Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Arm Architecture
« on: January 27, 2010, 01:26:54 am »
I couldn't get MAME to compile on the Netwalker

I have a feeling it wouldn't be very fast, however. Stella (Atari 2600) and some NES emulator don't run all that well. Turning off the sound increases speed.

I also couldn't get GoogleEarth to work (even after following an online guide.) Anyone else gotten it up and running? Without 3D it would be a bear, but I'd still like to try.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Sharp Netwalker Pc-z1, Who Has One?
« on: January 12, 2010, 06:36:13 pm »
I picked up a Netwalker last year in November, here in Japan. I actually didn't know anything about it until I happened upon it in a local electronics store. I had been a Zaurus user in the past, but the C860 never really did it for me. I hit up the store the next day and bought it.

I really like it, and have found it much better than the Zaurus series. For some reason the store clerk was pretty adamant in stating that the Netwalker was NOT the next Zaurus.

I agree about the keyboard; it's not that easy to type on it. Also my battery life is not that great, but that's usually when using a wireless USB broadband modem. Also it's pretty cold over here, and the battery seems to hate it as much as I do

I'd be interested in opening it, just to be able to replace the battery. I don't like how it's non-user-replaceable

Deals and Great Z Buys / C860 -> C3100 Or C1000?

Thanks for the quick replies

I thought the 1000 would be better since it's newer(-ish) but I guess the 3100 makes more sense. The one in the store has a missing USB cable (should be easy to get a new one) and CF card slot dummy card. Other than that it looks to be in fine shape.

Deals and Great Z Buys / C860 -> C3100 Or C1000?

So I've got a C860 right now. It's cool enough, but yesterday in a store downtown I found a few used Zauri (Zaurii?)

There's a used C3100 (4gig micro drive) for ¥26300 (about $215) and a C1000 for ¥25000 (about $200.) Here in Japan that's pretty cheap for a Zaurus (even used) as in stores they are regularly much more, and go for $300 or more on auctions. The C3300(?) new in stores is still $600 ...

My question is, is it worth getting either one of them? Are they an improvement over the C860 in terms of software, updated OS, etc? I've had trouble getting software to install/run properly on my C860, would either of these newer Zauri solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply!

The things I'm most concerned about are: being able to use Japanese, being able to use WiFi & Bluetooth, speed and being able to reset it all if (more like when) I screw the whole thing up.

It's a toss-up between Cacko & pdaXrom. Can I dual boot?

I'm thinking of changing the ROM on my c860. The two most interesting right now are pdaXrom and Cacko. I have a few questions about the install, etc.

1. How easy is it to install and how long does it take? (I've done a quick once-over of the documentation.)

2. I'd like to be able to use my WiFi card (http://www.ambicom.com/products/wave2net/wl1100c-cf.html) without any config if possible. Which distro makes that possible (or easiest)?

3. I'd like to keep Japanese input and display abilities. Is Cacko better for that?

4. How do I go about syncing with my PC after I've changed my distro? Does "Zaurus Drive" still work?

5. If I b0rk everything up, how easy is it to reset the whole thing back to factory condition?

I know I should RTF threads, FAQs & documentation, but I'm really busy during the days and don't have a lot of time   Any help here is greatly appreciated!

Cxx0 General discussions / C-860 & Ambicom Wifi Card
« on: June 04, 2007, 09:06:02 pm »
A few months back I picked up an Ambicom WiFi card for my Zaurus. It works great - just plug it in and connect. I'm pretty sure it's this guy: http://www.ambicom.com/products/wave2net/wl1100c-cf.html

The problem is that it kills my battery - I can get about an hour of surf time before my battery goes yellow then I get the "connect to AC power" message. I'm on a pretty new battery too; I just got it this February and have only charged it about 5 times.

I can use AC power but I don't want to kill the battery prematurely. Is there some way to throttle the power consumption?

Thanks for any advice!

General Discussion / Zaurus Out Of Production?

pdahero, just out of curiousity, what do you use your Newt for nowadays??

Mostly as a mobile journal, actually. The Newton makes a wonderful mobile writing platform, especially with its size and full-sized stylus (pen?) Also with its slightly textured screen (compared to the Original Message Pad) and my custom stylus pen from Cross, it's just about perfect.

It even hooks up to my Personal Stylewriter so I can print directly if need be.

"Even the day that Sharp completely pulls the plug on the Zaurus line it will not die unless this community and others like it will let it die.

I still use my Newton, and that had the rug pulled out from under it in 1998. It's still going with a pretty good-sized user base.

Long live the Zaurus

Thanks, that looks really cool. I'll look into it.

Honestly though, I wanted to avoid flashing the ROM since I'd like to keep the Japanese interface, along with the dictionary and translator. Are those still available afterwards?

I've just downloaded and tried this program. It's great, and it looks like it'll come in handy in the future.

Cxx0 General discussions / C860 Questions
« on: December 31, 2006, 06:13:59 am »
I've got some questions about my 860.

I'm currently a Mac user, but I was a Linux user back in the day (before graphical installs  ) Going back to Linux after so many years has been fun, but difficult.

I have a stock C860:
MetroWerks OpenPDA version 1.0

Qtopia version 1.5.4

Kernel 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix
Compiled by SHARP
ROM version 1.40 JP

No custom ROMs or anything.

1. Can I get X11 to run? Where can I find the install package? This download link does not work, in fact the project does not exist.

2. Why am I having trouble with SDL? I have been able to run zmamefull (albeit extremely sluggishly) in the past, so I'm guessing it's okay. I'm trying to run znester but all I get is "Could not initialize SDL: No available video device." Is there something I've done wrong?

3. Where can I get gcc? I've found a zgcc package, but it didn't install properly. Without gcc I have to find .ipks for everything. I'd like to try compling gopher and retawq if possible.

I appreciate anyone's help
