Software / zRoadmap can\'t find maps
« on: February 09, 2004, 11:38:40 pm »
One possible solution to a lot of these problems would be to create a Linux app that could read the format of Microsoft\'s Streets & Trips maps and their exported Pocket Streets map files (for Pocket PC). I\'m pretty sure these maps use proprietary map data (which includes routing info, business, landmarks, attractions, etc), which you license from Microsoft when you buy the Streets & Trips package. Microsoft also gives away free maps that lack address information. It would be worth  buying the MS software to get access to the map data.

By the way, I was just taking another look at the display of Pocket Streets. The main differences seem to be:
- color fills for parks, water, etc
- labels for cities, landmarks, and streets that appear/disappear depending on the scale and density of the map
- thicker lines for arterial roads, at some scales

At high zoom levels, the zRoadmap display looks just like that of Pocket Streets, with the exception of the labels.

Software / zRoadmap can\'t find maps

Oh, one more thing. If you run into problems with zRoadmap, there is an error log in /home/zaurus/.roadmap/postmortem . Note the \'.\' before \'roadmap\'; it\'s a hidden directory that you can only access, I believe, from a terminal.

5x00 General discussions / What to buy - 5500 or 5600
« on: February 08, 2004, 03:15:49 am »
There is a long thread about the processors in the 5600. I\'m too lazy to link it for you, but it\'s not hard to find; just search the forums for \"pxa255\". Here the main points:
- The pxa250 chips have a bug which requires a workaround in the kernel that causes the to run slower than they need to.
- Sharp has switched to the pxa255 chips, but there are still a lot of pxa250 models being sold. If you buy a 5600 for $300 from Amazon, you don\'t get to choose; you get what\'s on the shelf.
- The packaging says what kind of chip is inside.
- There is a replacement kernel available for download that does not include the workaround. It runs faster, and doesn\'t seem to cause any problems.
- Performance may not be the most important criteria in choosing a PDA.

As far as the ROM and syncing issues are concerned, the only alternative ROM I\'ve found that is stable on the 5600 is the Zynergy5600 ROM. It\'s a modified version of the stock Sharp ROM. The OpenZaurus folks are working on the 5600 version right now. While it\'s true that the 5600s don\'t sync with Linux yet, I believe that this applies to all new 5500s as well. The new Sharp ROMs have changed the format of the PIM files, and no longer include an FTP server.

Accessories / Has anybody tried using this GPS CF device?

Can anyone tell me where to get a working installer for zRoadmap? The readme file at http://moria.ionkov.net/zaurus/zroadmap/readme.txt says
\"The zroadmap files are moved to http://community.zaurus.com/projects/zroadmap\".
There seems to be an ipk file there, but the package installer on my 5600 (with Zynergy) doesn\'t see it when I try to install it.

Mac Issues / SMB share on Mac OS X with 5600

I\'m curious; how long did it take you to figure out that the 5600 doesn\'t have an ftp server?

I spent a long, frustrating day trying to figure out why the ftp instructions for the USB net connection wouldn\'t work. I just got my 5600 recently, and didn\'t realize that it\'s sort of an orphan in the Zaurus community.

Mac Issues / Sync with Mac OS X 10.2.7

ZaurusMacSync seems to have some issues for me. I\'m on an 800Mhz. G4 eMac, and can\'t get the app to open (versio 0.8). I\'m trying a recompile on my own, so we\'ll see what happens. I\'ll post results

I think that ZaurusMacSync needs to moved onto your hard drive before you can run it.

I couldn\'t get ZaurusMacSync to run when I first downloaded it and tried running it from the dmg (drive image file) that it came on. It launched with no problem once I moved it to the hard drive. Maybe it needs to be on a writable volume.
