Is a flashable ROM image available for the C3000 yet? Where are the ROMs for the other Japanese Zauri located?

Also, perhaps someone could start one of those online petitions and direct Sharp to it?

To get the Symbol Wireless Networker working with the C3000:

Enter these commands into the terminal:
su
cd  /home/etc/pcmcia
vi spectrum.conf

Delete the # from the begining of the second line
Enter a # at the beginning of the third line
Save the changes
Reboot

(see this thread for more info on using VI)

C1000/3x00 General discussions / SL-3000 First Impressions - GREAT!
« on: November 18, 2004, 10:11:56 am »
(gift-registry thing put me to sleep last night)

My C3000 First-Impressions/Observations (Hardware Only)

Audio: The speaker in the C3000 beats the C760's in both maximum volume and audio quality. I'm sure it helps that Sharp put a speaker grill in the C3000, instead of hiding the speaker somewhere in the unit like they did with the previous C-series.
Interesting fact: When the C3000's volume is turned up to the max, vibrations can be felt in the base of the unit.

Keyboard: The keys of the C3000 do not have quite as audible of a "click" as the C760's. IMO, this is a good thing; all that clicking on the C760's keyboard annoyed me greatly. The keyboard framework of the C3000 is solid, whereas the C760 keyboard would flex when a key was pressed, especially around the edges. Also, the keys on C3000's keyboard are softer, so it seems less tiring to type on.

Build Quality: The C3000 retains the excellent build quality of the previous Zauri and  improves on it. The metal hinge of the C3000 should provide better structural integrity than the previous C-series. The C3000 does away with the space-wasting large-battery cover of the previous C-series; now the base of the unit is one piece (except for the small battery cover). My only complaint is that the battery cover flexes and creaks when pressure is applied.

Accessories:
-The included USB sync cable is a standard USB Mini-A to full-size A adapter that you can now find in any electronics store.
-The EA-BL11 battery included with the C3000 is 1800mAh; the large-battery included  with the C760/C860 is 1700mAh. Both batteries are electrically and physically compatible (tested by switching batteries between C3000 and C760)
-The C3000 comes with both a plastic CF and SD card insert to protect those slots when not in use.
-The included plastic stylus feels cheap and light. Do yourself a favor and pick up some metal replacements.
-The included EA-72 100V AC adapter is the same as those used with the previous C-series Zauri

Other Observations:
-The IR port, having been moved to the left side of the unit, will either be a help or a hinderance, depending on the position of the IR port on the devices you need the C3000 to communicate with. This works perfectly with my Nokia 6230 because I can now position the 6230 to the left of the Zaurus so that it is facing me (IR port is on the right side of phone)
-The email light of the previous C-series has been turned into an HDD indicator light. I find it facinating for there to be such a thing on a "PDA", and it is mesmerizing to watch! There is an option to revert the HDD light to an email indicator, though.
-The I/O port's cover is not easily taken off; there is only a small hole through which a paper clip must be inserted and pried out. I seems as if Sharp does not want the user to open it. I have not tested the I/O port of the C3000, and will not do so until I can be sure that it will cause no damage.
-The LCD position sensor is now below the hinge. Therefore, the screen will switch to portrait only when the LCD is fully rotated and locked into place.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / SL-C3000 Support?
« on: November 18, 2004, 08:50:17 am »
Laze:
By the way, I want pdaXrom on the C3000 because it is one of the major reasons I decided not to abandon the Zaurus altogether and switch to the OQO. I would not be bugging you about this if I did not think that pdaXrom and the pdaXrom team are awesome

Archimark:
All of your thoughts on the C3000 eerily mirror mine... Now I don't have to do a review!
I will post some of my observations later after my girlfriend releases me from creating a  gift (wedding) registry with her

Bombur:
Conics will convert the C3000 to English only if specifically requested. In other words, they won't ask (well, they did not ask me). However, the conversion is so easy for even a Linux/Zaurus newbie to do that it really makes no difference either way.
Any CompactFlash peripherals that worked on the previous C-series Zauri should work with the C3000. If you were refering to USB peripherals: I personally have not yet gotten a chance to test the USB Host functionality. I will be looking for the proper cable tomorrow, and will report my results here after I have had a chance to perform some testing. I do not expect much at this point, though, because Conics.net reported that the Sharp ROM currently does not support the USB Host functions.

C1000/3x00 General discussions / English conversion?
« on: November 16, 2004, 09:00:10 pm »
mcconvert worked without issue on my C3000. There is still a small bit of residual Japanese, which shows up as boxes; that was fully expected, though.  I am very glad that this handy little app is available, since I wrongly thought that my C3000 had already been converted to English by Conics
(In all fairness, their site states that English conversion is available upon request)

Unless you are trying to keep Japanese language compatability, you can follow the simple instructions at Conics.net to convert the C3000 to English

Zaurus - pdaXrom / SL-C3000 Support?
« on: November 16, 2004, 11:40:05 am »
Laze:
Could you please clarify your position on pdaXrom support for the C3000? Will you set up a fund for the purchase of a C3000 for the pdaXrom team?

I now have a C3000, and am williing to provide any information and perform any testing  needed to help port pdaXrom to the C3000 (within my capbilities and while keeping my Zaurus reasonably safe from being bricked)

GPL requires them to release their patch - which they did in the past. Requesting the source may speed up that process.

Out of curiosity, I'd appreciate you giving me the output of:

dmesg
cat /proc/cpuinfo
lsmod
ls -l /dev
mount
Mickeyl:
Here you go!
(the output is in the attached file)

C1000/3x00 General discussions / SL-C3000 / ROMs
« on: November 16, 2004, 09:51:01 am »
Cyril92,
I asked the same question in both the pdaXrom and OpenZaurus forums. Laze in the pdaXrom forum did not give me any hope for pdaXrom on the C3000 anytime soon. He basically said that we will have to wait until they have a C3000 to work with. Mickeyl in the OpenZaurus forums gave me the impression that porting OZ to the C3000 should be relatively easy. We will have to wait until the source code for the C3000 ROM is made available, though, which could take a few weeks.

By the way, I also received my C3000 yesterday. I have had precious little time to play around with it, though  . What are your impressions thus far?

InfoSync posted a news story yesterday stating that the WCF54G is now available. Perhaps retailers will actually have them in stock soon!
