Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Zaurus Never Die
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:34:44 am »
After 3 months on the Netwalker, I'm giving it up and I'm returning to the old Zaurus.

The two major reasons are that the Netwalker has a very bad keyboard (compared to the very good Zaurus one), and that the Netwalker standy autonomy is pretty ridiculous : about 5 days (and obviously less if you use the Netwalker !). By comparison, the Zaurus standby autonomy was more that a month.

Short standby autonomy can be considered as "normal" for cell phone, since the phone must power its antenna even when being in standby. But for a mobile computer ? Even my 4-year-old basic cell phone still has more than 10 days of standby autonomy !

In addition, the Netwalker is bigger and heavier. Although it has no mobile parts, it is noisy and emits a little "bzzz", even in standby. It has an inaccurate touchscreen, with unreliable double clicks. It uses specific power connector, and thus I was unable to connect it to my solar panel.

FInally, the software procided by Sharp are not optimized, in term of user interface, but also of optimization. All graphical operation (excepted video) are performed in software mode, since no driver are provided. Consequently, the Netwalker seems as slow as the Zaurus. For instance, the calendar program provided on the Netwalker (Mozilla Sunbird) is incredibly slow, MUCH slower than the Zaurus calendar.

Conclusion : the Netwalker is good for video and surfing (without typing), but the Zaurus is still better for everything else : taking notes, playing games, coding, agenda and addressbook... But I don't like video, and I not so dependent to Internet that I cannot wait until being at home for that. So the choice is easy !

Good luck for people that are still enduring the Netwalker.

I also have a Netwalker, since a few weeks. I've already have a few hacking session with it.

Things that I have managed to do :

 * rebuild the kernel (http://laterrevuedailleurs.fdn.org/en/informatique/zaurus/message_how_to_update_and_flash_the_kernel_on_the_netwalker__sharp_pc_z1_/index.html NB put the URL on a single line !)

 * enable wake-up on RTC, in order to use the Netwalker as a PDA (http://laterrevuedailleurs.fdn.org/fr/informatique/zaurus/message_wake_up_on_rtc_alarm_for_the_netwalker/index.html and http://laterrevuedailleurs.fdn.org/fr/info...ts_/index.html)

 * use an USB-to-DVI / USB-to-VGA converter with the Netwalker. I used a DisplayLink based converter, but older converter using usbsisvga have been reported to work too. Information for using DisplayLink device on Linux can be found here : http://libdlo.freedesktop.org/wiki/FrontPage . They are not specific to the Netwalker, but works well on the Netwalker.

Things that are still problematic :
 * the Netwalker does not suspend after a period of inactivity when the lid is closed (e.g. after a wake up on RTC).
 * Sunbird calendar is INCREDIBLY slow.
 * I tried to install newer Ubuntu Karmic (ARM version) from a USB key, but without success.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker / Sharp Netwalker Pc-z1, Who Has One?

Here is the last step for using the Netwalker as a PDA : a set of scripts for setting the RTC alarm automatically from Sunbird's calendar :

I use this "PDA" since about 10 days and it works well :-)

Hello, I have a Netwalker too and I've got a happy hacking session with it.

First, I've managed to recompile the kernel and flash the new kernel in the internal booting memory; you can find detailed explanations here :

http://laterrevuedailleurs.fdn.org/en/info..._z1_/index.html

I plan to used the Netwalker as a PDA, for reminding me my meetings and courses. However, it does not support wake up on RTC alarm by default, so the device can raise an alarm only when it is on... pretty useless for a PDA !

However, I've managed to make the RTC alarm usable as a wake up resource by hacking the Linux kernel sources; more informations and patch here :

http://laterrevuedailleurs.fdn.org/fr/info...lker/index.html

I'm now looking at the Sunbird calendar, in order to make it use RTC alarms.

This forum is probably not the ideal one for my post, but is there a Netwalker-specific forum somewhere ? Please forgive me if it is not the right place :-)

Accessories / [test] Solio Solar Charger With Zaurus Cxx00
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:15:33 pm »
Hello,

I've just bought a Solio Classic solar charger (http://www.solio.com/charger/explore-solio/what-is-solio.html). After charging the Solio battery via USB, I've successfully used the PSP charging tip (sold separately) to charge my Zaurus C1000.

