Accessories / Questions Regarding: Best SD Cards & Where to Buy
« on: October 16, 2004, 11:51:18 am »
While I'm running a badblocks scan on my 512 SD SanDisk card, I am currently looking for the best SD cards to get and where to get them at.  I believe the 512 SD SanDisk card is good, and wish to keep that for other uses.  What I'd really like to do, however, is get a SD card that is durable and can last through multiple read/writes: since I wish to use the SD as my / dir.

I've heard that Japanese made cards and Panasonic cards seem to hold up.  However, other than that, I can't find really anything to indicate where I can:

a) find a reputable online (or offline) retailer to purchase cards from (at the best price possible), and
what brand & make of card I should purchase.

If anyone could give me some direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / SL-5600: Sound Recording in OZ 3.3.5?
« on: August 22, 2004, 04:31:04 pm »
I don't know if anyone came up with a solution yet, but I was wondering if anyone figured out how to get the sound recorder on the 5600 to work under an OZ rom (particularly one of the more recent series)?  I would like to really utilize the sound recording feature, as I've found it useful to me in the past.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Strange screen rotation ...
« on: August 21, 2004, 10:03:57 pm »
It seems that OZ might have stored some variable in the RAM that made this issue occur.  I myself have had this issue on my 5600.

It can also be corrected by simply rotating the screen incrementally.  For instance, rotate it so that it is in the upside-down portrait mode, restart Opie, then repeat the process until you get the desired result.

Accessories / Question: Good Belt-Clip Case for the SL-5600?
« on: August 19, 2004, 09:27:37 pm »
Hi All,

Seeing as I am interested in freeing up some of my pocket space, I am interested in looking for a belt-attaching case that'll fit the 5600. Would anyone know of any cases that may do the trick -- I'm not all that picky in what they're made of, as so long as they are durable and serve the purpose.

Thanks All!

5x00 General discussions / flashing lights during rom install

OK, now that you got a CF card, I recommend doing the following to flash OZ on the Z.

1. Go into the Maintenance Menu (Reboot Z, then OK+Cancel), select Format.
2. After formatting, insert CF card with the three files on the root directory.
3. Flash as you would a Sharp ROM.

This worked for me.  If you have any questions, PM me or post a message.  :-)

5x00 General discussions / flashing lights during rom install
« on: March 16, 2004, 11:22:34 pm »
Given the flashing lights I\'m assuming that you followed the instructions on the OZ website... However, those instructions are for flashing the 5000D/5500 Z\'s.

The flashing instructions for the 5600 are different.  You need to follow the instructions on the Zaurus website in order to flash the items properly.  This link shall help you:

http://www.myzaurus.com/ROMupdate6.asp

Remember: zImage.bin needs to be renamed to zImage and initrd.bin-gcc3 (or whatever) needs to be renamed to initrd.bin.  It also needs to be on the root directory on the microdrive, which has to be fat16 formatted.  (Same as with a CF card.)  You\'ll also need the updater.sh file, which is located in the OZ feed on OZ\'s website.

OK, will this work on a Zaurus 5600 w/OZ 3.3.5?  If so, I\'m game for it.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Anyone have lirc-modules for OZ3.3.5?
« on: March 13, 2004, 09:59:55 am »
They\'re part of kernel-modules-2.4.6, I believe.

However, here\'s my dillema... I have the 2.4.18 embedded kernel.  Will those modules fit seamlessly into a 2.4.18 setup?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.5 + 5600 + Problems
« on: March 12, 2004, 02:02:21 pm »
Thanks elykyllek!

1. It works.  Though I wonder why this piece of code wasn\'t mentioned in any of the OZ docs or even inserted in the actual opie script...?

2. Yes, I figured this out... I was hoping there was a way to avoid this occurrence.

BTW, I\'ll try and help out by posting a HOW-TO on installling OZ on a 5600, once I get everything I need to get done, done. :-)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / OZ 3.3.5 + 5600 + Problems
« on: March 12, 2004, 10:39:25 am »
Last night I flashed my 5600 with the lastest build of OZ 3.3.5.  While most of it seems functional enough (and from what I saw, far superior to Sharp\'s default apps), two problems sprang up.

1. Whenever I did something, text (as if from a terminal) came up from the bottom from the screen.  It seemed to push the gui up, although when I went to tap on something, like an applet (in its original place), it still came up.

2. The timeclock is reading as if I was back in 31 Dec 1969.  It does seem to increment, however, because I\'m in the First of January -- 1970!

If anyone can help with these two problems, I may be on my way to a working OZ 3.3.5 on the SL-5600!

Anyone run GfZ on the 5600?  If so, what are it\'s pros and (in particular) cons?

Accessories / Cheapest CompactFlash SD cards?
« on: February 25, 2004, 10:27:01 am »
Thus far, I haven\'t really had any problems with either the SanDisk CF or SD cards, having them for about a few weeks now.  I have other SanDisk readers (one for the new sony memory stick pro and the 6-in-1 reader, the former for months now) and I have yet to encounter any problem or defect in workmanship.

Lexar is a reliable brand though (I do have their Sony Memory Stick cards) and they do make some pretty good products -- regrettably, one of their readers does not work in *nix, therefore I don\'t use it too much anymore except on the only Windoze XP machine in the house.

General Discussion / What would you do? 5500 vs. 5600
« on: February 21, 2004, 12:27:37 am »
Depends on what you want to do with your Z.  If you\'re into heavily modifying the Z, want to use OZ or another rom, then the 5500 is the way to go.  Plus there are more apps for it than the 5600 -- actually, correction:  I should say that a majority of the apps out there WILL work in the 5600, it just takes a little more work as they\'ve been primarily utilized on the 5500 platform.

What the 5600 has on the 5500, however, is the battery life and some of the built in features (mic and speaker).  It also has better hand writing recognition (though I don\'t use it much, given the wonderful thumb-board) and it can almost double as an MP3 player. Granted, the speaker is more of a curse than a feature, it\'s only use being for alarm-type purposes.

However, I will say that the mic does have it\'s uses -- particularly when important conversations arise.     And I do like the one touch feature that will activate the recording program.

User Request for Applications / Something similar to WINE?

Wouldn\'t it be easier to just create native programs for the Z instead of creating an emulator that hogs up system resources and memory?
