Accessories / 4gb Cf Card Mounts Ro, Bogus Directories
« on: January 27, 2007, 03:08:34 pm »
I'm having a bit of a problem with a 4GB CF card on my Zaurus (SL-C860, Sharp ROM 1.40 JP, with tweaks for English).

Files written to the card on a Windows system appear ok on the Z, but so do a myriad of empty directories with bizarre names like "", "....", "fghijlkm.nop", and many with non-ASCII characters.  I cannot remove them because the card gets mounted read-only, according to "mount".

I figured I'd reformat the card as Fat16 on the Z, but that's not going well:

Code: [Select]
: su
: mkfs.vfat -F 16 /dev/hda1
mkfs.vfat: /dev/hda1 contains a mounted file system
: umount /dev/hda1
umount: /dev/hda1: Device or resource busy
: umount -f /dev/hda1
umount: forced umount of /dev/hda1 failed!
Mind you, the only app running is Qkonsole, and the cwd is /, so why it's "busy" I'm not sure.

Ok, now what?  Is there any point in editing /etc/fstab to force the mount to be rw?  Or maybe I need to comment out the /mnt/cf entry in /etc/fstab, reboot, reformat, uncomment, reboot?

Surely there's a better way...

Never mind.  Reinstalled and tied to it an app button.  Now I'm seeing the icon.

1.0.3 works great so far on my SL-C860 (stock Sharp ROM, hand-tweaked for English).  Only one peculiar problem -- when its running, I get no icon in the taskbar, so if I switch to another app there's no easy way to switch back    .  Any idea how to resolve that?  Thanks.

Hmmm, yes.  The Plus page does indeed say SendTo is added in that version.  Interestingly, further down the page it says that before registration, "Cannot send files to other applications".  That may well account for the  Open and OpenWith problems as well.

Yes, I'm aware of the MIME types.  I've edited the textedit.desktop and zeditor.desktop files to switch to the latter for text files, which duly changed the icon next to Open.  But Open did not work either before or after that change.

I was afraid I needed the plus version to use the SendTo, but it's odd that the author's web site doesn't seem to say so.

It still leaves the question of why Open and OpenWith are not working, though...

I've got Tree!Explorer on my C860, and the menu for files doesn't seem to be working as it should.  When I tap-and-hold on a file, the menu appears.  If I select 'open', I get the Properties popup instead.  If I select 'open with', nothing seems to happen.  If I select 'send to', the submenu just has a couple greyed-out items.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Also, I've tried editing the treeexplorer.conf file to add to the sendto menu:
[sendto]
item0=/home/QtPalmtop/bin/zeditor
...

but that seems to have no effect on the sendto menu, even after restarting Tree!Explorer?!?!

I've posted a note on the author's site, but I thought I'd seek to collected wisdom of y'all as well.

Cxx0 General discussions / May be a good time to buy an 860

Conics is currently offering the 860 for $650 USD, and throwing in a free CF WiFi card "while supplies last".  That was enough to get me to commit after months of dithering.  Brett tells me mine, with card, should ship tomorrow.

It looks like Sharp has changed its tune, at least a little, due to reaction to its original announcement.  Details here: http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/5502.html

Bother.  I was afraid I was mis-remembering.     Thanks.

OK, the C860 can act as a USB host for USB devices, right?  So the deck-of-cards-sized 20G Firefly USB disk http://www.smartdisk.com/Products/Storage%...ves/FireFly.asp
seems like it should be the perfect add-on, or am I all wet?

I notice the web page does not mention compatability with Linux, so that may be an issue.  Also, I wonder whether the data transfer speed would be high enough to play MP3s or MPEGs directly off of it.

Any thoughts?

In what way did Sagasu and Wajei stop working?
In Sagasu, with Lookup Method set to by kanji, I would select a kanji in the middle pane, and never get any entries to show up in the bottom pane.  Likewise, with Lookup Method phonetic, and bottom menu set to hiragana, I would enter japanese, and never get any translations to appear.  On the other hand, with the bottom menu set to romaji I could enter english, and the japanese translations would appear!

This used to work, and stopped about the same time my CF cards stopped working; that might not be coincidence.  I\'ve reinstalled Sagasu and the edict with no luck.  I\'ve installed WaJEi in its place with no luck.

Hope I\'m not too off-topic here.  I have a 5500 that\'s been having problems lately, so I\'m considering a C760 or 860 (hence my presence here).  One of the 5500\'s problems is that Sagasu and Wajei stopped working, so I have to wonder: Will zten and kanjinirvana work on a 5500?

I sent a note to the maintainers of the Sharp web site, asking why they still had no mention of the SL-6000.  The response said they were rethinking the contents, then noted:

The Zaurus 6000 is not availableyet.  It will not be for sold through retail channels but will be a corporate solution.  Enclosed is a link to a Press Release.
(There were actually two links, both pointing to the usual late-November Press Releases.)

This does not strike me as good news...
