interface Internal private

if I could get internet working through my usb it would make it easier to grab the packages I need when setting it up before I get my WLAN configured.

I've been looking around on openzaurus.org and and these forums and have a semi-functional PDA with wireless access, but I haven't been able to get it to work quite right yet.

I've flashed with zImage 48/16 and opie-image3.5.4
I was able to set up an altboot to my 1GB Sandisk SD card with a 300mb loopfile. The installation seemed to work ok until I went to install my Sandisk Connect 128/WLAN card. I used the guide listed Here.
Step one wouldn't work because through the USB sync I couldn't download with ipkg update. I decided to skip that step, powered down, plugged the SD card into my reader and transferred the ipk files over manually. I popped it back in and rebooted and altboot freaked out and couldn't mount the loopfile anymore. I gave up on that and decided to try and get the card working in normal boot (with no sd image). I was able to get up to the prism3 drivers but they kept complaining saying they needed hostap-util, so I found hostap-utils_0.4.7-r3_arm.ipk on a wiki page and installed it. After I did that the prism3 ipks loaded just fine.

Unfortunately after all this I only have 1meg free in /home/root/. When installing most applications, especially Konqureror (the whole reason I tried playing with this was to be able to browse web pages), I get the following message after the install downloads. "The package manager was terminated due to signal code signal SIGABRT"

I was able to istall a few packages, iceblox, opie-gutenbrowser, opie-kpackman (although packman got linking errors) to the SD card.  Also if the unit goes into sleep mode the only way to wake up the WLAN card is to unplug and plug back in. I can't stop the card w/ network control panel because stopping fails.

So I try and go back to redo my SD image. I delete the old .bin file in /boot-images and redo altboot for the SD card. Once the image is loaded up it shows 600meg used (somehow it's not reading that the old .bin is gone, although if I do an ls in /boot-images/ it only shows one file.

I go ahead and try to configure the WLAN card under the sd loopfile boot anyway just to see if it will work. I end up getting this error when I load the final prism3 drivers..

As long as I can get Konqueror and a nice telnet browser that supports ANSI i'll be happy. If anyone has some tips on the errors, or using a different rom file, please let me know.
