...But what I'd like to know (stealing the thread - sorry) is how easy is it to get the pickboard (which works fine in SharpROM) working in Cacko?  'Cos just occasionally it's helpful - e.g.in the dark!
Thanks,
Mark
If its the onscreen one you are talking about....I think it is enabled by default, just a short click from the keyboard icon
Yes, the Pickboard is there, but doesn't do anything in Cacko.  I suspect it's a question of not having a dictionary in the right format for it - but I don't know what format that is, nor where to put it.
Thanks,
Mark

For Sale / Wanted / Sl-c860 Small Battery Door

Does anyone know where I can get a small battery door for an 860 etc in the UK?  Conics do them, but the shipping is nearly £7 ($14) for a part that costs £4 ($8).  Not really cost-effective!
Thanks.
I'm still looking, if anyone has any ideas!  Anyone with a broken C700/750/860 perhaps?  Conics shipping has gone up since I first posted!!
Thanks,
Mark

EDIT:  Conics will after all send it ordinary airmail for much less, good for them.

So is it easier to thumb type or use a usb portable keyboard with these things? What are you guys using for text input?

As far as I'm concerned, the main point of a Zaurus is the keyboard.  Having "learnt" to thumb type on a Psion 3 (of blessed memory), the clamshell Zaurus is the only PDA I could consider.  If you're going to get a usb keyboard, I'm sure it's easier, but rather defeats the object as I see it.  But what I'd like to know (stealing the thread - sorry) is how easy is it to get the pickboard (which works fine in SharpROM) working in Cacko?  'Cos just occasionally it's helpful - e.g.in the dark!

For Sale / Wanted / C-1000 + Leather Case + Wifi Card

It's a very generous offer, and like no doubt many others, I'd willingly give it a new home (UK), but in the interests of fairness I should point out firstly that new batteries are not very costly and secondly that with a new battery, you'd get a worthwhile price on eBay!  But if you're still feeling philanthropic, and don't get any more deserving applicants (developers etc), let me know.

Software / Kde-pim/pi 2.2.9 Available For Sharp Rom
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:19:13 pm »
Thanks for that.  I love the idea of forgetting what you fixed - but all the incremental fixes are cumulatively great.  I have a hopefully simple problem - what is the easiest way to synchronise two Zauruses running KDE PIM/Pi?  I got something working before and have forgotten what I did!  I can beam a DTM file across, but can I sync, rather than transferring a file, via IR beam?  Should be the easiest way, I think.
Thanks,
Mark

New products and alternatives / Sharp Has Released Zaurus-tng !?!?
« on: April 15, 2008, 08:58:30 am »
At the risk of boring, I'd say (again) that all the technical wizardry in the world cramming bling OSs into small spaces is unimpressive compared with instant-on.  God knows how long it would take a device like that to boot Windows - and with 1Gb RAM, even unhibernating will be too irritatingly slow to use it as a PDA, like you can use a Zaurus or a Psion, or...  We still need the new generation of instant-on super-PDA to replace the Zaurus.

Hope you don't regret selling your Z like I did....

i don't think so, at least for now
but who knows, in 3 - 4 years, perhaps there will be a device between the Z and the U1010, as pocketable as the zaurus and as powerfull as the u1010......perhaps it will be a MID.....

actually screen size is an issue, if you want a pocketable device with a 1024x600 touchscreen, a hdd and a keyboard... look here for a comparison :

http://www.umpcportal.com/products/compare...6,152,184%5D%5D

there are even devices like the Aigo or the BenQ with a 4"8 1024x600! so .................

Surely the most important aspect of all in the specs is instant-on?  A pocket device with a significant boot time is just a pain.  And this rules out all current UMPCs as far as I'm concerned.  Zaurus is only option to include a decent keyboard as far as I know.
Mark

Exactly!

I concur completely!  If I were one of those research think tank fellas or OS dev guys, instanton would be the number one thing to develop ... not fancy aero skin, 3d desktop ...

