okay .. thats great, i'll give it a try .. one thing though, if openzaurus is alive, how come the openzaurus.com domain isn't working?  glad to see OZ is alive, but i don't get that impression from the web presence much any more .. or am i just going to the wrong place?

5x00 General discussions / Most "alive" Rom/image For The Sl5500 Right Now?
« on: February 16, 2006, 06:10:44 pm »
hi all .. i recently dug my sl5500 out of the closet and booted it up to find that the old OpenZaurus 3.1 setup i had on it wasn't gonna work without the pilfered SD card that used to be in it no more, so .. i'm looking for suggestions about what to boot on this happy little sl5500 now?  i'd like to put it to use for interesting things .. okay, so its gotten a lot less attention since i got a few GP2X's around, but .. along those lines .. whats a good distro for the sl5500 right now?

anything with emu pkg's easy to install?

i've got a WLAN card for it too (old Sony Clie one) and it works, and i could put a 256 SD card in it .. any particular suggestions about how to set it up these days for 'easy/general use'?  64/0, /home on SD?  is cacko the only decent image for doing this ...

That being said, what were you really expecting? In my book, revamping the memory management for nearly unlimited user storage, server management, automated downloading of news doc for the day all look like -amazing- things to me.

well, true enough, it is bloody nice having what i would've considered a very nice workstation, in the 80's, now in my pocket.

what i really mean by 'pimp', however, is .. those extra 'neat' flourishes that just edge things over a bit.  not just 'distro-X, just built', but 'distro-X, PIMPED'.

PIIIIMPPED, i mean.  not scientific fact and technologically wonderous prowess.  PIIIIIIIMMPPP!!!!

so far, these are all interesting systems, but i see nothing really 'pimp' about them.  i was hoping to discover there were sl5500 hackers out there making their systems do -amazing- things, but i guess its just a normal little linux box, after all, doing all the normal little linux things that linux can do.

so, c'mon folks, show up the PIMP!!!

For Sale / Wanted / WANTED in Europe: SL6000W
« on: September 29, 2004, 06:20:27 am »
Hi All,

I'm in the market for an SL6000, having had an SL5500 for a few months.  If anyone has one for sale, or knows where to get one, please contact me privately; I'm very keen on getting another Zaurus, so please consider this a plea for the best price on an SL6000.

(I'd prefer the "W" version - with built-in WLAN and Bluetooth - but will take the L version [only WLAN] if thats all thats available..)

I've had my sl5500 for a few months now, and am really enjoying the overall hackability of this nice little personal portable computer ..

Though I have to admit, the ROM-selection scene means that I'm always fiddling with 'new ROMs' and not really settling on a stable, operational config for my needs.  I guess I'm getting more out of hacking my sl5500 than I am just using it.

So I was wondering .. who has the PIMP'est sl5500 setup?  I mean, what apps have you got, whats the slickest bit about your config, how stable is it, what do you use it for?

Anyone got any creative screenshots they want to share, something drool-inducing and green-tinge making?  Done some private porting work that turns your sl5500 into the veritable "back door key" for hacking?

Lets see some screenshots, people!  C'mon, all you PIMP sl5500 users!  I wanna see the most-loaded sl5500 setups, I wanna drool at other peoples configs, I want screenshots that make me beg for a tarball!

(I don't have any screenshots .. like I said, I'm always futzing around hacking my sl5500 with new ROM's and stuff, I never seem able to settle on a standard, stable config .. I've got an sl5500 with WLAN card, 512meg SD card, and 256Meg CF card, but I'll be damned if I can get it all working right..)

Software / Quest for a Better Boot-Loader
« on: July 06, 2004, 07:45:49 pm »
yes, i'm familiar with what a bootloader is.  i just don't get why it is a requirement that you have to use the built-in FLASH programmer to flash your own kernel image into the bootable system FLASH RAM from CF?

if it were possible to flash the RAM from a userspace app on a running linux kernel, thus replacing the bootable system image, then we could far better automate the process of replacing linux kernels/initrd images in the base zaurus hardware.

Why does it need a bootloader in the first place, if the flashable RAM is available and can be written to from normal kernel space?  Is there simply no way to flash the RAM from the kernel, i.e. some sorta Sharp'ism on access to onboard Flash RAM?

feel free to indicate which tree i'm not wrongly barking up, I'm new to the zaurus scene ... it just seems to me that with a flash program that can be run in kernel space, we eliminate the need for the C-D trick as the only means of replacing kernel images.  that'd be nice, wouldn't it?

why is JTAG required?

don't we just need a FLASH programmer (app) and a zImage/initrd '/boot_dir' setup that fires up a script in linux-single mode, does the menu/flash thing, and reboots?

I mean, can we not administer, completely, the boot and FLASH ram, from a running linux kernel already?  Wouldn't it be lovely if it were just a matter of /dev/nvram support ...

Its gotta be possible to build a better loadin that'll let me choose a zImage from CF, no?

Anyone know whats out there that we might use to solve this horrid image-update scene on the sl5500 front?

For Sale / Wanted / Best deal for C860 (3 of them...)?
« on: June 09, 2004, 06:39:21 am »
Hi,

My company is considering making a bulk purchase of 3 C860\'s for the engineering group to replace their aging Psion\'s ... we\'re in Germany.

Where is the best place to get these in Europe, and does anyone know if there is a way to get a discount if we buy 3 of them at once?

Thanks for any advice you have on this ...

General Discussion / what feed?
« on: March 18, 2004, 05:42:31 am »
its total chaos in zaurus land.  so many confusing options.  a landscape of possibilities and potential.

but *SO MANY* conflicts.  this is bad.  as a community, we really have set a pretty poor example for how to maintain a stable platform.

CED\'s instructions don\'t seem to cover the sl5500 ... has anyone got a complete kernel config for the sl5500 they want to share?  i\'d really like to try compiling a kernel for my 5500, but all i\'ve got is an OSX machine and the Embedix cross-compiler ... ?(

Software / Zaurus Model #?\'s B500 == SL5600, SL5500 == ?
« on: March 16, 2004, 03:00:47 pm »
okay ... i don\'t know why the hell i thought Ced\'s Special Kernel docs were giving me what I needed to take care of the 5500, but I guess I\'ll go look for a complete 5500 build kit elsewhere ...
