General Discussion / Pepperpad Plus
« on: June 07, 2006, 11:30:35 pm »
I'm looking for a non-microsoft solution.  Here's the configuration I'm planning:
--- Pepper pad 3 (2.2 lbs, AMD processor, lots of connectivity, fedora core 4, touch screen, keyboard)
--- zaurus (5500, have it already)
--- Nokia 6103 phone (EDGE, FM radio, WAP browser & calendar/PIM synchronization)
--- iPOD nano ($150, contacts/PIM, music).
Everything but the iPOD can link with bluetooth and the the iPOD & zaurus can use USB to synch.  The idea of music on a cell phone is a passing fad.  The new hotness will be the bluetooth iPod nano with multi-pairing bluetooth headset.  The multi-pairing headset is out, but, the iPod doesn't have built-in bluetooth.  The Nokia 770 is nice but too small for a laptop replacement.  I just can't see getting things done on a teeny-tiny-tablet (T3).

As for cost, the phone is free with cell contract; plus pepper pad 3 ($700 or less), plus iPOD ($150).  The minimum is $850, which is the price of a notebook but with much more specialized hardware.

Originally, I was including getting a new zaurus (C3x00).  I was just examining the list and realized that the original mission of the zaurus was to provide a portable computer that you can carry everywhere.  But I never did carry it everywhere.  I carried my Z in a bag.  The iPOD and cell phone will go everywhere with me and the pepper pad will fit in the same bag I've been carrying the zaurus in.  I really like the PDA-sized devices, but, I guess they may really be dead because I can carry my info on the phone & iPod.  I may get a new Z anyway.

I am not sure how successful it will be given that the 1st gen UMPC devices are only about $300 more and the Nokia 770 and zaurus's which are pocketable are about $150-$300 less.
For a price point of $500, I might try it. For $699, I would get a laptop, stretch for a UMPC, or stay content with the Z until something better comes out.

agreed. I am wondering when the new Nokia 770 will be out which in theory has a thumboard or something - not seen any pics left.

the flybook would be a great if slightly oversized handheld if only it wasn't so expensive! The Lifebook P7120 (or Loox T70R or T70S) is really fabulous with its hi-res display but is too big to be a handheld. The Sharp Muramasa CV50 is smaller than the flybook but even more expensive yet lacks the communication adaptors.

hmm, if only I could afford all of them to try them out and see which I liked the most!

See  Mobile Tech Review for Pepperpad+ sighting: $500 MSRP, AMD processor, etc....

Also see the carrypad journal comments on the design.  Carrypad Journal is a blog, so, I can't directly link.  Second article down at this time.

General Discussion / Who are you and where are you from?
« on: February 23, 2005, 08:11:28 pm »
Check the member name for location, USA of course.

I started life in pdp land, graduated to the Plato project (Cyber 760, I think),  considereed owning a VAX at one point, own various Macs, PCs, SGIs,... oh yeah, and a zaurus 5500.  These days, I try to stick with perl/Tk, although I could be convinced to work with something like Qt.  I will hopefully be returning to grad school to get a PhD in neuroscience.

In the mean time, I'm learning to love the dim side (M$) and windows CE.  Actually, I think how nice embedded linux would run on everything.  We shall see.  It's only a matter of time before some vendor "gets" PDAs + linux + upgrade path.  Too bad it's not going to be apple or sharp.

I came up with a really cool idea for rapid multi-character recognition across latin & non-latin character sets.  But, I could never implement it because I couldn't find which library/routines/whatever on my zaurus provide this service.  Anyone want to volunteer that special knowledge?

General Discussion / Trivia Hunt : Why Is It Called A Zaurus

Yep, it means horrible lizard.

Terrible, not horrible, silly
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=68060\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Saurus is a Latin word (by definition, it uses latin characters).  According to the Oxford Latin Dictionary, saurus means a fish, in particular the horse-mackerel.

What you may be looking for is "saura" (\sigma\alpha\upsilon\rho\alpha), which is a Latinized Greek word meaning a type of lizard or salamander.  Neither terrible nor horrible is implied in the original word.

General Discussion / Who Uses Ruby?

So it is just the two of us then? How disappointing!  I was hoping there were a few more of us Ruby learners/users
I'm about to start on a project using Ruby on Rails as a backend. Don't know a thing about Ruby yet (which is why i took the project in the first place).
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=68102\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Ruby looks great for object oriented stuff.  I have a serious hankering to learn it.... unfortunately, it comes out nearly dead last in execution speed when compared to things like python & perl.  I hear that the parrot engine (which is the underlying engine for perl 6)  is going to get a ruby front end.  In that case, all languages which have a parrot front end interface (they might be calling it a language module or some such techospeak) will have the same execution speed.    I've seen a number of perl types praising ruby.  If you've written perl with objects, you'd know why.

I checked on ruby under parrot recently, and, the project doesn't appear to be  making progress.  I guess the parrot internals are still their focus.

General Discussion / Will The New Clio Nxt Run Zaurus Software

...so the specifications don't concern me, it's the looks of it. Not to say I wouldn't prefer something more powerful, but for me, that isn't the primary focus.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=66473\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The NXT looks to me like a nice combination of tablet entry, screen resolution (for pdf reading), and long battery life (I'm guessing 8-10 hours).  I was even thinking this would make a nice add-on for my zaurus.    The athlon tablets I was looking at were $1400+, and, price matters to me .  The ability to run some of the apps that the zaurus enjoys, instead of getting nickeled-and-dimed to death for inferior software, would really add value too.

I'm still waiting to hear how vaporous this product is.   I suppose if it catches on, OE will get a port.

General Discussion / Will The New Clio Nxt Run Zaurus Software
« on: February 09, 2005, 11:42:58 pm »
The new clio NXT (due in April if not vaporware) is an Intel PXA255 400MHz machine w/ 800x600 graphics & touch screen.  Not sure the screen is as nice as the Zaurus 6000, but, it will enjoy better support.

Anyone want to hazard a guess whether the zaurus library can be made to run on it.

See http://www.dataevolution.com/productsClioNxt.php for details.

Software / ipkg & add/remove software not recognizing all .ipk file
« on: February 27, 2004, 11:52:58 pm »
I have an SL-5500 with Sharp 3.10 ROM.

Software installation is currently selectively broken.

I downloaded various versions of the IRK package & put them on my CF card.  When I try to install them, none of the IRK\'s appear on the list of available packges, while plenty of other packages show up.  When I try to install from the command line, I get the error

mkdir: Cannot create directory `//home/tmp/ipkg/irk-sl5600\': Permission denied

The output of ipkg then suggests that I run \"ipkg update\" which then attempts to connect to http://www.gnurou.org/, which is a site definitely not associated with Sharp.

What the heck is going on?  Has some package from gnurou.org replaced my ipkg app?  This particular version of ipkg seems to be somewhat incompetent, if it is trying to create a directory with two prepended slashes.

Now here\'s the interesting thing... I had already installed and then uninstalled one of the IRK packages.  I think my ipkg has been replaced or damaged somehow.

Any insight will be appreciated.
