General Discussion / SL-5600 Lots of Questions!

ROM from what I understand is made up of 3 files initrd.bin, updater.sh, zImage.bin.
initrd.bin = filesystem with all the apps
zImage.bin= Kernel
updater.sh= update script I presume
The names of these files change sometimes depending on which ROM you\'re trying to flash. eg sometimes zImage.bin is named zImage. Keep an eye on this to preserve your sanity.

1) From what I read, you can install a ROM and after that you can install any of the kernels above?

My understanding is that not all kernels will work with all ROMs. However if you find out different, let us know.

8) In order to use kismet and Wellenreiter what patch I need? orinico and hostap patch? Where and How to patch these drivers?

Kismet works on the 5600 Sharp ROM out of the box. Wellenwreiter does not, although it does work on the 5500, and on the OZ ROM. This is my experience anyway. Another person in these forums has got Wellenreiter to run on Sharp/5600 combo, so it might just be me.

9) How can I get the feature where I can change from landscape mode to potrait mode and vice-versa on the fly? I read that OZ can do that, can you enable this feature on other ROMs?

There is a rotation applet which can be used on the Sharp ROM and other ROMs I\'d imagine. You can find it on the www.killefiz.de site. This is much clunkier than the Opie implementation, and takes a good 20 seconds to rotate the screen. Ok in an emergency but not for general use.

General Discussion / Newbie: Get a 5500 or 5600?
« on: March 04, 2004, 07:22:28 pm »
True, I had no problems with my Asus Spacelink WL-110 card. However I did choose it because it uses the Prism 2 chipset. I think as long as you stick to cards based on that you should be OK.  I don\'t think this is a major omission on the part of Sharp. It does seem that most cards run on Hermes or Prism 2, so those are the obvious candidates to support.

Depending on how brave you feel, there is a driver out for the Symbol CF card:
   http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourri...html#SpectrumCF

Or you could just sell it on Ebay and get a Prism 2 based card for USD 30-50.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / issue with OZ 3.3.6-pre1 on SL5600

Was there any resolution to this? I can install things on my SD card of course, but obviously that isn\'t ideal

WEP problems.
===========
Got these working after a mere 5 hours hacking around with iwconfig. It seems that iwconfig won\'t let you alter the Network settings for some reason. Anyway, I finally figured out that you need to supply the WEP key in HEX, not ASCII in the network settings App - all 104 bits of it. Once you\'ve done that, the AP will give you an IP address. Then you use the udhcpc and route commands above, to get it on the net.

General Discussion / factory default
« on: March 03, 2004, 12:13:44 am »
Atfer installing OZ 3.3.5, returning to the Sharp ROM, and installing OZ 3.3.6 on my 5600 and inbetween installing (mostly unsuccesfully) a host of other software on there I suspect that my 5600 is less than clean. So I want to get a nice shiny new factory default 5600 as well.

However I\'ve tried the Formatting procedure mentioned above, and it just boots into OZ 3.3.6 again. Pah.  Do you think I need to reflash it with the Sharp ROM before I can do a factory fresh restore?

OK, here we go. This is what I did, which solved most of the problems:

Text Scrolling Problem:
================
I love this one -- such a quick fix and it improves the usability immeasurably
 - Open Konsole
 - Type \'su\' to become root (no quotes)
 - Type \'echo 1 ] /proc/sys/kernel/printk\' (no quotes)
Nice and clean now ... you might have to redraw the screen.
So that you don\'t have to do this every time you reboot, you can add it to the  /etc/init.d/rc.local script.

Now that you can actually see what you\'re doing ...

The Can\'t Connect to My Access Point / DHCP Problem
===================================
If you don\'t have WEP enabled:
 - Open Konsole
 - Type \'su\' to become root (no quotes)
 - Type \'ifconfig\'  to find out what your wireless card is. Mine was called wlan0, so I\'ll use that (nb, wlan zero, not capital oh)
 - Type \'udhcpc -i wlan0\' which should tell you you now have DNS servers.
Try accessing the internet, or just ping www.yahoo.com to see if you can find it. If this still doesn\'t work try
 - Type \'route\' . You\'re looking to see if you have a gateway configured. I didn\'t, so I did the next step to get one
 - Type \'route add -net default gw 192.168.0.1 netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1 wlan0\'

Now ping works and Konqueror does as well. Note that I haven\'t got this to work over a WEP connection, and I had to disable WEP  on my Access Point to get this far.

Now having solved this in a touchy feely sort of way, I still have no idea about the underlying causes for this behaviour. If anyone with a more detailed knowledge of the underlying OZ OS, would care to enlighten me, I\'ll stick it all in a report to the OZ crew and hopefully they\'ll be able to fix it in the next iteration.

I\'ve just installed 3.3.6 on my 5600 and got exactly the same problems. Always comforting to know you\'re not alone eh? ;-)

The problem seems to be with DHCP - OZ can find and connect to the Access point OK. If WEP is off, then it gets an IP address, but no DNS servers. If WEP is on, it gets neither IP nor DNS servers. I\'m trying to figure this out right now.

