General Discussion / I Mounted A 2 Gig Sd Card!

I feel that movies playing are a good test of real time use of the new driver. So far, I see no flaws with this driver. Thanks again pelrun. You have given the venerable 6000 a much needed usability boost after a long stale spell.

We 6000 users can't thank you enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=165085\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Trip or no trip I couldn't resist, I tried the driver on my stock SL-6000 and it works perfectly with a 2Gb PNY card. Just in case I also put a copy of the original driver on the CF before renaming it with "old" and then rename pelrun patched driver with the name as the original Sharp driver. Rebooted and ... voila', 2Gb card mounts and works without a hitch. System Info from within Qtopia sees it with the right size and everything. I copied the content of my 1Gb Sandisk SD to my laptop with a USB card reader, copied from laptop to 2 Gb PNY, inserted 2Gb in Zaurus... DONE!

The PNY SD doens't hit me as blazing fast, but it doesn't feel slower than the Sandisk, even when playing a couple of large movie clips with Zplayer. I don't have time for now to do comparative transfer data rate tests, but I will.

Amazing a fix came only after three plus years the SL-6000 has been out. I guess the fact that >1Gb SD price has become ridiculously low only recently played a role.....

No matter, pelrun: YOU DA MAN!!!!

Just replaced /lib/modules/2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix/
kernel/drivers/block/sharp_mmcsd_m.o with this module (after saving old driver as sharp_mmcsd_m_old.o) and rebooted. Put in a 2 GB SD card formatted fat16, with 1.9 GB of movies. Movies play fine!!

df reports:

1960064 KB as size of SD card with
1932960 in use and
27104 available  (99% in use)

Next would like to try re-formatting as ext2.

Looks great!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Oak,

thanks for trying it on the SL-6000, I believe you are the first of the Tosa owners. I'm leaving on a biz trip tomorrow so I'm not sure I'll have time to try it myself with my 2Gb PNY card before I leave. AAAAARGH, the wait is killing me.....

Pelrun,

thank you so much for the new driver. You should add to your signature "The Genius from the Land Down Under"   Nice job, mate!!!!!

As always, Linux rules.

Ok, I've attached a test module for the 6000. No guarantees this thing will even insmod properly, let alone work. It's not like I actually have a 6000 to test it on...

Remember, it's only for older-style 2G and 4G cards. SDHC cards will not work. Also, remember to rmmod the original sharp module before you try this out.

EDIT: I realised this morning there's a bug in this, it won't work (it'll probably identify 2G/4G cards as just 1G.) Will fix tonight.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=164922\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Pelrun,

I'll settle for the old SD!!!!! If you really make this work on the SL-6000 with the stock ROM and kernel, you are going to become a celebrity among Tosa owners......

GO pelrun! And sincere thanks for attempting this. No matter the outcome, I really appreciate it.

6000 - Tosa / Sd Limit

One thing I can never understand is: if you can live with Sharp stock ROM, why can't you live with 1G SD limit. When I was on stock ROM, 1G SD is more than enough. You can always use huge XXGB CF for storage. And unlike other Z, we don't have to swap CF for wifi card.

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=164851\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Few reasons:
- I'd rather keep the storage on SD and leave the CF for other stuff, i.e. Bluetooth
- Once the SL-6000 goes to Zaurus heaven I'm going to get a clamshell, probably a C1000 (not a fan of HDD storage). In that case I'll definitely need the CF for at least Wi-Fi, so I rather not spend money now on >1Gb CF memory I can't use in the future.
- My wife has a digital camera using SD. Every time I have upgraded the SD for the Z, she got my old card and she gave hers to our daughter MP3 player or camera. It may sound silly given the price of memory these days, but try to buy new SD for everyone in the family evey six months.....
- And finally, if the 1Gb barrier can be broken with the stock ROM, why not??!!

I play all the time with Linux distributions on my notebook, I wish I had the same confidence in doing so on the Z. You never know, I may decide to try an alternate ROM. I can always go back to stock after all.

