Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxrom On Sl5000
« on: August 27, 2006, 03:10:44 pm »
Continuing with my experiments with this thing-
I have made prgress.

Though I still have not been able to free up much room for the os, it was enough to get a number of things installed- some of which actually work.

But I have two big issues right now:

Display configuration.
The sl5000 (collie devices) have a tall, narrow display, unlike many of the newer clamshell devices; Seem that the default video config expects my screen to bewider than it is. Half of most application windows are off-screen and the creen doesn't scroll.

Keyboard.
The only keyboard software I can get to work takes up the whole screen and doesn't send key signals to the active application.

Just as a note- I have pdaxrom working mostly on an sl5000.
Using a 1gb cf card and 256mb sd card.

The basic install works fine but is, of course, somewhat lacking.

I have had a lot of trouble with all the ROMS I have tried in SOME fashion, and the biggest of the bunch is the inability to get software installed from the internet.

I have finally gotten this working with pdaXrom by grabbing the copy of the feed and hosting it myself on my pc.
Disk space now becomes a problem, of course, as the sl5000 has very little onboard to start with.
I have followed the suggestion of moving some base directories to a card, but the problem I hit with this is getting enough space while NOT wrecking something..
If I reboot, my install is hosed.

So my question now is what can I move safely and does anyone have suggestions besides what is in the thread on sl5500

Thanks.

Just as a note- I have pdaxrom working mostly on an sl5000.
Using a 1gb cf card and 256mb sd card.

Most things work so far, and its nice to have much more control of the OS than in the other roms I have tried....

But even though I can get networking set up and functioning just fine, including running through a gateway to route packets, I can NOT get packages to install and run.

NO package feed is working for me, even when I have checked the EXACT url on another machine. It connects but then just times out after about 30 seconds.
One of my guesses on this point is the port used is still blocked- anyone know the EXACT port in use by ipkg?

One of the things I tried is to install locally, and this works in PART-
applications say they install, and I get icons.
But they don't work. Not sure why, but my leading guess is space.....

Another guess I am working on is space- trying moving stuff from the onboard to one of my cards.
So far I have screwed up twice by moving stuff...wrong, in some fashion.

So I am still working on it.

Intro: I was recently given an sl5000 and it works just fine; I have done a few things already at this point:
picked up a cheap 1gb cf card
Flashed to a choice of systems:
OZ 3.5.3 (console, gpe and opie)
OZ 3.5.4 (console, gpe and opie)
Cacko ROM
Original Sharp ROM

All work...but with varying issues, unfortunately.

Some don't sync with Qtopia (I can sync with 1.7 or 2.2, roms have 1.5 or 1.7.)
Some won't work with my Gentoo pc which is configured as a gateway for the unit, although I can ping back and forth, etc.

NONE will connect to any package server/feeds.

The ones that work BEST will sync with Qtopia, can ping internet addresses successfully but STILL simply refuse to update packages.

This would not be a huge issue to me IF I could find a package repository in a single download that I could configure and use to update/install packages...
But I can not find such a thing.

I have downloaded various packages, one at a time, but each has numerous dependencies that fail, and each of THEM has dependencies....

I am very new to this, of course, so just learning the ropes and struggling though.
I have searched long and hard for answers myself, all to no avail.

Any suggestions?

I am screwing with one of these right now myself.
I contacted Sharp as I had the same problem and they sent me to sdgsystems.

I was emailed back in just hours- great support, esepcially for old, discontinued stuff THAT THEY DIDN"T MAKE!

Upshot is, they gave me a link.

I have flashed with that just fine, and all worked well.
