Cxx0 General discussions / C700 Is Unstable And Slow

I have a c700 and a c860.  Both cacko and pdaxrom are surprisingly usable on the c700 as long as you have a swap file activated (cacko has a memory manager tab).  The extra memory in the later Zs makes a huge diff but the c700 can be stable and not slow.  Once swap is activated you'd still hit annoying bugs like not being able to put the Z to sleep with the kdepim on.  But still quite usable.  Cacko and PDAXROM has some kernal feature having to do with preemptive multitasking that brings the speed up to the other Zs.  There is a full and lite Cacko but even the full one rocks the c700.  Good luck

Spaul,

how much swap do you use with cacko?

nice to hear someone's got a 700 that is working!

thanks

Cxx0 General discussions / C700, Cacko 1.23, Won't Wake From Suspend
« on: February 17, 2007, 08:27:42 pm »
Hi,

i've just installed cacko 1.23 on my c700 and love the out-of-the-box functionality, *but* when the z suspends, it won't wake up.  i have to pull the battery and reboot.

from the cacko faq i read that you can plug in the power cord, then press on/off, but that only works sometimes and doesn't work at all when on the train.

anybody have a fix or suggestion?

thanks.

I own a C700 with a 2gig SD card in it, and a Symbol wireless CF card that is pretty often in it.

I use OZ/Opie, and I usually always have the latest release candidate available.

No matter what, my C700 is always very slow and very unstable.
I cannot browse the web at all using the web browser, it is way too slow and eventually crashes.
I tried putting the SD in and creating a swap file, but it does not seem to help much.

The package manager also seems to hang all the time, especially when I try to install packages (to SD or not, does not seem to make a difference).

Is this common with the c700, because of a lack of ram maybe?
Or is it plausible that my unit is defective? If so, is there some application I can use to try and test the memory in the unit or something?

What should I try? I would love to use my Zaurus for work but right now I spend much more time rebooting it, then fscking the SD card because the Z crashed without unmounting it cleanly than using it..

Hi,

i've got a c700 also.  i've had it for about a month and am still looking for the right rom.  i seem to find myself standing on the train pulling the battery out to reboot alot also.  i'm using cacko now and have a problem waking from suspend.  other than that, it's great, but that issue is a biggie.

oz/opie seemed to perform well with no big probs, but doesn't have all of the installed goodies that cacko does...

if my struggles continue much further, i'm going to get a >=760 model.

sorry i have no definitive answers.  please let us know if you solve your issues.

good luck,

Cxx0 Hardware / Best Rom For The 700?

I'd go for a Cxx00 model[...]

ahhh... I'd love to.  I was playing around with the C1000 today at Yodobashi (elec. store) and it is nice.  But alas, my budget is in the used 7/8xx range.

With the 750 can you listen to an mp3 and edit a text file at the same time?  Can't do it on the 700.

thanks for the reply.

hmm....  i'm thinking an "upgrade" to a >=750 is in order.

I've been playing with Cacko and it's doing fine on the 700.  Still lusting for Kathryn...

Cxx0 Hardware / Best Rom For The 700?
« on: February 16, 2007, 08:54:51 am »
Hi,

What is the "best" rom for a c700?

I know this is subjective, but I'd like to hear what other experienced users have to say.

Here's my 2 cents after three weeks using the c700:

1. Oz/Opie or Cacko: both fairly fast and stable on the 700.
2. pdaxrom beta 1: I love Kathryn, but she's slow on the 700.

Is the 760 that much snappier than the 700?

thanks for any input.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / C700, Opie, "no Space Left" Error Mplayer Install
« on: February 14, 2007, 12:22:26 am »
Hi,

Just installed OZ/Opie and love it.

I'm using a c700.  I am not connected to the internet so am installing packages via the sd card.

While trying to install mplayer (and all of its dependancies) i get a "no space left" error.

What can I throw away and where exactly is it located?  I've used the file manager and the command line to find files, but am not sure what is ok to trash.

