General Discussion / Using A Zaurus As A Remote Media Player
« on: October 20, 2008, 11:02:29 am »
While trying to figure out what to do with my old 5600 I came up with the bright idea of using it as a remote media player up high in the kids room attached to some speakers, think wakeup call, stories, music etc.

I know that I can do most of this on the command line but I am at a loss as to the best way of doing this remotely maybe from a web interface, think Soundbridge or squeezebox lite. Or more importantly how my wife can do it. I am not tied to a distro as I need (okay want) to reflash anyway

Any suggestions?

Based on the dates you might have already have something. But just in case not. I listen to a lot of podcasts and MP3 audio books (as well as music) so having bookmarking facilites (not just resume where you were when you turned the player off).

I have a Creative Zen Nano V+. It's excellent for listening to podcasts, audio books etc. You can save upto 10 different bookmarks. And. Also you can 'fast forward' through MP3 files. However, I haven't found the option so that I can resume listening from where I was when I turned the player off (unless I create a bookmark).

5x00 Hardware / 5600 Will Only Run On External Power
« on: October 27, 2007, 03:12:47 pm »
I decided to power up my neglected 5600 only to find that it will only power up when connected to external power. If I remove the external power the 5600 dies. I have checked the battery by swapping it with my 3100 both the 5600 and 3100 batteries work in the 3100 while both fail in the 5600.

The 5600 was working okay when I last used it so I don't think anything could have physically happened it. Also the 5600 is charging its own battery without any problem.

Any suggestions?

Is the akita version the best for a C3100?

I haven't flashed my Z in almost a week, getting twitchy!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What No Firmware - Wifi Misery
« on: March 18, 2007, 12:20:32 pm »
Seems to work if I use orinoco rather than hostap, through the very blunt instrument of renaming hostap_cs.conf and letting the hermes_cs.conf pick up the cards instead, I just cannot figure out why hostap on Pdax decides that a working card has lost it's firmware?

I know that I should probably just leave this alone as it is working but where would the fun be in that!

Also orinoco doesnt really handle the transition back from Kismet very well!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What No Firmware - Wifi Misery
« on: March 17, 2007, 02:00:38 pm »
I have 4 wifi cards, three report missing primary firmware after a few minutes use the other a senao intersil prism  card has the fantastic ability to periodically tell me that my access point is out of range even though it is within 2 meters of mt C3100 at the time.

The other 3 cards are a Dlink DWL-660W, Ambicom WL1100C, elink XI815
All are prism cards, I have tried firmware upgrades and downgrades only to find that as soon as I want to do anything useful dmesg reports "no primary F/W"

Typically I can do an ipkg update sucessfully but as soon as I try to install or browse more than a couple of pages my wifi dies.

One or even two cards going faulty and producing the same error is plausible -  just about, but 3 cards going faulty, two of them purchased within the last 2 months going faulty makes me suspect my hostap drivers. Why does the hostap driver try and reload firmware to the card after a few minutes/megs?
is there any way to stop it doing this?

Am I the only one experiencing this?

have you tried /dev/mmcda rather than /dev/sdc ?

I have previously moved from OE back to cacko and don't remember ever using
/dev/sdc for my SD cards (1G Danelec and 1G kingston)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxii13 Usage
« on: February 15, 2007, 05:05:22 am »
I am using pdaXii akita base on my C3100, but I woulds use a Sally full version. apart from some wifi card recognition issues (sometimes I know you sometimes I don't) and my battery being flattened in approx 2-4 hours the world is a grand place!

I find the akita version much more responsive  and stuff just works!
Thanks for all the hard work I will help as much as I can but two toddlers with chickenpox are soaking up most of my time at the moment!

Cxx0 Hardware / Wifi Issues
« on: January 07, 2007, 01:50:10 pm »
I have a the same issues with botha an Ambicom and a no name card that shows up as a sanao something or other. I have flashed the latest prism firmware on both cards, this has made no difference.
What does work however is to hold the end of the card shifting finger position until I get a solid green light while it connects (I kid you not - low tech but it works! )
I do get intermittent messages about firmware missing but I am finding it hard to believe that it is a hardware problem on both cards.

Hello All,

I am running Cacko 1.23 on a c760 and I am having issues with the wifi networking. I have used 2 different manufacturers wifi cards, but unforetunately they both have the exact same chipset (Intersil Prism 2.5 with primary firmware 1.1.1 and secondary firmware 1.8.4, according to hostap_diag). The network stays up for a minute or two and then I get the following type of message streamed to dmesg:

wifi0: hfa384x_cmd_issue - cmd was busy for 5000 usec
wifi0: hfa384x_get_rid: CMDMODE_ACCESS failed (res=-100, rid=fd51, len=6)

and other similar messages starting with:
wifi0: hfa384x_ - ...

Please help, not much I can do with this thing without network support :-(

General Discussion / Going To England

Most USB / AC adaptors are only rated to approx. 600MA - not enough to charge a Zaurus as I found out on what turned out to be a very boring trip as all my reading material and last few episodes of Lost were on my C3100!

The PSP accessories work for me, I have used the own brand ones sold in GAME, I have used the car charger and a rechargable external battery pack with success. At worst when you get to Europe you can pick up a generic PSP charger that will probably be dual voltage so you can use it when you go home to that watered down electricity in the states ;-P

On a slightly more expensive note I picked up a nice little gadget called a powermonkey that will do the job for practically all devices (phone, PDA, MP3 some cameras) with adaptors for most countries AC power.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Trust-A-Mon...ces-38852.shtml

slightly dramatic review from the world of Walter Mitty http://www.eyespymag.com/powermonkey.htm

I recharge the powermonkey, then just plug it into my device and let it recharge my SE K800i / C3100 / iriver H320 / Plantronics 640 in my pocket or bag. Saves carrying an ass load of chargers and cables. The other benefit is that you can recharge on the move or while using the device.

Enjoy your trip !

alot of the devices i have been getting now charge from a usb  port, so the kindly  provide a charger wiith a usb port in one end that works oon 120v to  240v (its all switchmode stuff anywoy aand would probelly work on 60v if i tested it )

anyway the good thing is they come with a universal adaptor (so they only havve to make one power ssupply for the whole world) and they are tinny (i have one thats the size of a matchbox

combind this with a sync aand charge cable for the Z and you can charge most modern electronics

if you need to power more than one device then i recomend a very cheap hub (the cheaper the better as they dont do proper powerr managment) plug it into the charger and you have several portts capable of powering severaal devices, plus you have a hub for when you need it

if you need one then i would recomend buying somthing from hong kong on ebay as this is where i get them from (and somthing that charges off usb), i got one with  my PDA from HP, one with my GPS unit, one with my bluetooth headphones and i have several others from unkown sources. if you are in auustralia and need one PM me

funny thing is that it works great if you use a Male A to Malee A cable (you need to get some adaptors from those universal usb cable kits) and plug it into one socket, then plug the Z  into the host side so it controls it then plug in a USB hard drive, that waay you dont need an external power supply for the hard drive. might not work with a 3.5" drive however (they are fairly power hungry and normally need 12v as well

hope this helps

ps one last thing, try and get one that has a Amp output of 2A on the USB side, it helps if you power several devices.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Games Under Gpe
« on: July 28, 2006, 05:38:26 pm »
The two things that keep me going back to cacko from OZ the lack of a good video front end like kino2 and are not being abe to get a proper chess game running, I have tried to get FLTK chess going without much sucess, so a working chess game for 3100 with OZ and GPE would get me converted full time!
A 6 month old and a 2 year old mean that watching movies just doesn't happen any more, but chess is a priority as you can put it down and come back later.
