With my meter stick measurements, the numbers for the Toshiba screen are accurate for the SL-6000, too...

Software / Updated qpeGPS
« on: April 11, 2004, 08:52:33 pm »
The original qpeGPS was designed for the map scale of web sites like MapBlast and Vicinity.  Since sites that use this scaling have either disappeared or made it nearly impossible to produce maps using latitude and longitude, we qpeGPS users must find sites wherever we can. When a site is found, it probably will have its own scaling factor.

I\'ve made a change to qpeGPS that allows for the entry of a ratio of the two scales in the map download configuration file.  The  scale with which most qpeGPS users are familiar can be used on the \"download\" screen, therefore allowing the download of a map directly into qpeGPS.  This eliminates the need for external code to download and convert a map.

This code makes the existing configuration file incompatible with previous versions or the code, however...

If anyone is interested, it can be found on my SL-5600 patches page: here

General Discussion / libdb.so.2?!?!
« on: April 07, 2004, 07:09:17 pm »
Let\'s look at this a different way:

Why is it that you can\'t use the Apache servers from the coup.net site, again?  I installed the apache-1.3.27-php-4.2.3_0.1_arm.ipk on my SL-5600 and it came up the first time I tried it. It\'s statically linked and shouldn\'t need anything special, library-wise.  A couple of the scripts need Perl, though...

I have to say that something happened to the file either when you downloaded it from my web site or when you transferred it to your Zaurus.  The file is fine, as far as I can tell.  From my Internet server command line:

Code: [Select]
bash$ file libdb2_2.7.7_arm.ipk

libdb2_2.7.7_arm.ipk: gzip compressed data, deflated, last modified: Tue Apr  6 01:56:41 2004, max compression, os: Unix

bash$ zcat libdb2_2.7.7_arm.ipk | tar tvf -

-rw-r--r-- root/root         4 2004-04-06 01:43:43 ./debian-binary

-rw-r--r-- root/root    134707 2004-04-06 01:56:32 ./data.tar.gz

-rw-r--r-- root/root       388 2004-04-06 01:47:37 ./control.tar.gz

It seems fine on the server and the same file installs on my SL-5600...

I had found the libdb3 and libdb4 ARM compiled libraries and I thought about suggesting you create a link to one of them, but I figured it wouldn\'t work.

I\'ve compiled the libdb 2.7.7 library (shared library only) for the ARM architecture, but I haven\'t tested it with anything.  Let me know if it works and I\'ll consider placing it on my Zaurus web page, somewhere.  You can get the ipk here.

6000 - Tosa / Headphones
« on: April 05, 2004, 11:38:00 pm »
I just thought I\'d add that my cellphone microphone/ear-piece thingy *seems* to work on the SL-6000, with the voice recorder.

VoIP anyone?

6000 - Tosa / Headphones
« on: April 04, 2004, 09:07:28 pm »
No \"uh, oh\" is warranted.  The SL-6000 is stereo.  It sounds quite good.

I have a set of 2.5 mm plug headphones and a set of 3.5 mm plug headphones.  The 2.5 mm set works as it should (separate channels are obvious on some of my MP3s) and the 3.5 mm works just as well, with a 3.5 to 2.5 mm adapter...

You could check out this site: http://www.choup.net

I couldn\'t get the download links to work, but I found the direct download directories here.

There is no dblib available for download, but the packages I downloaded all seem to be statically linked.  You still need perl, as I\'m sure you\'re already aware...

6000 - Tosa / I guess I\'m the first on ZUG to have a SL-6000L
« on: April 04, 2004, 02:22:41 pm »
I\'ve been running some tests on my SL-6000 and one of them was to see just how many columns and rows (with a readable font) could be displayed:

Portrait (7 point fixed font): 88 cols by 74 rows
Portrait (12 point fixed font): 73 cols by 39 rows

Landscape (7 point fixed font): 120 cols by 51 rows
Landscape (12 point fixed  font): 100 cols by 27 rows

I have pretty good eye-site, so some people might not be able to see the 7 point font. The screen on the SL-6000 is *superb*, so it\'s crystal clear if your eyes can handle it...