I'd like to dump the games (paratrooper and mindbreaker), or any other unecessary large files, but can't find them... (yes, i'm a noob.)

any help greatly appreciated.

ps.  i love the speed and responsiveness of oz/opie on the 700.  i've tried the other distros, but oz/opie is the fastest for me so far.  great work.

R121 uses a different install method. If you have little experience, try Beta 3, which installs normally. If you want to get your hands dirtier, you can follow the r121 install instructions on the pdaXrom home (the page that loads when you enter www.pdaxrom.org s a URL) page (just replace the Cxx00 files with the Cxx0 files). Note that you have to install a new bootloader to use r121.

Hope there's enough info here.

Will pdaxrom run ok on a c700?  or will it be a bit slow?

Is beta 3 the best bet for a c700?

thanks,

Cxx0 General discussions / Mplayer Audio Sync
« on: January 25, 2007, 08:26:57 am »
Rodre,

I've got video playing on my c700 with audio and vid in sync.  Thanks to Serge for his last post about the cpu not being fast enough.  My previous attempt involved finding the perfect codec, but what I really needed to do was crunch the vid down a little more.

Once I cut the fps down to 15 things got better sync-wise.  It's still faily viewable.  The -b parameter is bitrate, so first try that at 300 or 400 and see if it will work, then work your way down.

Here's what working for my c700:
Code: [Select]
ffmpeg -i infile.avi -b 200 -s 320x240 -r 15 -vcodec mpeg4 out.avi

add this:
Code: [Select]
-ss 00:00:00 -t 00:00:30to encode the first 30 seconds only as a test.

questions:
is mono audio less cpu intensive?
is two-pass encoding more cpu intensive?

I think I can eek out a bit more quality without pushing the cpu with some two-pass encoding.  That's next.

regards,

bubox

I Encoded it using these instructions:

https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Mencoder_Encoding

Specifically:

mencoder dvd://1 -srate 24000 -vop scale=320:240 -o office_space.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=15:mode=3 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vbitrate=150 -ofps 15 -sws 2

and it does the same thing.

I still have to try and re-encode using CBR. I guess I'll see what happens then.

Thanks for your advice, it still really helped me.

Rodre,

any luck?  I've got the exact same issue: audio faster than video (out of sync) issues with my c700.

I've been trying a bunch of different encoding options in ffmpeg and mencoder and haven't quite go t it yet.  please let me know if you find the magical encoder combination.

I'll post if I stumble on the answer.

Cxx0 General discussions / C700 Speed Issues [resolved]
« on: January 20, 2007, 10:12:07 pm »
Well, I did a nand restore to the original sharp rom and things are back to a more usable speed.  Hooray.

I really liked the Cacko rom, so I may try again after I learn a bit more.  I think my slowdowns with Cacko may be something I installed that gummed things up.  Who knows?

This might not be what you want to hear, but not running X speeds things a bunch.
There's plenty of great command line apps and have multiple tty's setup so I don't always use the window manager and thus enjoy greater speed.

Antikx,

you mean X as in Xwindow, as in pdaxrom?

« on: January 20, 2007, 07:55:10 am »
thanks for the input Koen.

i know the 700 is the slowest of the bunch, but i just need it to do music, vids (highly compressed) and maybe some web surfing.

the other day i checked out a c1000 at a big electronics store and i was surprised that it launched apps slow also.  not as slow, but it made me feel a bit better.

any other thoughts on speeding up the z?

thanks,

anyone have any speedup tips for the 700?

which rom, original, cacko, other, seems to be the most responsive?

Sharp ROMs / How To Flash The Japanese Kernel?
« on: January 02, 2007, 08:55:56 am »

It should be the same way that you flashed cacko. Put the three files in the root directory of your SD or CF, reboot holding 'On' and then follow the menu.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=149835\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

thanks Ling.  wasn't quite sure how to proceed.

i did steps 2 - 10 again, then the last step (install new rom) and it worked.  i've got the japanese input switches back.
