General Discussion / Zaurus has competition from Windows?!?
« on: June 06, 2004, 03:23:04 am »
The OQO prototype has appeared at WinHEC and it can be attached to a docking station and docked to be used as a standard desktop. I\'m pretty impressed with their cable with dongles for firewire, USB 1.1 and a standard VGA output for hookup to projectors

Now if someone ports the entire thing to Linux, I\'ll drop my C760 and buy one immidiately man! 256 Meg of RAM might not be enough to give a good Win XP experience but I\'m sure that a properly setup Linux machine would run really sweet on it. Already Debian and pdaXrom runs so well on the C760 and thats with lower specs.

Check it out!

Concerning the OQO device, I did contact them about 2yrs ago when I first saw the thing advertised and asked if it would run Linux.  They said they were very interested in hiring Linux driver developers or would be open to offering NDA\'s to people willing to develop drivers.
If I could run Linux on it, I might be willing to buy one off eBay about a year after they are released.  No way would I pay $1500-$2000 for a handheld computer... not unless it came with a decent docking station so it could truly replace my desktop.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.6-pre1 + 860 = big fat failure !!

Well, I have seen quite a few C760 users around in the forums who have 3.3.6pre1 running... maybe they could do a NAND Block test on their machine for us?

Some C-models come with a couple of bad blocks in flash. The eraseall binary in the Sharp Updater RAMdisk doesn\'t remap these, so it is possible that your filesystem is trashed after that. This may be the reason for Opie not starting. There\'s nothing we can do about that except to include our own tools (i.e. eraseall) with the next versions of OZ.

Ahh I guess this is the reason why my OZ 3.3.6pre1 installation never did work on my C760... I did a NAND Test and it does detect a single bad block in flash

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.6pre1 installation problem for SL-C760

Nope... just attempted another failed 3.3.6pre1 attempt... NAND Backup\'d the C760, copied updater.sh, initrd-gcc3.bin (renamed to initrd.bin) and zimage-husky.bin (renamed to zimage.bin) as stated in the README.FIRST to a freshly FAT formated SD card and attempted to flash the ROM... stilll no go... same OpenZaurus Logo with the blinking cursor... oh well, guess its not going to work for me... 3.3.5 works fine for me thou...

Damn... the md5sums check out... I\'m begining to suspect the reason why it isn\'t working is due to some loading issue... going to attempt one more try later tonight.. going to NAND Restore my C760 again, then use a 32meg CF Card which I never used before and see whether that works... then again, the CF card shouldn\'t be an issue as 3.3.5 loads perfectly for me... :|

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.6pre1 installation problem for SL-C760

I just tried to re-run the 3.3.6pre1 installation and this time I suddenly noticed that for some reason, the second part of the installation (erasing flash?) doesn\'t reach 100% and it stops at just inline with the d on the ahead setence for some reason... it then reboots causing my problem.. anyone seen this before?

Anyway I tried one last attempt by shifting everything off the CF card, reformatting it and then re-downloading the stuff from the OZ site and trying to reflash the ROM...
end result: Still not working...

Oh well, back using 3.3.5 at the moment...

I decided to go for it.  I did what the README.FIRST document said to do, and I\'m now the proud user of a C760 with OZ 3.3.6pre1 on it.

Hi Lance, could you give me the md5sums of the files you used? I wonder whether there might have been some corruption issue on my end!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.6pre1 installation problem for SL-C760
« on: January 15, 2004, 10:15:25 pm »
Hi Everyone, I recently attempted to install OZ 3.3.6pre1 on my Sharp SLC-760 but unfortunately failed... I tried twice, once after a NAND Restore to Sharp ROM and another time after installing a working OZ 3.3.5 but both attempts leave me with a blank screen with the words OpenZaurus, the Cute Green Mascot and a blinking cursor...

What I did was to download updater.sh, initrd-gcc3.bin and zimage-shepherd.bin to a CF Card from http://www.openzaurus.org/official/experim...860/3.3.6-pre1/

Before flashing, I also renamed initrd-gcc3.bin to initrd.bin and zimage-shepherd.bin to zImage.bin

Anyone got any advise for me?

PS: Still staring at the screen hoping it will boot!
