Angstrom & OpenZaurus / /home/root On Sd

That should work, as long as the card is formatted ext2 instead of fat.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Cannot Create Simbolic Link Or Usb Network

Hi,

I am having a few teehing problems with OZ at the moment.

When ever i try to install local .ipk file (from the OZ feed) I get the message simbolic linking failed.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=88222\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Are you trying to install to SD? If so, is it formatted ext2? If not, symlinking will always fail since fat16 cannot handle symlinks.

I have found that trying to download to the SD card directly is really slow.  Better to download to the ram, then copy the files manually.  Have you checked the feed for a better file manager?  I always use the command line for such things so I'm not sure about the default file manager. Check the feed though, there has to be a file manager that suits your needs in there somewhere..

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / I Want To Help... How?
« on: June 29, 2005, 10:03:08 pm »
I imagine the developers would love the help, since they seem like they are a bit over-worked maintaining this, the greatest OS for Zaurii ever. Check out this page

http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/developers/

Or post a note to the mailing list and let them know you want to help out.

http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/openzaurus-users

There are a few developers here too so they may be able to answer your question better than I, a lowly Debian zealot.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Hard Choices
« on: June 29, 2005, 09:53:58 pm »
I don't know about migrating from Palm, because it has been over 6 years since I had a Palm, but here is why I chose Openzaurus.

I started using Debian Linux, which has a really cool way of installing packages.  It uses massive on-line repositories full of virtually every piece of software know to man.  It's called Apt (well actually it's Apt + dpkg).

I bought a 5500, and was moderatly impressed with the Sharp Rom, but it felt really limited and slow.  Then I stumbled upon OZ.  It's literally Debian for the Zaurus.  It uses the same style package management, which rules, and is waaay better looking than the Sharp rom.  Yeah it takes a little work to set up, but the Hentges Rom fixes that by installing the most used apps by default.  It is truely magic, and once installed, you will not regret it.

See http://oz.hentges.net for more info on the Hentges version of OZ and it's really cool card file system

The Sharp Rom and its derivatives use old libraries and are pretty much a dead end in my opinion.  Hope that helps..

cause it will ask you whether to scan it, and you can't see the whole window.
only way out is a reset :-(

That is exactly why I never have an SD card in while first-booting after a flash.  Let it get through its first boot, then insert the SD and all is well.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Victory At Last-praise Be To The Hentges Rom!

Yeah, the Hentges version sure takes the bite out of gettting the core apps of OZ working, without the three weeks of cross-eyed thumbing of the device.  CoreDump saved me so much time with the CardFS.  Almost all of the apps I want are included.

As our illustrious admin has pointed out, this arguement is not only pointless, but counterproductive to all of our cause.  Both OZ and PdaXrom offer the abandoned Zaurus users CHOICE, which is why we are all here.

Thread closed, let's get back to real business.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / New Hentges Rom With Oz 3.5.3 / Opie 1.2.0
« on: May 23, 2005, 04:08:36 pm »
Strange, I used the non-debug kernel from the directory (donotuse) on your server and it seems to be working.  The first time I tried I had used a kernel from the OZ site and it most certainly didn't work.  Are you saying the non-debug kernels on your site are not working now? If so, is it worth reflashing (I haven't set much up since I flashed) or should I run with what I have now?

If I reflash I will move the /home/root.  Is it as simple as what I already did? Simply moving and symlinking?

It was the wrong kernel after all.  Also, I figured if I am flashing anyway I might as well use the release candidate.  Very cool CoreDump.  I had a hard time thinking up other packages I wanted, as you had included all the core apps I need on my Z.  Nice work.

I must say your mirror is MUCH faster than the main feed. I wonder is that a bandwidth difference or is it just that most people never change their sources list?

I also moved the opie-PIM files (addressbook.xml and datebook.xml) to a folder on my SD card and symlinked them to their original locations.  I found that with OZ I could only use the pim apps for so long before running out of space. That solved that.  Now if I could figure out why Kontact can sync the addressbook but hangs trying to sync the calendar then my Zaurus would be the perfect PDA/PMT.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Which One? Opie Or Oz
« on: May 22, 2005, 01:16:29 pm »
If you are good at following instructions, and you have a decent sized SD card (128+) I suggest trying the Hentges images of openzaurus with cardfs.  It's a good shortcut to a fully working system with minimal effort.  The cardfs script will install a lot of apps you will want at the time of flashing.  The latest release candidate includes konqueror, a few cool games, and things like opie-ftp.  It is the same Openzaurus release as you will find in the OZ feed, but the cardfs script gives you a running start when installing applications.

See http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/oz3.5.3-opie1.2.0.shtml and read the cardfs instructions before flashing your Z.

The compatability libraries are found in the feed.  The package name is Sharp-compat-libs.  When you install the package you will get a purple and green icon on your settings tab. Click it, wait a few seconds, then choose list, select the applications tab from the list, then choose Opera, and click OK.  Now Opera will use the compat libraries instead of the Open Zaurus libraries.

I have found the ONLY way to guarantee the initrd.bin and zImage files don't get corrupted when you copy them to the CF card is to do it on a Linux box. Windows just can't handle these files correctly for some reason.

I agree with Mickey on this one.  Solve the boot problem (answered here before) before trying to fix the networking or asking people to troubleshoot the wifi card.  The kernel mismatch is a much bigger issue in your case. Just my 2c

Are you running a firewall? Type iptables -L and see if you are locked down on that interface.  You can also type iptables -A INPUT -i usb0 -j ACCEPT to insure the firewall isn't blocking the return of the icmp probe.

EDIT: I may have used the wrong kernel (I think I did). I will reflash and see if it still does this.

Doh! One problem, and I mean exactly 1.  I eject my CF card and insert my Netgear MA 701 card and it doesn't show that I have inserted anything.  I then put my CF card back in, and it again doesn't show anything.  Is the driver for the netgear card included in this image?

I can't wait for the next version.  This is a really cool way to install OZ. Konqueror has been troublesome for me on past and present OZ installs. Any timeline?

krautsjo, are you running windows or Linux? If you are using Linux, check out the 3.4 version of Kontact. It syncs perfectly with the Opie-pim suite.