I use Qkonsole and these tests *included* the menu, command pull-down, scrollbar and QT menu bar.  If I go fullscreen without the scrollbar in place, these numbers increase a bit.

Qt/Qtopia / Where can I find QTopia SDK which supprots XScale CPU?
« on: April 04, 2004, 01:23:47 pm »
lardman\'s question about whether you really need the Xscale optimizations is a valid question that any developer should consider.  It depends on what you are attempting to do with your software.

I\'ve had a comparison between GCC optimizations on my zaurus web page for quite some time.  I added another page last night which compares the SL-5600 standard and overclocked kernels with the SL-6000.  The comparisons use nBench and can be found here.  You should look at the nbench-armv4, nbench-armv5te, nbench-cpu-xscale and nbench-tune-xscale tables.  The results vary, but xscale opimizations usually are the best.

I guess I should mention on my web page that my SL-5600 has the PXA-250, since there are some SL-5600s with the PXA-255.

6000 - Tosa / Got my 6000L from Amazon - Some impressions
« on: April 04, 2004, 01:24:43 am »
I plunged into the world of the SL-6000, but I\'ve decided to keep my SL-5600, for development and tests.

While I was using the 6000 I thought it seemed a bit faster than my 5600, which is running the overclocked (to 470 Mhz) kernel.  I decided to run the same benchmarks on the 6000 that I\'d run on the standard and overclocked kernels for the 5600, the results of which are on my Zaurus page.  I\'ve put together a separate page comparing the results here.

You SL-6000 owners will find the results to be quite embarrassing... uh... interesting, I mean.

Over all, I love the machine.  Its screen is incredibly bright and unbelievably clear.  I\'ve tested a few programs, with mixed results, but all have run with results ranging from little annoyances to no problems at all.  Qpegps *works*, but has a few visual problems on the non-map screens.  The mapping screen looks awesome at 480x640!

I have *crashed* Opera on web pages that don\'t crash on the SL-5600 runnning Opera 7.  There are some pages, which do work on the SL-6000, which don\'t work with the SL-5600 running Opera 7, however.

As has been reported elsewhere, IRK seems to work fine on the 6000, but I\'d just like to add that the Pocketop keyboard and the 6000 look like they were designed with each other in mind.  They look fantastic together!

6000 - Tosa / Release is 1 week away?
« on: March 12, 2004, 07:45:32 pm »
I just heard from the vendor again and this was the comment:

Quote
We will carry the 6000N, and possibly the L. I do not believe that the
6000W will be offered at the same time as the others.

When I questioned this, I received:

Quote
Doh! I meant we will carry the L (with 802.11b), and possibly the N. Sorry.

So, it seems that the SL-6000W will not be offered when the other two models are released.    Since I didn\'t get an answer to which one costs what and they are only planning to carry the SL-6000L, I can assume that they will be charging $699 for that model...

6000 - Tosa / Release is 1 week away?
« on: March 11, 2004, 11:44:24 pm »
I heard from the vendor I mentioned earlier:  The SL-6000 will be available in about 2 weeks from today.  This isn\'t really news, but I was told they\'ll try to put up a pre-order page within the next two business days.

I was also told that the cost will be $699.  I don\'t know for which model.  It wasn\'t mentioned, but I\'ve asked.

Here\'s hoping that\'s the SL-6000W price...

General Discussion / Lirc on sl5600
« on: March 07, 2004, 03:11:58 am »
You can get to my Zaurus web page by clicking \"Profile\" on one of my posts.  My web page is listed there...

Edit:
P.S.  I\'ve update the page to include the LIRC package.
*sigh*  You can also just click the \"WWW\" on one of my posts.

General Discussion / Lirc on sl5600
« on: March 06, 2004, 06:41:50 pm »
I put together an LIRC package for the SL-5600, but I\'ve never tested it.  The lirc_sir module should be compiled properly for the SL-5600 with ROM v 1.32.  It isn\'t on my SL-5600 \"patches\" page, but you can use the following link to get to it:

lirc-sl5600_0.6.6_arm.ipk

If it works for you, please comment here and I\'ll add it to my page, which is in dire need of an update, anyway...
