Personal Java/Jeode/J2ME Personal Profile / Savaje
« on: May 17, 2007, 09:27:40 am »
Sun now owns the SavaJe IP, they bought it after the company went bankrupt.

I've seen posts on the on the OpenMoko list to the effect that Sun is rapidly working on porting the SavaJe stuff to the OpenMoko device.

Perhaps Sun _is_ finally freeing java!

I'm more interested in seeing it run on Z!

General Discussion / How Long Can Sharp Ignore The Umpc Market?
« on: May 17, 2007, 09:01:43 am »
Sharp can do what Sharp wants to do. They may or may not be missing the boat in the UMPC arena, but the UMPC's are also very expensive.

I agree that someone will pickup where sharp left off, but I'm not holding my breath.

but i was really hoping that trisoft or streamline offered the service.

we will not offer to replace the microdrive with a CF card.
We tried it here with a SanDisk Ultra-II and the first card
lived less than one hour before it turned itself read-only...
Tried a second card and this was only running for 10 days.

Maybe we just got two bad cards in a row, but we were
also not impressed of the speed increase, so we don't see
the need to replace the harddisk with a flash memory.

But if your harddisk is faulty, there's no problem to replace
it with a new one.

Thanks Marc,

Maybe you've saved me some heart ache. I was actively searching for a 'deal' on a CF card. But you also made a valid point, I've never been unhappy w/ the the spin up time on my 3K. Guess I'll try a disk replacement.

i'm watching this one.

Frankly I'd have a Greenphone _now_ ecept that it took Trolltech USA (somewhere in cali) 3+ weeks to answer my pricing question.

Sounds like FIC is doing yet another embedded widigt kit for the phone. I hope it's pretty....

I still occasionally have disk errors w/ my C3000. Can the disk in my Z be replaced/upgraded w/ a new 6 GB drive or a CF card?

yeah, the price really isn't awful considering.  I realized shortly after my post how much I payed for my 3200 on preorder (neigh 800 USD IIRC).  Funny how your perception of "expensive" changes when you buy imported japanese tech goodies

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=151079\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I know what you mean. My C3000 was $705 from PriveJapan years ago.
I'm in the market for a new phone and was looking hard at the BlackJack.....

All I freaking want is a linux smart phone!! But I can't seem to find one.

GreenPhone is said to be unstable for dialy use. Even Trolltech makes the point that it's a dev tool, not a daily use phone.

So RIM, Nokia and Apple are my only 'non MS' options out there and _none_ run linux.

sigh.

reflashing doesn't fix the internal hard drive

Trisoft have instructions for restoring the disk contents
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=150024\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I had a same problem last month with my C3000.

[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22449&hl=]my post[/url]

I rebuilt the partition table per Trisofts instructions and reflashed to Cacko.
In my case I had to track down a non-sharp fdisk binary.

Sharp ROMs / New Feed For Sharprom And Compatible
« on: January 02, 2007, 09:28:05 pm »

A new feed for Sharprom and compatible distros (cacko, ...) is available here:

...snip...

enodr,
Thanks for the feed and the packages.

I've managed to rebuild Andy's (imasmith) cacko 1.23 beta from his original sources. I plan to update the kernel this week. My plan is to add squashfs and a few other patches to tetsu's latest kernel. Any words of warning? specific patches?

I'm fairly happy w/ the performance of Andy's beta, is there much to be gained from porting Cacko final 1.23 ROM to the C3000? I'm more than a little unclear on what's involved in porting Cacko 1.23 from the C3100 to the C3000. It should require some mount point and init script changes, but I tried this approach about a year ago and couldn't figure it out. Has anyone tried this particular approach?

http://cacko.biz redirects you to
http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/
and that is where the links are dead for the ROMS
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Just being clear here.

The download links from [a href=\"http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/]http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/[/url] really download from cacko.oesf.org.

I'm sure they'll be back up. Remember offroad just changed servers.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Phantom Partition On /dev/hda [fixed]

if you are using the fdisk from the D+B boot (ie, emergency boot) then the fdisk version that is included there is buggy and does that. You can try running a different version of fdisk from a cf or sd card.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=149195\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks Meanie.

Using a different fdisk did the trick, I was able to recreate my partitions. Upon my first try at re-flashing I still got the "Error HDD not found" then the disk was found upon retry.

I still suspect a disk problem.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Phantom Partition On /dev/hda [fixed]

Access the service menu and under the bkup rstr menu select hdd 00 clear.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=149010\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

No joy. I zeroed the Harddisk. I still have the phantom partition being created. I did print the table along the way. The 1 block partition is created when I create /dev/hda1.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Phantom Partition On /dev/hda [fixed]
« on: December 24, 2006, 01:39:33 pm »
First this is my fault. While flashing my updated version of Cacko 1.23 for the C3000. I lost my partition table.

No big thing right? Just boot into D+B mode recreate them and then reflash right?

Well. I can't seem to create a 'good' partition table.

I've tried as both /dev/hda and /dev/hdc (w/ a CF card inserted) and I get the same 'extra' partition. After creating hda2, when I start to create hda3 fdisk autoselects partition 4.

Here's what my partition table ends up looking like.

/dev/hda1   1-204        id 83 (linux)
/dev/hda2  205-1020   id 83 (linux)
/dev/hda3  1-1            no type
/dev/hda4  1021-7936   fat32

I've even tried building the partition table backwards (from hda3 to hda1). I that case I still get the 1 block no type partition. I don't understand enough of the advanced menu in fdisk to know if I can clean this up.

I just don't get it. I will say that a few times fdisk didn't even find my hard drive. I bought my 3K the first week after they were announced, so this unit is a full 3 years old.

Is this fixable?

Thanks,

Mark

Edit to mark as fixed.
