OESF Announcements / New Gemini PDA forums added

A third party review of the prototype unit is now available: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/11/ge...totype_handson/
I Ordered one when the project first started. I am excited about it.
So far, they have lowered the screen resolution, which I don't mind much, it is still high.
They removed NFC, I view this as a mistake. There are a number of security uses for NFC, and having something built in was something I was looking forward to.
They slashed the battery size.  They said it is to maintain the size promised, and it makes sense. The battery should still be decent.
They mentioned the possibility of selling an extended battery. I hope that they do. At the very least, I hope they readily sell the standard battery.

For most programs that you might want to use, there is probably a program that works on the zaurus that can do the exact same thing. I have used multiple portable programs on an sd card when it is plugged into a computer, then used the same card in my zaurus. while the software I used was different, the files were the same, and it was very handy. Are there any specific programs you are wanting to use?

You can use VNC to remote control a computer that is running xp. I've done this before, and it will look like you have xp running on the device. Windows XP is designed for x86 based CPUs. the zaurus' uses ARM CPUs, so it is a different architecture.

I tried installing it on my sl-c860, but the ipk wouldn't install, said something went wrong.
I tried uninstalling the sdmmc-module I had installed that let me use the 4gb sd card, and tried installing again but it still failed. any suggestions?

Hardware Mods / C7xx Power Button

I had the same thing happen to my c860. My fix was some packing peanut. I cut tiny bits of foam from the peanut, and placed it surrounding the button. it took me about 10 minutes to get it lined up and back together without foam falling out of place. I did that about a month ago, and I haven't had a problem since.  I don't know how long the foam will last, but hopefully once it wears out it is just a matter of adding more to fix it.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Installing Angstrom On A Sl-c860
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:20:08 pm »
Hey everyone
I thought I would ask before I break something...
I want to try out angstrom on my sl-c860. First question. right now I have cacko 1.23. If I use the built in backup, I can just use that to restore everything later? (I am guessing after reinstalling cacko, I use the restore)
Second question, how to I actually install it?
I found this guide: http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/zaurus-c7x0-c8x0
and this feed:
http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/relea...12/images/c7x0/
it seems pretty straight forward, but I was worried about this:
Quote
Ensure that your C7×0 machine has a standard flash partitioning (e.g. as it was originally), flashing may fail if this is not the case
It has cacko now. will that work, or do I need to flash it with something else first?

Update:
to answer my own questions:
the backup will restore everything later, but you need to make sure the name of the backup file matches. (this seems to be a problem?)
What is means by standard flash, is setting the root partition size to 53MB. (this can be done with the partition tools on the cacko rom boot loader)
Also, something to note, the " Angstrom-opie-image-glibc-ipk-2007.12-r13-c7x0-installkit.tgz" is corrupt and will not work at all.
I hope that anyone else trying to do this might find this post useful.

Nathan.

New products and alternatives / Pandora Is Starting To Really Interest Me

Depending on what the keyboard is like, I might get one. I mainly use my zaurus for typing, so if I were to replace it, the keyboard would need to be good. other than that it looks like a good platform.

I'd be interested in buying one. $10+shipping.
my wcf-12 card stopped working a while ago, and they cost so much on ebay..

12
Hey, if you still have this, I am interested.

13
That is really cool.
I have been thinking about a way to make a possible battery charger to charge my second battery. Very good thinking.
now that I have seen it done I will give it a shot and see if I can get something working.
Great job.

I am current using an HP tc4200 tablet. I also have an IBM r60(provided by the school I attend.)

The Thinkpad is a very nice computer. it seems to be very well built and sturdy.

But the HP tablet is another story. I am completely amazed by what this computer has survived. It is a long story that I won't get into, but it got left on the roof of a car, and it flew off at 50mph. (I think that was the highest my blood pressure has ever been.)
it survived with a tiny crack on the edge of the screen. Everything worked except for the Pen it flew out of the computer and got crushed by a car.  I got a new pen and it worked great. about two months later I got into a car accident on my way to school. the table was in my bag on the seat next to me. It flew forward when I t-boned the other car and slammed into the dashboard.
The ram was unseated, and a small part of the case broke off, but that was it. (I was able to glue it.)
I am using the computer right now. it is simply amazing how tough it is. Both times the computer was in standby.
So at the moment I am partial to HP, but I have been happy with IBM also.

I just hope my Zaurus doesn't through anything like that. I am not sure how well it would fair.
