You need to mount the file system read/write:

(Log in as root)
mount -n -o remount,rw / (make the file system writable)

Look at the bar code label on the back of the card; the card part number is 8510-00159 and the revision letter follows that.

I don't even have a Zaurus anymore, but still like to read these forums. I was really worried that OESF had left without a good bye. So glad to have you back! Like most, I have been hoping/waiting/looking for the ultimate Zaurus successor. There have been quite a few nominees lately. Looking forward to these forums growing and adapting to the changes in portable technology, and storing the wealth of past Zaurus wisdom.

Thanks for your dedication, and keep up the good work!!

@ merlin1:

It replaced my 6000L (Tosa). I had a C1000 for a few months, and went back to my Tosa because of the larger screen size mostly. I have not missed my Tosa as much as I thought I would, I guess because I can do all it did and more with this little device.

The netbook I had (Sylvania G) was a dud from the start. It came pre-installed with a Linux distro that did not support the built-in WIFI or video acceleration. It was an Ubuntu derivative (GOS), but if I updated anything, packages broke. A succession of Distros were tried, and would lock up after a few hours. VIA's Linux support was practically non-existent.

@ TheWalt:

I considered the Netwalker too, as well as the Umid M1. I decided against the Netwalker because it is far easier to find up-to-date software for X86 processors than ARM processors. Since I do not really have programming skills, I do not have to depend on the wonderful programmers that kept our Zauruses alive so long. The Umid M1 only came with 8 GB storage. Since I had bought an Mtron 32 GB SSD (originally for the unworthy Sylvania G), I put that in the U820, and it is rather snappy. I can even watch youtubes if I select medium quality. (I can't tell the difference on a 5.6" screen anyway.)

I just bought one of these, and I have to say I am quite pleased with it. Check out Lisa Gade's review:

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/Fujitsu-U820.htm

She only gave it 3 out of 5 stars, but that was when it was over $1,000.00.  Also, it originally came with Vista, which ran kind of slow (resource hog that it is) and Service Pack 2 helped to speed it up. Many downgraded to XP Tablet, and were very happy with performance. Myself? I upgraded to Windows 7 and I am really happy with it. I hope to investigate some Linux distros as well, but haven't had time yet.

This thing is loaded with features:

1.6 Ghz Intel Atom Z530 processor
1 GB RAM (well that's a little too minimalist)
5.6" screen 1280 X 800 resolution
Intel GMA 530 video
60 GB hard drive
1.3 MegaPixel webcam
a,b,g,draftn WIFI
Bluetooth
GPS and Garmin Mobile PC Software
convertable to tablet mode
touchscreen
1 USB port
CF slot Type I and II
SD card slot
Fingerprint sensor
VGA out and Ethernet using supplied dongle
4 cell battery gets about 7 or 8 hours
Mono speaker and audio jacks

Got mine for $416.00 plus (exorbitant) shipping charge ($457.00 total) from ubid.com. You won't find a more feature packed portable for the price.

For Sale / Wanted / Sold: Zaurus Sl-6000l & Extras
« on: January 21, 2010, 06:29:41 pm »
[size=][size=]I am  putting my SL-6000L up for auction on eBay later tonight. This device  has been well cared for and is in good condition. I will probably  regret this, but I think I am ready to move on to something new.

I am the original owner, and all original packaging, and parts are included. The screen is outstanding with no dead pixels or scratches and is viewable in direct sunlight with backlight turned off. The screen is VGA, and can be rotated from portrait to landscape with the touch of a button. This was originally sold as "ruggedized" and supposedly can be dropped from 36" without breaking it. (I never had the guts to test this, although I read about a guy who dropped his off of a roof, and his screen cracked, but the Zaurus still worked otherwise.)

It has a voice recorder built in to record voice memos, and has built in WIFI, and the Opera web browser which works very well. It also has a Microsoft Office compatible Office Suite with Word processor, Spreadsheet, and Presentation software pre-installed. With the included USB adapter, and the right drivers, you can use a USB keyboard, mouse, and some external USB drives. Some external CD-Rom drives are said to work with it, although mine didn't. It has a text editor, media player, calculator, PIM apps, and an image viewer.