Granted, instanton prob requires hw/fw/sw to work in unison.

UMPC makers, give us instanton already!

Thanks for support - even size is less important to me than instant on, and sometimes even a Psion netBook seems attractive.  Although the difference in thickness between a C860 with small battery and a 3100 makes all the difference to my pocket comfort!

6000 - Tosa / Trying To Install To 6000l

Further to previous pleas for help, I'm still struggling - I can't find a SharpROM image for 6000L, and now I can't find the tools for updating anyway.  Does anyone have them, or better still can anyone point me to them, to avoid more work for folk trying to help?  I want to reinstall a clean SharpROM and Tesu-ise it to start with, then try G-ROM ideally.
Thanks,
Mark
You should be able to find what you require at this site:Original rom for 6000L

HTH
Thanks very much - it's amazing how much is out there when you know!
Now I can try G-ROM and Tetsu in the knowledge that I can revert if there are problems.
Mark

EDIT:  Sorry to be a pain, but the .zip file doesn't have installer.sh.  It has installer.pro, which I'm unsure about.  If I follow the instructions, nothing seems to happen.  The lights come on, but that's it.  I gave up after about three hours.  It doesn't take longer than that to flash the NAND, does it?  And using the maintenance menu, it definitely won't do it without installer.sh.  I can confirm that it is a FAT16 CF card.

Thanks again,
Mark

I do have some of Guylhem's stuff downloaded, I can upload if useful?

OK, check my website downloads area in 6000 dir.. am just uploading his ROM image now.

Thanks very much.  But (and apologies for duplication, see my response to the_oak's post, if I try this and screw up, is there a SharpROM image around, now that it's gone from externe.net?
Cheers,
Mark
Conics to the rescue

http://downloads.conics.net/pda/zaurus-sl-...iginal-backups/

There is an original 6000W english NAND backup in there.  Thanks Brett for hosting these.

Thanks - and apologies for discourtesy of such a late response - but I don't think it'll work for a 6000L, will it?

I believe this next link is to the original sharp rom: (at least it is labeled "normal kernel")
http://tetsu.homelinux.org/zaurus/kernel/v...zImage-6000.bin  ???

Thanks very much.  Sadly, this link points to something only 1.1Mb in size, so not the SharpROM.  If I try the kernel, is anything likely to go wrong?  I.e. is it "safe" to do without access to a full SharpROM backup in case?

Thanks,
Mark

Speculatrix is quite right, of course--but if you can do what he is suggesting, then you can probably make Angstrom do your bidding as well.  I'd love to see a really working angstrom qtopia 4 on a 6k (though you'd be trading vid acceleration for a faster kernel performance wise)

yes, any serious effort on the 6000 would be better spent getting angstrom or debian up and running on it - search the angstrom mailing lists as there's been quite a bit of effort to make the 6000 work well.

Thanks very much adf and speculatrix - yes, I'm afraid what speculatrix is suggesting is wholly beyond me - I'm just an "ordinary intelligent person" with an OIP's computer ability, not a programmer/hacker/whatever.  I would be very happy with a Cacko-type ROM, just a bit more flexible and overclockable than SharpROM, and G-ROM release 4 looked OK.  But it's gone.  So, yes please, anything you can let me have to make my task easier and more idiot-proof would be very welcome!  Incidentally, I don't know even where to get a SharpROM image now that interne.net is down - can anyone point me in the right direction for that in case I give up and have to go back to that?  Mine as loaded is a bit buggy (battery applet disappeared, etc.).  Thanks.

Mark

Apologies if it seems as though I'm going off-thread, but this seems the most active relevant thread.  Has Guylhem's externe.net site got a temporary problem, or have we lost his ROM?  It's all 404ing at me!  I am a new 6000 owner, haing had a 3100 on Cacko for a while, and wanted to try G-ROM.  Or should I stick to Tetsu-ising Sharp?  And I can't seem to get to Tetsu's kernel either.  Can anyone help, or do I just try again in a few days?
Thanks,
Mark