The fix is really trivial - I think I can patch the 6000/c7xx modules no problem. (Yes, I have looked at the 6000 module internals. No, it is not dramatically different to the others.)

pelrun,

it would be great if you could do that! Unfortunately I do not have the necessary experience and knowledge to help, but I'm willing to try whatever you can come up to on my stock SL-6000.

Look forward to see more from you next week. And get some sleep...

Thanks to all those that replied with some information on the SL-6000. I did post also on one of the SL-6000 specific forums. In fact, I found by chance this other thread. I saw the very short reference to the SL-6000 in DrWowe first posting but then all the rest of the postings focused on the clamshell models. Being this one of the General Forums and seeing all the activity DrWowe post generated, I figured I'd give it a try here as well.

I work in the semiconductor industry and I have tried too to find information on the Toshiba chip, so far unsuccessfully... Beside the SD limit, getting some info on the video section of it would help too with attempting a better acceleration.

I shall continue my quest.....

Hello all,

I read each and every posting in the thread and (unless I missed something), it seems you all have a clamshell Z.

So, the key questions for me is:

Has anyone tried this driver on a stock SL-6000, with the Sharp ROM 1.12 and Linux Kernel 2.4.18? If yes, given the origin of the driver, would it mess up the built-in Wi-Fi configuration?

Thanks in advance.

If you are using 2.4 kernel (e.g. Sharp ROM, pdaXrom 1.1.0 beta1 and etc), you will hit the 1G limit because of the SD driver. If you are using 2.6 kernel (recent OZ> 3.5.4.1 or Angstrom), so far 4G (non-SDHC) works fine here.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=164626\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm using a "stock" SL-6000, with the Sharp ROM version 1.12 and Kernel version 2.4.18. I rather not flash the Z with another ROM. I like the stability of the Sharp ROM and for what I do with my SL-6000 I'm not sure switching to a different ROM is worth the hassle, as minor as that might be.

So, if I stick to the stock ROM , is there any way around the 1GB limit:

- Availability of a new open source driver that works with the 2.4.18 kernel?
- Kernel update + maybe a new driver?
- Would a particular type of 2Gb SD work with the stock ROM and kernel? That's what the vendor at the link I posted previously seems to imply.

I have researched all the posting and information I could find on the internet, but I have not been able to draw a final conclusion. A lot of the suggested "remedies" I found are for the clamshell Zs, the SL-Cxxx series, and I do not know enough about the differences with the SL-6000 to be able to say if any is applicable in my case.

I have been using Linux on my desktop and notebook PC for over two years now, so I'm not afraid of Command Line based updates, hacks and manual editing of config files. I just need some guidance on the specifics for the SL-6000. It is the best pocket computer I have ever owned and I do not want to brick it (although it might be a good excuse to get one of those SL-C1000 that can be found for less than $400.... )

Thanks in advance.

It goes without saying that the PNY SD 2Gb card I got today didn't work... Has anyone seen or better yet tried this:

http://www.techgiant.com/index.cfm?fuseact...=-50946&pid=381

I do not know enough of the SD standard or about how the Z handles the SD slot to say if it is real or not.

Opinion/experience anyone?

6000 - Tosa / How To Install Opera7.55 On Sl6000

In a previous post for OZ some one mentioned that 'Please note that this is for an SD-card install... and you should remove or edit the postinst for any other install destination.' in https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15885

I haven't try or attempt to modify the mentioned file, hack, i don't even know where is the posyinst..   so, for all the 'remaining' experienced 6k user, can some one check if installation to SD is possible? also i have a copy of the extracted opera 7.55 without all the junk, ofcourse no voice command as well, let me know if anybody need it.

Thanks.
P/S: did someone notice that on sharp's site, it says re-launching the development project, i'm not sure, i saw that in the link in opera 7.55 home page, but got redirected right after that.

Edit: my bad, it says 2002, apparently the site has not been updated in decades.. i felt left out being a 6k user..

egg8178,

it would be great if you could post the de-junked Opera or point me to a web page with it. I'm definitely NOT going to use the voice command option.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I also removed libpdf from the plugin directory, another Meg of memory saved.... I actually moved it to a backup directory on my SD card, just in case.

installed thank you very much for the help:)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=72214\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hello guys,

let's see if I can revive this thread...