I have reset to a factory fresh install, and added the driver to support SD cards greater than 1 GB, and installed a console application, an improved text editor (zeditor), Sharp's camera software, IR keyboard drivers, Kismet, Quasar Media Player, and a file explorer app. I will include a 256 MB CF card with a nand backup of this setup. I also include a 256 MB CF card with the original Sharp ROM, in case you try some other ROM, and want to go back. I used this ROM to reinstall to factory state.

Also included are a 4 GB CF memory card, and a 2 GB SD memory card. On both memory cards are more apps that can be installed including software that I purchased from TKC (thekompany.com) and Masabi Software (Repton game). These programs are in the "download" folder on both cards. I will include howtos that I have gleaned since I have had this device.

I fabricated a metal and leather case that I use most of the time. It was designed to allow use of an IR keyboard with the screen rotated to landscape. It is homemade, but has been very useful to me. (You cannot use the CF camera with my case, as the case does not allow the camera to go down into the slot far enough.) The "Kickstand" snaps onto the case, and has Velcro on the back to use the external battery case along with keyboard and adds a couple hours of run time without A/C power.

A nice review of the SL-6000L can be read at:

I had some issues with batteries. It would say that the "backup battery was extremely low", yet it worked fine, and kept time. Changing the battery seemed to fix this. Also, after reading in a Dell Axim forum to let the battery charge for 24 hours instead of 2 or 3 hours, I haven't had the "backup battery low" warning again from either battery.

Hardware Mods / 6000 Backup Battery Whining & Complaining
« on: January 21, 2010, 03:45:05 pm »
I thought I might mention that I read something on a Dell Axim forum about charging the Axim for 24 hours straight to bring back "dead" backup batteries when an Axim was left in a drawer too long. Just charging for a few hours until the Green light came on did not help. But charging for 24 hours "resurrected" dead backup batteries.

So I did this with my Zaurus (a couple weeks ago) and now both batteries work fine with no further "backup battery is extremely low" warnings.

Hope this helps someone who has this problem.

For Sale / Wanted / Sold: Sylvania G Netbook
« on: January 17, 2010, 08:42:23 pm »
I'm selling the Netbook that I wrote about in this thread:

https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showto...st&p=178958

It is a nice piece of hardware, but will never properly support Linux, even though it was sold with Linux pre-installed. It runs Windows XP flawlessly, but I really bought it to be a mini Linux box. I am also selling the metal base that I made which added a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive, and CF card reader. I also throw in a legal copy of Windows XP Home Edition. And last but not least, an external USB WIFI adapter. (The internal WIFI never worked great, and finally stopped working at all.)

I hope to raise enough cash to buy a Zaurus replacement. Maybe Netwalker?

My spare battery was bought 2 or 3 years ago, after reading a post on one of the oesf forums. I can't remember which post, or even which forum. Conics had some, but I don't think they do anymore. I found a "refurbished" one listed here:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=...IwAg#ps-sellers

but there is not enough information on that page to tell if the seller actually has the know how and resources to "refurbish", or if they just wiped the dirt off of a battery and called it "refurbished".

There are battery rebuilding services such as this one:

http://www.microbattery.com/custom-battery-packs.htm That may be able to actually refurbish (or rebuild) our 6000 batteries.

OK. Enough badgering by you curious folks! The backup battery was fixed by replacing the external battery. It seems that it developed a problem that it would not pass a charge to the internal backup battery. After changing the external battery, all is well!

I wish I lived in Europe. Depending on your carrier, here in the good old USA, data plans are more like $45 to $119.99 per month, depending on limits.

Not sure why I directed that question only at Archi, except that's the name I saw last, I suppose.

If it's not a Z, then it seems odd to put the "Z" in the model name, don't you think? After all, we all wanted another Z!
