Deals and Great Z Buys / Z Vendors In Hong Kong Or Tokyo Narita?
« on: September 28, 2006, 04:39:14 pm »
I'll be taking a trip with brief layovers at Tokyo Narita airport, and a multi-day stay in Hong Kong in November/December.

Does anyone know of shops in either location that sell Zaurii and accessories?

Hardware Mods / Replacing Bt Dongle's Connector?
« on: August 03, 2006, 03:31:57 pm »
A thought occured to me while I was looking at the various Bluetooth options...  Has anyone modified a Bluetooth dongle directly by replacing its connector with a Mini-A connector?  If so, where did you get your hands on Mini-A connectors?

Anything cheaper that people have been happy with?  I could deal with a few mm protrusion if the cost is more reasonable than the roughly $90+ I've been seeing for the Socket one.

User Request for Applications / Zfceu Source!
« on: August 01, 2006, 04:15:17 pm »
I did a little detective work and got in contact with the original author of ZFCEU.  Although he no longer maintains it, he did upload the source files to his new website.

I'm attaching said source files here.  If anyone wants this operational under OZ 3.5.4, etc... now it's possible without the problematic Compat Libs.

If you do recompile, please post the IPK!

General Discussion / Article Mentions A Zaurus Prototype

Very light on details about the Zaurus involved, but the new screen / scanner / speaker technology sounds interesting.  Has anyone seen this at a trade show or heard anything else?

Couple questions: Can an SL-C3100 or 3200 have its drive removed and behave like an SL-C1000?  If so, has anyone done so and then put a bluetooth or wifi CF card into the internal slot?

I've seen the amazing thread where they've added USB dongles into the empty space of the SL-C1000, but I don't have that much combined hardware and software hacking talent.  I could probably snap off an antenna and solder wires to relocate it, etc... but not much beyond that.  I was just thinking this might be a cool way to get some sort of Internal wireless that's as well supported as everyone else who uses the chosen CF card.

I can start BDicty, the window appears, but there is no characters appearing in the windows (even when I type some). Moreover, the windows seems to "flash" sometimes.
There's several other threads about why compat is no longer recommended, etc... but this particular problem can probably be solved as discussed in the Opera thread:

User Request for Applications / Kismet Qt/e
« on: June 06, 2006, 06:59:54 pm »
As an OZ/OPIE user, I've noticed that the compat libs are now highly discouraged.  Kismet Qt/E is a nifty UI for Kismet, but the last binaries require compat libs.  If anyone can rebuild this, it'd be much appreciated!

The _7QString.shared_null error may be to do with needing to use the compat libs. Are you using them?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

i sure hope not: [a href=\"http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.handhelds.openzaurus.devel/825]http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.handhe...aurus.devel/825[/url]
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=129302\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Whoa!  I was just redoing a 3.5.4 install and noticed I couldn't find the compat libs package to install anymore.  The problem is, a *lot* of cool / useful apps are stuck in the lost zone a this point.  No more ZFCEU, Opera, Hancom, ZEthereal, Jeode everything, NetHack, Qtella, Qtopia Gnuboy...

I'm guessing this is why my previous installations were also getting corrupted / fubared, but wow, that's a lot of apps to kiss goodbye.  Does anyone have suggested alternatives to these that run decently with OZ3.5.4 / OPIE?  Konq is okay compared to Opera.  Most new emulators run in landscape, which means unusable for the U.S. Zaurus models.  Is there another JVM buried in the latest feed that I don't know about?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 W/4gb Sd Or A C3x00 Model

If it helps you decide, as far as I know, C1000 will not work with SD cards greater than 1GB.

I thought that was a software issue that was resolved recently...  it's actually a hardware limitation?

C1000/3x00 Hardware / C1000 W/4gb Sd Or A C3x00 Model
« on: May 08, 2006, 04:24:10 pm »
I'm considering an upgrade to one of the SL-Cxxx units from my SL-5500.  I've been using a 256MB SD card as my "Hard Drive," and I could happily continue a similar tradition.

So, what I'm trying to decide between is this:

An SL-C1000 with a 4GB high-speed SD card almost always installed as the "Hard Drive."  (here's such a card: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...tCode=82502-19)

--or--

An SL-C3x00

What I've ID'ed as pro's and cons already are:
-SL-C1000 + 4GB card is still about $100 US lower than a SL-C3200
-SL-C3200 has 2 more GB
-I lose/use my SL-C1000 SD port, and use the power supplied to it full time

What I have little clue about though, is the following:
Does the SL-C1000 + SD card route end up with lower energy consumption?
Does the SL-C1000 + SD card route end up with higher speed?

If yes to both, I really think I'd prefer that path, despite it not being "the best" I can get right now.  Does anyone have other factors they can think of that I should include in my evaluation?

And here's a crazy idea, that seems a bit more readily useable than the current efforts to solder in USB accessories:
Is it possible to treat a SL-C3200 like a SL-C1000 by removing the microdrive, and if so, could I then use the other slot for misc peripherals like a Bluetooth card?  I could possibly splurge for something like that.