I just installed Opera 7.55 on my SL-6000 with original Sharp ROM. Everything works fine, although as expected it refused to be installed on CF or SD and I had to put it on the Internal Flash. No big deal, I can live with that, even though I was hoping I could install it on CF/SD so that for a while I could have both version 7.25 and 7.55 for comparison purposes.

At any rate, here are my questions for those with more experience than me:

1. I was expecting to end up with more or less the same space occupied on the Internal memory (7.55 installed should mean 7.25 removed, right?) I have instead about 3Mb MORE occupied compared to when I had the "stock" Opera 7.25. Is it because some of the old files have to be removed manually or rather is it Opera 7.55 just a bigger installation? Reading through this thread all the comments about the voice command function makes me thing it is just Opera 7.55 being bigger....

2. Is there any way to "trick" Opera (or any other program for that matter) into being installed on CF/SD even it would have to go on the internal memory? With Opera 7.55 installed I'm a little over 18Mb taken on the Internal memory, I'd like to keep it lighter if possible.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Tosa rocks.............

Hi guys,

I'm afraid it might only be about the memory controller, but what about this:

6000 - Tosa / Kismet on the 6000

Hi.
I have been tryng to install kismet with
https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to...on_the_SL-6000L
but i have a problem when i get to step 7 with the ulcx i cant use it.,i dont know why but my Z dont recognize ulcx.
So i think is better to try with another version without the ulcx.
Can anyone tell me what files do i need?.
I am not sure about what kismet version and if i need the same libcap and the libstdc ,kismet qt etc.
Thanks.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hello poor,

if you are still hanging around here and struggling to have Kismet working, this is what I did on my stock ROM SL-6000:

- I went to the "Kismet How to" page here:

[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to_run_Kismet_on_the_SL-6000L]https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to...on_the_SL-6000L[/url]

- Downloaded with the SL-6000 the following packages and library:
* kismet_3.0.1c-20031228
* kismet-qt_2.0.0
* libpcap0_0.7.2
* libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so

- Followed very carefully the instructions on the "How to"  (only difference being that I downloaded libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so into my CF card and then from there I copied it to /usr/lib using File Manager instead of the command line)

I had Kismet running in about 15 minutes, including the time needed to download the packages and the libraries. It worked at the first attempt, not issues whatsover.

A couple of tips:
- Don't forget to run Kismet as "root" tapping and holding its icon and checking the "Execute with root privilege"
- Since you are at it, uncheck the "Display with magnified screen" box. With all the real estate of the glorious SL-6000 display there is not need to magnify. Looks much nicer in hi-rez at full blown 640x480!!

Now, I do have a couple of questions for the more "senior" users of Kismet:
- Since this set-up with the old version is working, is there any major advantage in upgrading to the latest arm package? What are the key differences?
- Is there any way to tweak the .conf files to have KismetQt diplaying more information when set to "summary"? There is plenty of unused space on the line!
- Everything seems to be working fine selecting either "Sharp- prism2" or "Sharp3x-prism2" as "Scheme" in the "Config" tab. Is one of the two best for the SL-6000?

6000 - Tosa / Kino Version 0.4.2 On Sl-6000
« on: July 17, 2005, 10:14:27 pm »
Hello guys,

for about a year I had kino 0.3 + mplayer from kino 0.22 on my SL-6000L. Today I too installed kino 0.4.2 + mplayer W100, and I have a couple of issues:

1. When not playing full screen, the video window is not centered within the kino GUI but is stays in the upper left corner of the SL-6000L screen. I didn't have this issue with the older version of kino + mplayer. Any idea how to fix this? Maybe is there a command I can pass to mplayer with the coordinates of the screen where to place the video window?

2. It seems to me that the video quality is a little lower than with kino 0.3. Could it be that the these new versions of kino and mplayer, while more featured, are "heavier" for the SL-6000L to run?

I have the original Sharp ROM on my SL-6000L.

Any hint?

Thanks in advance, Paolo.
