Zaurus - pdaXrom / Dual Booting pdaX from SD

I would really appreciate it if someone could just tell me without having to read until my eyes hurt, what files do I download (links please) and how (in simple idiot-proof steps) to set this up, I've been trying for hours and I'm totally confused.  I've got two files and no idea what to do with them and no idea what size card I need.

I want to dual boot pdaXrom (1.0.5) from Cacko QT ROM 1.21b on a C860

thanks!
-Francis
Padish,

I have only tested the following files (http://zaurus.hostnic.us/pdaXrom-SD%20dual%20boot/Dual_C760.zip and http://zaurus.hostnic.us/pdaXrom-SD%20dual...pdaX-SD.tar.gz) The pdaX is only 1.0.0 but should there is a rom tarball of 1.0.5 here. If I get time before the new version of pdaX comes out I'll try it out and report back, but the process should be exactly the same.

Here is a copy of what is in the ReadMe.txt in the Dual_C760.zip file.

1. Download pdaXrom tarball from http://zaurus.hostnic.us (Special thanks to Corey Costadura for supplying storage space)
2. remount / read-write (mount -o rw,remount /
3. mkdir /sbin/sys
4. cp /sbin/telinit /sbin/sys/init - this is necessary as telinit doesn't like being called from /sbin/sys/init and gave errors
5. cp init script to /sbin
6. chmod +x /sbin/init
7. Copy pivot_root to /sbin
8. untar pdaX tarball to ext2 formatted card (tar xzpvf pdax-SD.tar.gz) NOTE: you need a version of tar that understands the "p" flag to preserve permissions. I use gtar on the zaurus rather than busybox tar.
9. reboot, while the SD card is in you should boot to pdaX, remove the card and boot into normal rom.

The main things to remember is that the perms from the tarball need to be kept - I suggest untarring to your SD card from a desktop linux system via a card reader or via USB-storage - it's faster and you can use the "p" flag which the Z busybox tar doesn't have. If you really want to do everything on the Z then use the gtar ipk in the Dual_C760.zip - it is a full tar.

The biggest problem I had was that the pdaX fbvnc was not compatible with the normal qtopia kernel so I switched it for the fbvnc from the x11zaurus - worked fine except for a calibration problem where the calibration is of in greater amounts as you move across the screen - on the right side of the screen it is off by about 5 pixels - not great but you can still use it.

Let me know if you require further explanation on any of these steps and if I get the chance I'll try out the 1.0.5 tarball and report back

General Discussion / mobile device and japanese dictionary
« on: August 09, 2004, 11:14:24 pm »
Hi all,

I have a C860 in hand, and I find that the E/J dictionary in original OS is quite good. And now I used to sync it with my Palm desktop using the software in the bundled CDROM.

Actually, I bought C860 because I want a small device for troubleshoot any computer problem of my customer. I may connect to my client site remotely using VNC, Remote Desktop Top.. etc. I find cacko ROM is the one for me but I wonder if I can also bring the E/J dictionary, and the TODO, Address book, Memo, Agendus from the original OS to the Cacko ROM. And will the Sync from PC-USB-Z be still working?

I have too much concern so I don't dare to totally move to Cacko yet.

I find some member in this group have C860 with dual OS boot, I would like to know how to achieve it? By the way, the major question is whether the cacko can live with those software I love in original OS.

Thanks for answerer me in advance.

If you\'re careful, you could try erasing the flash using Linux.  It could be a little complicated unless you\'re a Linux guru, but the basic idea would be to boot from the special ROM Linux (or alternately setup a ramdisk setup with the essential utilities), unmount all the flash filesystems, and run the flash_erase utility, which you can get in the mtdtools package I uploaded here recently.  Then go back and restore the flash.

p.s.  I make no guarentees this is really a good idea.  :)

Dear DrWowe,

GREAT!!! you guide me to explore another world of zaurus. I have searched in-depth working detail of zaurus for long. But I can\'t find any.

By the word mtdtools, I find this.

Thanks a lot.

Actually, I am a so-called system engineer in linux/bsd field. But I don\'t know the working of zaurus at all.

Thanks a again.

You might consider trying to erase flash, and then run the bad blocks test again.  Other than that, yeah, I\'d say you should send it in.  I\'m no expert on the subject though.

Thanks for your advise. I think no one want to be the expert of this subject!!!!

By the way, could you tell me how to erase the flash? I can\'t find it in DM mode or even extra of DM.

Thanks in advance.

i remember NAND backup/restore get FAT only wor!  u sure your CF is FAT format already?
also, 256MB tim.

Yes, I do sure my CF and SD is fat format because I have searched over many Zaurus forum which has mentioned that CF and SD must be FAT and well-fragmented.

But I still got the error \"format error\"..

Sigh!!!

Hong Kong / May I have the C860 Original ROM

http://www.trisoft.de/c860howto.htm

I got one in this site, but when I restore it from my SD card, it said sth like \"format error\".

I have tried NAND Backup and NAND Restore in Diag Mode. But they said \"can\'t initialize CF\". If I remove my CF, they can detect my SD. That\'s why I try to restore my ROM from SD.

Now I have installed pdaxrom 1.0, and I can\'t fallback to the original ROM.

Could anyone help me??