The text scrolling is indeed irritating - once it starts, it makes it very difficult to do anything on screen, as all the buttons move up with the screen. As far as I can see its something to do with the system messages produced when OZ can\'t find a network card. This was reduced a lot once I disabled the usb0 ethernet interface using the Network Settings applet.

Hong Kong / Looking for 860

You can also try Singapore which is a bit closer to Indonesia and I think its probably a bit cheaper. Sim Lim plaza or something like that. But I guess that depends if you go to Singapore or not ...

I have a 5600 which I had to get a friend to buy on a business trip to Singapore.

General Discussion / Newbie: Get a 5500 or 5600?
« on: February 27, 2004, 03:54:28 am »
Interesting. In that case I\'m wondering if I should do a reformat and a fresh install of the Sharp rom. Or even <gasp> the 3.3.6 pre release of OpenZaurus.

Sounds like something that could easily eat up my weekend ... ;-)

Windows Issues / USB driver crash
« on: February 26, 2004, 09:13:01 pm »
Just wondered if anyone else has been experiencing this: If I leave my Zaurus in the USB cradle running on battery, and it goes into suspend, it takes down my whole computer. Not just one of those \"Ahem, something seems to be amiss\" dialog boxes but a full-on heart-stopping crunch to the BSOD with a kernel dump.

Most annoying. And I can\'t really understand why it would affect Win2k so badly. Normally if I unplug a USB device it\'ll just warn me not to do it again.

Don\'t know if its related, but I also have never been able to get the TCP/IP sync drivers to work.

Maybe I\'ll try to find some more up to date drivers.

mutter. mutter.

Just giving my take as a 5600 user - I want to use openzaurus as well, but as I have a 5600, I can\'t for the moment. There are many many applications I want to run, but can\'t as they have been developed for the 5500 and now for the 7xx series.

Any examples? I have both a 5500 and a 5600 and I have virtually no apps that work on the 5500 and not the 5600.

Sorry, been away for a bit. OK well there\'s
    Gaim,
      Wellenreiter,
      The Rotation app
      zEthereal
      battery applet
      Zaurus Doom (just for giggles)
      scummVM
the front end to nmap (although commandline is fine)
      OpenZaurus ROM
I also had abortive attempts to install sitescooper, perl, and jpluck while I was trying to get a website snarfer set up on my Zaurus. I tried to set up a cross compiler to install Treepad to see if I could get that to work with no luck. Same story with airsnort.

OK these last few were a bit left-field, so I don\'t really count those, but my general experience has been one of frustration: install an app, spend three or four hours finding missing libraries, symlinking and cursing, and then give up.

Well that\'s all a bit negative. What I have been able to do is install Opie reader, kismet and Froot, which is something at least. And I\'m sure the other ones will become possible once the OpenZaurus team come up with a useable ROM for the 5600. Until then, I\'m waiting with baited breath ...

Software / nmap for 5600?
« on: February 19, 2004, 09:51:31 pm »
Yes I got nmap to run on the 5600 with Sharp ROM. However the graphical front end isn\'t working. It installs but doesn\'t seem to do much. I think I got the ipk from killefiz.de

I would like to get a new zaurus, but I\'m not sure what to get: a 5500 or 5600.
I like the idea of using openzaurus, I\'m pretty good at linux hacking too.
I want to use wireless internet and port some of my linux code over.

Just giving my take as a 5600 user - I want to use openzaurus as well, but as I have a 5600, I can\'t for the moment. There are many many applications I want to run, but can\'t as they have been developed for the 5500 and now for the 7xx series. It seems like the developers are missing out the 5600. I don\'t know the exact details of the differences between 5500 and 5600, but perhaps they are big enough that it requires serious work to repurpose each application.

I also have a coule of questions:
1. Can I play mp3 files from compact flash or an SD card?
2. How big of an SD card will work in the zaurus? Will 256 MB work?
3. Can I play MPEG1 videos from compact flash or SD?
4. Does Mame work well on the zaurus?
1. Yes.
2. 256 SD card is working in my 5600. WRT the comment above, there are now fast access SD cards coming out, so I don\'t think the speed issue is a problem anymore. CF are cheaper cards per MB, but if you\'ve got eg a wireless card plugged into the CF slot, you\'ll probably want to look at SD.
3. Yes
4. I couldn\'t get it to work on the 5600.

Windows Issues / Sync with Palm Desktop using tkcROM?
« on: February 12, 2004, 09:45:35 pm »
Same here. The only reason I haven\'t switched to another ROM is the need to synch up my information. Well that and the fact that theKompany.rom, OpenZaurus etc haven\'t made ROMs for the 5600

Using Sharp ROM 3.2 on an SL5600. Yes.

btw, anyone know where i can get the sharp rom from?  i cant find it on the cd :/

yeah, what were they thinking? ... Its really not a great deal of effort to burn a ROM installer onto the spare 500Mb of space on that CD.

You can also get the ROM from www.myzaurus.com
