Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Usb And Osx On Oz 3.5.4
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:48:13 pm »
Here is an update on progress I have made connecting to a Macintosh.
I was able to connect to my SL 5500 by installing the following driver:
http://www.lucid-cake.net/osx_zaurus_usb/index_en.html

However, I am not able to connect from the Zarus back to the mac, let
alone to the internet.

I did succeed in connecting to my gentoo machine following the
Generic USB
how-to on this site.

I think xoscope,
http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/
or something like it would be interesting on a Collie.
I have used it on my powerbook in combination with
a homemade electromagnetic field detector that I plug
into my audio in port.

The screen on the Collie is a little small, and may pose
a problem in porting xoscope, but if sound in is working
(is it? I have not been able to record memo on GPE yet,
but that may be just my problem) this would be a great
device for acquiering all sorts of interesting low voltage
signals.

(EMF meter: some inductors, an opamp (optional if  you
have enough inductors or big enough coil), germanium
diodes to keep voltage swing close to half a volt, an audio
transformer (also optional), a 1/8 miniplug jack, and
male-male cable.)

I cannot get USB networking or storage  mode to work with my Collie
on Macintoshes. I have flashed OZ 3.4.5 with GPE. I am using a USB to Zarus cable
that has worked for networking with earlier versions. Plugging in to the USB port
on my Mac provides power, but has no othter apparent effect now. Switching between
Ethernet mode and storage mode in the settings pannel makes no difference.
Earlier, before I uninstalled experimental ext2fs support, I was
getting an error about not conforming to a USB standard from dmesg.
Plugging in to the USB port on a lab Mac produces the following output in
dmesg:

User Request for Applications / LaTeX and LyX
« on: October 24, 2005, 01:21:15 am »
For people asking for Lyx, I wonder if you have seen AUCTeX.
It is an indispensable part of typsetting mathematics and
now includes preview-latex, which I much prefer as a front
end for LaTeX since it gives me direct access to the underlying
LaTeX, while neatly rendering completed math sections until I enter
them again for more editing. I do this in emacs, so I am not
sure if this could be part of a 'small' solution. Not sure
if there is way to make it work with vim.

leland,

That makes sense- t for type not time
But I still get the same error. So for you this is working on a 5500?

Does Chinese handwriting recognition exist for the SL-5500 on the Open Zaurus ROM?

enter somethink like arecord -t 10 -w greatidea.wav and talk for 10 seconds (thats what the -t option gives you, 10 seconds)

does it work?

my guess is that the gpe or OZ recorders are front ends to arecord, but I don't know for sure.

Leland, thank you for the reply.
Does this work for you? I installed alsa-utils, which worked, except for a warning about
Code: [Select]
libgcc1 (>=3.4.2)which I seem to get on everything and which I think I saw somewhere can be ignored?
In any event, when I try the command you suggested, I get file format not found while attempting to record
and
Code: [Select]
audio open error: No such file or directory when trying to play back files I recorded with opie-recorder.

It should work without anything needing to be installed on XP/2k.

When I was working out how to get it all working in the first place I had the same problem as you do now - the drive shows up, but there's nothing there (I think it asked me to format when I tried to open the drive, that or it complained).

Take a look at the original thread and see if there's anything relevant there that I've forgotten.

I'll dig out my collie this evening and see if I can come up with any suggestions.

Thanks Lardman, I had a look.
The thread in which you posted your scripts started with you and Maslovsky having a problem that appeared similar to mine. You seemed to solve it by loading the modules, then suspending and waking up again before plugging in. I have just tried that sequence. On a PC I get that the USB device is malfunctioning and see an empty USB device listed. On a Mac I see the following in dmesg:
Code: [Select]
USBF:   2907.190        AppleUSBHubPort: Error 0xe00002ed: set feature (resetting port)
USBF:   2907.988        AppleUSBOHCI[0x1c7e800]::MakeDevice error setting address. err=0xe00002ed device=0x2747f00 - releasing device
USBF:   2908.788        AppleUSBOHCI[0x1c7e800]::MakeDevice error setting address. err=0xe00002ed device=0x1f8bc00 - releasing device
USBF:   2909.588        AppleUSBOHCI[0x1c7e800]::MakeDevice error setting address. err=0xe00002ed device=0x1f8bc00 - releasing device
This SL-5500 works fine in both network and USB mode in Linux where I mount it by hand as I do my card readers. (and my flash cards are fine on all computers with a reader).

Ok, I tried it on a lab mac and saw nothing. I tried it on a lab PC, and it shows up as a removable disk. but when I open it, it contains nothing.  These are public machines on which I cannot install things. I am out of luck?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Breaking The Sound (recording) Barrier
« on: January 24, 2005, 10:52:41 pm »
There is a thread with an almost identical name in which people are describing their
limmited success with sound recording on the SL-5600. However, on my SL-5500,
I do not think I am getting as far.