I'm now testing the use of the solar panel. According to charger and Zaurus specifications, 1 hour of full sun should give roughly 1 hour of Zaurus battery, which would be very nice :-)

The very first results are encouraging but need to be confirmed ; I'll probably be able to give more information on that in a few days !

Sharp ROMs / Disable Rotation (c3100)
« on: July 15, 2008, 06:56:07 pm »
I also want to disable screen rotation, because I use the Zaurus in tablet mode only for viewing photo.

Here is the solution I found : edit all .desktop files in /opt/Qtopia/apps/*/ and replace :

Display=640x480/144dpi,480x640/144dpi

By :

Display=640x480/144dpi

This will forbid screen rotation for all these applications (you need to restart QTopia before it is taken into account).

Sharp ROMs / Fast Kernel Packages.

I use an optimized kernel that comes from this website :

http://www.katastrophos.net/zaurus/kernels/

It is not Tetsu kernel, but integrates many of Tetsu's patch, along with others.

I agree that the design is weird : the case is too massive, and the keyboard and joypad mix is surprising... But actually it is more surprising than really ugly.

The keyboard is put at the bottom of the device, and therefore it will probably be difficult to use it intensively without putting the device on a table, however, when put on a table, it should not be a problem -- in particular if the keyboard has the same quality as the zaurus one.

Latest images (http://openpandora.org/pandoranewkeys.png) show that there is space added between the keys -- good point !

My conclusion : I think it worth at least a try...

Sharp ROMs / Cackophonie !

Quote from: tovarish
are you using the older gcc 2.95 or a newer gcc compiler.
i would suggest using a newer compiler since compiling many apps will be easier

I use both, depending of the apps. Typically : Qt-based apps need to be compiled with 2.95, since it seems that GCC 3.x C++ binaries are not compatible with GCC 2.95 ones. Other apps are compiled with 3.x, until it fails for an unknown reason.

Sharp ROMs / Cackophonie !
« on: February 03, 2008, 05:58:18 pm »
Hi all,

Cacko is one of the most polished Zaurus ROM, however is seems that it is not actively developed or updated. Therefore, I've started to gather and compile some fresh packages for Cacko, in a feed called "Cackophonie".

It contains freshly compiled IPKG (Python 2.5.1, PyQt, Lyx 1.4.5.1, Ghostscript, ImageMagic, RSVG,...), some recent third-party packages (ZEditor, Visiscript, ZBEDic, PetitePeinture, Quasar, ZUC,... in more recent versions that in Cacko official feed).

In addition, CFXGAmirror was crashing on C1000 (it seems that framebuffer is bugged) ; i've fixed it and thus Cackophonie includes a CFXGAmirror that runs well on C1000 (and probably C3x00 too). I've also compiled a Pretec Compactpresenter kernel module for 2.4.20 kernel.

Finally, it also includes French translations for some Cacko software.

Obviously, any help is welcome!

Here is a page with a little more info :

And the feed is there :

Enjoy,
Jiba

Sharp ROMs / How To Translate Cacko / Shapr Rom Applications ?
« on: January 27, 2008, 06:46:05 am »
Oh, I see !

As I was not finding translation file, I was thinking the translation was hardcoded in the binary files.

Using .qm files, I've already successfully translated the system time dialog box.

The translation keys are actually the English translation. For finding them, I looked at the binary executable file (with khexedit) and at Qtopia 1.6 free sources (not the same version than the zaurus, but it has probably not changed a lot). I take the .ts file from Qtopia 1.6 and translate it, and then generate a .qm file with "lrelease" and put it into /opt/Qtopia/i18n/fr/systemtime.qm . And it works !

Thank you !

Sharp ROMs / How To Translate Cacko / Shapr Rom Applications ?
« on: January 26, 2008, 07:18:31 am »
Hello,

I would like to translate some of the Cacko / Sharp ROM applications in French (the ones I use the most, like PIM apps). Of course I don't expect an automatic translation; but I'm ready to translate them by hand. I've already manage to change the locale on the Zaurus, and to translate desktop icons, but not the application yet.

Does someone know how the original Japanese -> English translation was performed ?

I'm interested by any information on that subject. Thank you !

Python / Python 2.5.1 And Pyqt For Cacko
« on: January 26, 2008, 07:04:39 am »
Hello,

I've compiled the latest Python 2.5.1 for Cacko, as well as PyQT (bound to Cacko's QTopia).

IPKG are available here :

http://feed.zaurusfr.org/cackophonie/feed/

Enjoy !
