Software / qemu CPU emulator
« on: July 26, 2004, 12:32:58 am »
I was talking about testing console apps, maybe SDL.
I doubt QT would work, but testing basic X apps should work, not that anyone would write apps now days that don't use a higher level widget set.
Just writing and testing, then a proper recompile for the Zaurus.

Example: Compiling up Apache 2.0.50 with php5 support, don't know if this can be done at the moment.  This would be considered a console app and could be tested inside this emulator

General Discussion / Printing from the Zaurus
« on: July 23, 2004, 03:06:23 am »
Port 9100 is a common port to talk to printers. A HP print driver should be able to be configured to send stuff down that port and print maybe PCL type data streams as well as normal text. CUPS should be able to help here.

I came across this
QEMU is a slashdot post and I was wondering if anyone here uses this to make Zaurus binaries

General Discussion / The Sharp Dev board is not really back

Have you ever seen gorgeous modification in Sharp Qtopia 1.5.4? No! Should we wait for them to transform Qtopia or to release the 1.5.4 source code? No!
Didn't the user lpotter say there will be a new Qtopia release in November or December?
They may fit in well with the C960 rumour to.

General Discussion / Don\'t waste your money
« on: June 09, 2004, 06:40:17 am »
I got my muvo2 for $449 Australia dollars. Did the extraction, put in a 128M CF card and did the firmware update so that the muvo2 still works as a MP3 player.

But, the 4Gb CF drive has made my Zaurus unreliable. It doesn\'t like me taking it out.  Hard crashes, or keyboard stops working. Won\'t reboot. If I take the battery out to reboot then it only starts working if I put a real CF card in the slot. Sometimes it needs two power cycles to get back to normal. This is with the normal Sharp ROM.
ChrisEBoy, can you please post your
/etc/fstab
/etc/sdcontrol
and anything else you may thing relavant. My Zaurus will thank you for it.

General Discussion / Who are you and where are you from?

G\'day. I\'m Gordon and I live in Sydney, Australia.
I\'m currently a Support Analyst for a large statement/bill printing company. I deal in Unix scripting and making internal webpages to assist in my support work (basically to keep the account managers off my back). I know C and have been using Perl for about 8 years.

General Discussion / kernel 2.6.X
« on: April 28, 2004, 05:56:25 am »
Mickey,
I\'ll try to help if I can. Where do I FTP the source from or do I grap John\'s  patch-2.6.5-jl2.diff.gz
What do I need to setup?
gcc version and ipkg would be nice? native compile or cross-compile? I do have an slightly unstable 4Gb microdrive to use.
Other libs?
I suppose YAMADA-san\'s patches will need to be forward ported too.
Umm, I had some other questions but they have disapeared now.

General Discussion / kernel 2.6.X
« on: April 27, 2004, 02:27:06 pm »
Hi, it\'s after 4am here so I maybe be typing complete crap here, but, is there a project trying to make the binary SD card driver work with the 2.6 Linux kernels?

I\'m not sure that it is possible to intercept it\'s function calls into the kernel to accomadate the API changes from the 2.4.18 kernel till 2.6.X ones, but if it is  I was wondering if anyone was working on it.

I think the Zaurus would run a lot better with a more modern kernel.

Off to sleep now. Must not buy things at this time of night. Must not ask silly questions at this time of night. Must not...

Deals and Great Z Buys / 4gig CF microdrive for $199 US!!
« on: March 30, 2004, 04:36:15 am »
Ok, I parted with the $450 AUD and got the MuVo.  I have taken the microdrive out and put it in my C860. It didn\'t like it. Lock up. Had to pull the battery out to power off.  Struggled to pull the microdrive out. Formatted it in card reader connected to a Win2K PC as FAT32. Took quite a while.  Put it back in the Zaurus and turned it on. Card looked like it was mounted but probably not. Ran the normal terminal program and keyboard wouldn\'t work. Handwriting recognision worked though and a dmesg | more showed lots of error (forgot what now).  Tried to select eject for the card, but my Zaurus seemed to freeze. Gave it a few minutes and decided that it had crashed hard.  Had to pull the battery out again. After a few more crashes, I finallly got a working system. I copied a 10Meg MP3 from my SD card to the microdrive and it looked like it copied ok. I played the MP3 from the microdrive and it played ok. So it works. It doesn\'t like to be ejected though. A few crashes and battery in-outs. Also you need to put some sticky tape on the top and bottom  so you have something to hold onto when you want to pull the drive out.
Ok, a test. When my machine is stable with a 128M CF card, eject, pull out the card. Put in the microdrive and the icon appears. But it is not mounted. dmesg reports lots of read_intr errors (error=0x10 status=0x59). So I manually mount.
mount -t vfat /dev/hda /mnt/cf
And it mounts ok. The 10M MP3 is still there
let it rest a few minutes.  Manual
umount  /mnt/cf
works. Earlier I tried the icon and crash, battery cycle again
Now, pulling the microdrive out then causes the keyboard to stop working again. Handwriting works though. Won\'t suspend, hard crash again.
BTW the MuVo didn\'t like my Amicroe 256M CF, but did like my 256M Lexar CF.

This is great news!
I saw a MuVo today for $450 AUD while a 4Gb microdrive would set me back $800 AUD.
Has anybody tried the 1.5Gb model?

It has information on SDIO registers.