I have not been able to listen to the  less than 60 seconds (this is a problem!) recordings I have made with Opie recorder, but I can see in the wave window that they are noise as I record them. I have tried three types of microphone. An unpowered old style Mac microphone gives regular, almost square pulses of noise. A mono SGI microphone gives a continuous stream of noise. And earbud or regular headphones give nothing.

Has anyone been able to record sound on an SL-5500 under OZ 3.5.2? Is gpe-soundbyte
doing any better?

China / Chinese Fonts On Z

I already solved my Chinese fonts problem. Basically replace the default helvetica with efont. You can link helvetica to efont or rename the efont to helvetica then replace the original.
Where do you get efont (and how do you instal it if it is not an ipk)? I installed the unicode font in the Open Zaurus feed, but not sure what the name of that font is that (for example)  murphytalk.conf would need.
efonts are in the feeds of zaurus.cis92.net

lots of articles covered the Howtos in the links I provided above. Just found one comprehensive tutorial  Linkii
 Xjqian,
Shie Shie ni, danshe wo bu can zhongwen. Wo yao learn Chinese, and I am hoping that
getting an input method and a good dictionary might help. Qpzidian
was great for me, especialy since it gave pinyin along with the characters.

If I can get input working into vim, then maybe I can get wo tai tai using the Zaurus too, so I will
not get as much criticism for spending too much time on my toy.

I'll have a look at the sites through a translation site since now I know the feed and fonts exist there, so thanks.

Running Linux version 2.6.10-rc3 everything works fine.
To get the Zaurus to show up after unplugging, I just have to re-run the
start_storage.sh script

Just plugging it in makes it show up in dmesg, but it stops at
Code: [Select]
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning.
Runnig the script makes it show up again in dmesg, as if I plugged it in again,
but this time it settles.

Can't wait to try it on a lab computer and remove the card reader from my wallet!

@panyo

Is this the Yellow Dog in your sig?

I've never used it... but would be curios as to what usbview on terminal or gui says with just the cradle attached?

Maybe if you unplug the cradle after removing the Z you won't have to reboot to mount it again?

Greg
Greg2,
Now the Z mounted in my
Linux version 2.4.22-ben2 (Gentoo, my YDL machine is dormant atm).
Then when I tried to re-insert after unmounting it, I think this was the key error:
Code: [Select]
usb-storage: host_reset() requested but not implementedSubsequent attempts to re-insert gave
Code: [Select]
bash-2.05b# dmesg -c
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 10:19.0-1 address 5
hub.c: new USB device 10:19.0-1, assigned address 6
emi26_probe start<7>WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured
USB Mass Storage device found at 6
In usbview, the cradle alone does not appear, and the Z does appear when inserted
with , among others,
Code: [Select]
    Interface Number: 0
  Name: usb-storage
  Alternate Number: 0
  Class: 08(stor.)
  Sub Class: 6
  Protocol: 50
  Number of Endpoints: 2
Trying to mount (after un/replugging the cradle) gives this:
Code: [Select]
#mount /mnt/zaurus/
mount: /dev/sda is not a valid block device
and
Code: [Select]
# mount -t vfat /dev/sdb /mnt/zaurus
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
or too many mounted file systems

Building a new 2.6.9 kernel to support my ext3 volumes now, so this may be of only historical
interest after I re-boot, but here it is for completeness while I wait (and for my reference in case I develop the skills to work on this in the near future).

What is your
cat /proc/version

This didn't seem to work properly until 2.4.22 >  and later?
Have you created the zaurus directory?
Ok! That worked.
I was using 2.4.22.
I switched to kernel version 2.6.7 and could see the Z in the vendor information of dmesg. After initial failures saying no medium was found it worked. Immediately before, I had tried running the storage script twice before replacing the Z in the cradle. Then I saw the following and was able to mount and see my CF card.
Code: [Select]
ohci_hcd 0001:01:18.0: remote wakeup
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 10
scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Vendor: Sharp     Model: SL-5500           Rev: 1.00
Type:   Direct-Access                      ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0,  type 0
USB Mass Storage device found at 10
After unmounting and removing the Zaurus in an attempt to replicate my success,  it is no longer seen. But at least I have one shot per reboot, which will do for the lab computers, assuming OSX and Windows will also see the usb device.

A curious thing I have noticed in trying to read dmesg is that it is rapidly (a line or two per second) being filled with lines like these:
Code: [Select]
evbug.c: Event. Dev: adb2:2.c3/input, Type: 1, Code: 28, Value: 0
evbug.c: Event. Dev: adb2:2.c3/input, Type: 0, Code: 0, Value: 0
Only the cradle was plugged in.

Looking at dmesg also helped me figure out why my media bay drive was not working (the device letter changed from hde to hdc across kernels!)
