I like this one to learn the command line (text mode):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...576726?v=glance

You can get it for super cheap used.  If I recall correctly they have a section on the vi editor.  Not knowing vi was my biggest problem getting started with linix, because if you can't edit files in text mode your dead in the water when you need to troubleshooting or do anything without the gui running.

I don't see any reason to look for book that focus on gui tools, since they are so different from distro to distro and even version to version.  ... and if you can figure out gui tools on your own, you shouldn't own a computer (or even drive a car).

5x00 Hardware / Accessories For Screw Hole On The Back?

I don't know for sure, but the Enfora Pocket Spider may have used it:

Other than that I have not seen anything.  I would love to know the thread is for the socket... even though the back of my Z is now covered in velcro anyway

5x00 Hardware / Can this battery be made to work with the 5500?

If they need at least 7V could I take 2 of them and conect tthem parallel to each other on 12V Lead cell and get those 5V/2A.
Using the LM7805 with a 12 volt power source will get you a 5 volt output (and I think it will pass 2a if you use them in parrallel), but it really isn't a great solution because...

- You will burn off about 60% of the the battery power into a heat sink (very wastful).
- You will need a large heat sink to handle the 7 volts you are burning off.
- The heat sink gets hotter than you may realize.

It's a good expermiment anyway and doesn't cost that much to try, so you should try it for yourself if you can find the 2 LM7805 or 1 LM780S5.

If you can't find these and still want to use 12 volts, hooking the battery up to a car cord like the one linked below may be an easy (and better) solution.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...5736075602&rd=1

My only concern is that car batteries normally run at approx 14 volts when the car is running, so I don't know what this adapter would put out with the clean 12v you will get from the lead batteries.  I doubt this will be a problem though because these run fine with the car not running, which I think normally puts out under 13 volts.

The cleanest soultion I came up with for myself that was not too expensive and was fun to make was this:

http://www.tekprosystems.com/zaurus/batterypack.htm

It's really just a variation on the 4 AA packs; just easier to charge and about 2 times the run time.

does a search for installable files lockup/run really slow?
No worse than it would with a similar size CF card. Read speeds for the 4GB microdrives aren't any worse than they are for CF cards (at least in the Zaurus), so it simply boils down to how many files you keep on there.
Actually, don't all microdrives pull significantly more power than flash cards?

That really sucks guys.  If it makes you feel any better; I would have jumped on the deal to if I had known about it earlier.

Here is my setup with a T616:

It may not be the same using 3.13, but some of the info may be useful to you.

I did the following keyboard light mod on my sl-5500

You may be able to do something similar to a clam shell as well.

5x00 Hardware / take a 5500 apart ??
« on: September 01, 2004, 09:46:29 pm »
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

If you do get a bricked Z, you may want to get one with a working LCD.  Take a closer look when you open the unit.  Relpacing the screen with the light already attached might be much easier than just replacing the light.

I think what you are missing is that you need to remove the keyboard cover first.  This walks you through the whole process:

http://www.tekprosystems.com/zaurus/internals.htm

I would suggest that you pick up some "thin" gutar picks to help to snap apart the case (step 12), just don't force anything.  The picks helped me a lot.

I have had mine apart a few times, what are you trying to do?

Fits Z, IR keboard (or 2 -  4000 Mah battery packs), head phones, WiFi card, 10/100 card, bluetooth card, and CF Card.
