General Discussion / OK, so I have "too many Zaurii"

???  I don\'t remember ever having that trouble with my 5500.

What do you consider trouble?

Sure, I can get wifi working with my Z.  It\'s just a lot more effort than it should be.   Especially when you need to have different settings, like WEP keys, for wifi networks, you need to manually configure everything.   Even with open AP\'s, I sometimes have trouble because the Z will attach to a different network than I want it to when there are multiple to choose from.

On my PowerBook, after I enter my WEP settings, they are remembered.  Next time I encounter that AP, it will automatically attach with the WEP key I entered before.  XP does similar things.

I recently found a Linux tool that sounds like it would work:  http://www.stud.uni-hamburg.de/users/lenna...jects/waproamd/
But, I have not tried it yet.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Multiple WiFi profiles in OZ 3.3.5
« on: April 08, 2004, 12:38:32 am »
I have been looking around for a decent solution to this problem..   Not only to have multiple profiles to manage things like WEP keys, but to allow for decent roaming, where my Z will attach to (or at least show the presence of) new wifi networks.

I found this tool: http://www.stud.uni-hamburg.de/users/lenna...jects/waproamd/

It seems to do just what I want.   I don\'t currently have a cross-compile environment set up, to build a zaurus version.  But, it looks promising.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / HowTo make WEP work on OZ 3.3.5
« on: April 06, 2004, 03:50:01 pm »
I prefer using the command line iwconfig (actually shell scripts using iwconfig) to set the WEP key, rather than in wireless.opts.   My Z is always moving, so the network config is often changing.  If I move from home to work, I need to set a new WEP key.  If I\'m on the road, I turn WEP off completely.    The shell scripts can automate this process a bit (but it still sucks).

I hope the wifi support is improved in the SL-6000, which comes with integrated wifi.   With my Powerbook, when I connect to a new network, it remembers the settings and WEP key, and when it sees that SSID (and MAC address?) in the future, it can automatically connect with no user interaction needed.

What version of the SL-6000 do you have? (WiFi support?  Bluetooth support?)

If you have the WiFi version, can you give some info on the software for finding, configuring, and connecting to WiFi AP\'s?
I find the software available for the SL-5500 to be less than great..  For example, it does not remember WEP keys.  So, I have to run shell scripts to set keys when moving between home & work.

General Discussion / sl-6000 v sl-c860 Witch Would You Buy.

I like the form factor of the 860.. with the clamshell for input, or folded over for bigscreen PDA style.  But, built-in BlueTooth and WiFi in the 6000 is really nice.    I currently use a CF Wifi card in my 5500 as an access point detector.  When I\'m travelling, I whip out my Z to see if there are open AP\'s, rather than pulling out the laptop.   -- If the Wifi software on the Z was better, this would be a great feature.  As it is now, it\'s a bit spotty.  I\'m hoping the WiFi software for the 6000 improves this.

The Bluetooth feature is nice too.  I have a 15\" PowerBook G4, and bluetooth is a very convenient feature.  No cables to lug around.  I use it for a keyboard and mouse input,  and I bought a Palm Tungsten T to use with it.  Sync\'s great with iSync.   My current phone is not bluetooth capable, but when my commitment ends, I\'m switching to one that does.  BT sync to both my PowerBook and PDA will be great, not to mention Internet access via BT in areas without WiFi.
