General Discussion / Pretec CompactGPRS
« on: April 30, 2004, 11:31:18 pm »
Newest update...
The Pretec card appears to only support CSD (Circuit Switched Data) protocol GPRS sessions.  My local carrier only supports the newer WAP (whatever that is... Wireless Application Packets maybe?) protocol.
So, unless one of you helpful souls knows otherwise, and is willing to share, there\'s no way for me to get the Pretec card to work. *sigh*
Hopefully the company I bought it from will understand, and still accept the return.  Now where did I put that receipt...?

I\'m here because it\'s much more comprehensive than the Sharp site, and Linux was built by enthusiasts, not corporations.  That Sharp blew out their community group only shows that they are a corporation.  The users here have provided me with more, better, and faster answers than I have ever gotten from /any/ manufacturer.  Hopefully I\'ll be able to repay the community at some point.

Software / Z5600 Terminal

So I get this really spiff new Z for Christmas...
I\'m all excited about writing scripts, etc...

And there doesn\'t appear to be a shell terminal for it!

Anyone know where I can download an ipkg for it?

Running the original Sharp ROM.

I\'ve had a similar problem on my desktop.  Turned out that the passwd command can handle some crazy number of characters (256ish perhaps?) , but the login screen variable was truncated at 8.  When at a terminal, you can whack away and create a properly secure passsword (define as you wish, but more than 8 chars anyway), but when you actually try to use it, it is never correct as nothing after the 8th character is ever compared to the shadow value.  I changed desktops to one that had a larger buffer, but perhaps you could try a shorter password?

And while we\'re on it...  the \":x:\" in
joe:x:1000:1000:root:/home/joe:/bin/bash
is a placeholder that replaces a hash of the password.  Even way back whenever it was, they knew better than to expose plaintext passwords. :)

Linux Issues / File Transfers RH9 <-> Z5600

Hooray!  That got it!  Of course the answer to setting up the USB connection was in the non-USB How-To!!  I\'ll look up the negative first from now on
Now to get it working as someone other than root...  /Then/ I\'ll get to the part about ssh.

Thank you all very much.

Thank you for the suggestion.  rcp, mozilla, telnet, lynx...  all give the same (or real close to it) error.
    [me@home me]$ rcp testdoc.txt 192.168.129.201:Text_Files/testdoc.txt
    192.168.129.201: Connection refused

    [me@home me]$ rcp testdoc.txt root@192.168.129.201:Text_Files/testdoc.txt
    192.168.129.201: Connection refused

    [me@home me]$ rcp testdoc.txt root.192.168.129.201:Text_Files/testdoc.txt
    root.192.168.129.201: Unknown host

I\'m hoping it\'s a common newby syntax error...  any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to the wizards that put together this site!

I\'m using a Z5600 and am trying to connect via the USB dock to my RH 9.0 desktop.  I can ping it with no problem (Thanks Harold & Jim, the How-To is great!).  No security is active on the Z.  I know (now that I\'ve read a bunch   )  that synchronization isn\'t going to happen (yet).

How can I connect to my Z?  I\'d like to be able to send/rcv files, programs, etc.  So far all I\'ve managed is to IR my address book, etc from my dying HandSpring Visor, and ping from my desktop.

Please don\'t make me go to work and tell all the Winblow$ folks that there\'s no way to make two Linux systems talk to each other!

Bill
