NYC / Looking for volunteers for Linux Project
« on: November 08, 2004, 01:45:34 pm »
Hello,
I'm looking for some specialists for a Linux project. Currently unfunded but I've been getting a very good response from the target markets. I'm mainly looking for:

1) Linux coders with hardware driver experience
2) ECE's

NDA's would be required and monies would be paid upon funding or execution of sales.

Please contact me for more info and the NDA. No this isn't a scam. =]

General Discussion / su problem
« on: July 20, 2004, 02:41:15 pm »
I think I remember coming across this once before in the forum but I couldn't find it in a search.

On my 6KL I qconsole and run "su". With the wrong password it justs denies me access. With the correct password I get the following error:

su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted

and it boots me back to the zaurus user prompt.

TIA for any help.

P.S. I'm running the native ROM that came with the unit. No modifications or anything.

BTW: mitchrl, congrats on the new Z!

Software / GPS Navigation Software

I've been looking at the GPS situation too. It appears that you have two routes (sorry, bad pun) you can take for GPS mapping:

1) QpeGPS, very good program (you can get it at http://killefiz.de/zaurus/) , it seems though that it's very difficult to get/configure maps. That assuming you can get the maps in the first place.

2) Zroadmap/ZRoadmapGPS, also at http://killefiz.de/zaurus/
ZroadmapGPS is only mildly useful, gives you the GPS sat info
Zroadmap possibly the best way to go, right now. The maps are readily available (https://www.oesf.org/commu...tml?group_id=44) and it supports flite for speaking the street names and locations.

There is no software that currenlt does routes/directions that I know of.

Map collection forum:

P.S. Remember to get gpsd running correctly before running either app.

From Doug1955:
<truncated>
1. Install gpsd. (It is in the qpegps download site)
2. Insert card in cf slot
3. cardctl resume
4. gpsd -p /dev/ttyS3 -s 4800
5. run zroadmap or qpegps

Accessories / Wireless Modem for 6KL

With the USB host capabilities you should be able to connect your 6KL to a sprint phone and use it for 1xRTT capabilities.
Problem is, I don't have a Sprint phone =] (AT&T) And anyways I'd like to keep the all-in-one aspect of the Z. As much of it "internal" as possible.

Accessories / Wireless Modem for 6KL

Finally got my Z!!!

I'd really like to get Wireless WAN access. I'd love an RxTT (128kpbs) CF, although I have heard rumors that a new tech was coming out that's much faster.

I checked out Sprint's "Sprint PCS Connection Card (CF2031) but it seems only to support 'Doze/PocketPC.  Does anyone know where I can a good wireless modem for my Z (RxTT or faster would be a plus)?

I\'d like to get my Z online via wireless modem. Is anyone doing this? If so what card (cf?) are you using and which carrier?

6000 - Tosa / Wish List
« on: June 10, 2004, 11:07:13 am »
I finally broke down and decided to get the 6KL, even though I really wanted the 6KW.  Now if I\'m gonna splurge, I\'ll splurge. Now the question is, what would be the best components (and most compatible)  to get, if you were starting from scratch (ignoring cost)?

I was thinking:
Base Unit
Expansion \"Sled\"
SD card: How big is best and which brand?
CF Memory: How big is best and which brand?
CF GPS: Which brand is best?
Extra Battery(ies): Needed?
Extra Dock: Needed?
CF Wired Ethernet: Which brand is best?
CF Bluetooth: Which brand is best?
Screen Protector:Which brand is best?
USB Cable:
USB to Serial (for Cisco consoles):
CF Camera: Which brand is best?
Multi-Reader (for Desktop System): Which brand is best?
Keyboard: Which brand is best?
Carrying Case (Actually I designed a cool one but need to patent it):             Otherwise which brand is best?
Wireless WAN Card:

Am I missing anything someone found useful?

Thanks for the help.

User soon to have a Z =]

P.S. Ok I kinda do care about the prices, the best place to buy would be a great help.

P.S.S. We should compile a list for all the best H/W and the best places to get them.

6000 - Tosa / Zaurus SL-6000 Monster Review on BargainPDA.com
« on: May 12, 2004, 01:27:14 pm »
Did anyone see the review in ummm... nuts, I forgot. In one of the linux mags they had a two page article on the Z. Funny thing was it didn\'t mention much about the unit but spoke at length about how lame Sharp\'s support of it is and how that that angered many potential buyers/developers.

On a different note, could someone please make a recommendation for a wireless keyboard?

Everyone seems to like the Pocketop IR Keyboard

I read another thread where they were discussing d/ling other fonts to use with the console. You should do a search.
