Software / Some Oggs Are Better Than Others?
« on: January 27, 2005, 09:32:44 pm »
Media Player was crashing and emptying the playlist on every third song or so, and about at the same point. I put the blame on Media Player and bought tckPlayer. It crashed while scanning for loading its library...  I discovered that it was crashing at the same point in each scan, so that if I deleted the oggs that it was loading when it crashed, the crashes would not happen. Oddly, these seem to be the same oggs that made Media Player crash.

What's going on here? I've been ripping with the built-in ripping thing that comes with the KDE desktop/Konqueror (you just go to audiocd:/ and it displays the contents of the CD as MP3s, OGG, etc).

(I just posted about this elsewhere a little while ago... But now know a little more, so another post.   )

Software / Media player problem
« on: January 27, 2005, 09:05:48 pm »
Um, I have just started trying to use my 5600 as an ogg player, and now I'm sad, too. It plays a few tracks, then crashes and takes the playlist with it. Bought the tckPlayer, it crashes a second or two into scanning for tracks. Something seems fundamentally wrong... Does anyone have a clue?

General Discussion / USB Cellphone connection
« on: September 24, 2004, 02:00:41 am »
Hiya,

I am trying out a new Motorola V180 cellphone to replace my increasingly grimy Kyocera 2135. I had a CD Card modem for the Kyocera, which worked fine with the Zaurus after a certain amount of tweaking. This new V180 has a Mini-B USB port. Can I get a mini-B to mini-B cable to dial out, or do I need to get a new card modem with a USB connector? Does anyone have any experience with this? My searches in the forums did not turn up much.

Odi

Make an mp3 of the sound and post it...I\'d like to hear it

It sounds like the the sound of the sea heard in a seashell, heard over a really bad cellphone connection.

Has anyone developed anything that makes turning on a Zaurus (5600 in my case) a little more difficult? I keep pulling out mine to find that its on-button has got pushed in, and/or it is busy recording the sound of being inside its carry-bag.

General Discussion / What ROM is best
« on: March 31, 2004, 10:36:51 am »
Thanks!

Here is something posted by Tumnus, Oct 03, 2003:

] Only OZ can do rotation on the fly because that has been added to Opie, which is open source. All the other ROMs use the
] commercial version of Qtopia which is closed-source and only has that feature on the SL-Cxxx devices.

So it looks as if the choice is only beween qt-rotate (which sometimes makes my touchscreen seize up until I reboot) or OZ (unreliable for the 5600). From what I have been able to glean from other websites, the tckrom rotation restarts Qtopia every time you use it. I suppose the reboot is a small price to pay for rotation. Perhaps best to wait for a stable version of OZ, then, if one is (hopefully) in the works?

General Discussion / What ROM is best

Actually, what I would like to know is:

What are the differences between the different ROMs?

Which are most stable?

Is it possible to return to the Sharp ROM, and if so how?

Are there any issues with the PXA250 processor (other than the whole special-kernel issue)?

And... OpenZaurus\' one current offering for the 5600 says it\'s \"testing.\" I really want the integrated rotation but not at the risk of a paralyzed Zaurus... Is it OK?

For anyone who needs to figure this out:

To get USB connectivity to your Zaurus (or to anything) with 8.2, either you can install a patch or you can upgrade your kernel. SuSE 8.2 has 2.4.20, and for USB to function, you need 2.4.21. You can install this with YaST, but when you do, you will knock out your sound system. At least, that\'s what happened to me. (It also knocked out some parts of WindowMaker that connect with KDE, so I\'ve switched to KDE. I took the precaution of reinstalling KDE, but I don\'t know if that\'s necessary.)

I upgraded alsaplayer and all the packages it depends on. Then run alsaconfig -- after you do this, you will once again have a driver for your sound card. Although my sound card worked when tested, at this point nothing could actually produce any sound, at least, of any quality. I then turned off arts, which can be done very easily in the sound subsection of the Control Center, and reset the system notification to the system bell (otherwise instead of a bell, you get a blast of white noise). And I turned the volume back up in KMix (it had been reset to 0).

Incidentally, the easy way to keep the usb modules loaded with SuSE is just to use the /etc/sysconfig editor in YaST in the Software-]System section.

I hope this helps someone -- just wanted to give something back to this site, which has helped me so much. And yes, I did make a small donation as well.

Linux Issues / Synching with Linux 8.2 -- RPM, WindowMaker, Howto?
« on: March 28, 2004, 01:02:55 am »
I found the problem. It was, er, the cable. I don\'t want to say more than that because I feel very silly. Thanks to everyone in the Newbie forum for their forbearance.

General Discussion / USB kills kdeinit
« on: March 27, 2004, 04:31:20 pm »
I managed to get a USB connection going between SuSE 8.2 with the 2.4.21-199 kernel and my 5600. Now kdeinit no longer loads. If I start it up manually I get KDE functionality but things like my KDE addressbook are missing. Any ideas?

Linux Issues / Synching with Linux 8.2 -- RPM, WindowMaker, Howto?
« on: March 27, 2004, 03:45:05 am »
Thanks for your help! Sadly, I seem to be making things worse. I applied the patch, and I got the expected message in the /var/log/messages file, but usb-0 (or any new network connection) refused to appear, and attempts to synch resulting in a wildly flashing Zaurus.

I then tried updating my kernel from 2.4.20 to 2.4.21, as apparently it does not need the patch, which resulted in the message in /var/log/messages vanishing (and temporary loss of klauncher, and some kind of libGL error when I open YaST -- perhaps I need to upgrade the GLX driver thing now??).

I\'ve done all the steps described in your document, and still nothing. The modules that are described as necessary in the ZUG howto (usbcore, usb-uhci, and usbnet) all appear (lsmod) without having to be installed individually. Is there some other driver that is missing? Again, thanks for any and all help.

Linux Issues / Synching with Linux 8.2 -- RPM, WindowMaker, Howto?
« on: March 26, 2004, 10:36:26 pm »
I\'ve found the USB/Linux Howto and am carrying out its instructions even now. However, I think I have noticed a problem. Menuconfig defaults to having most things checked (as M). Carrying out only the instructions specified, I think I am loading every module known to humanity (with the exception of \"USB Communication Class Ethernet device support\"). It\'s been patching for the past ten minutes, and I see familiar words like Tekram and Belkin fly past, among other things. Um... will this cause me any problems? Or am I really supposed to load absolutely everything? Or will this nice script at the end just take care of everything anyway?

General Discussion / /dev/shm/.operasave
« on: March 26, 2004, 01:44:01 pm »
Does anyone know what this is? I connected to the local WLAN and started up Opera, which complained that there were certificate problems. I clicked \"Accept,\" after which, apparently, Opera tried repeatedly to open a (nonexistant) file called /dev/shm/.operasave, failed, and gave up.

Linux Issues / Synching with Linux 8.2 -- RPM, WindowMaker, Howto?
« on: March 24, 2004, 02:03:20 am »
Does anyone know:

Is there an RPM for QTopia Desktop for SuSE? Trolltech.com does not supply them, and redirects to SuSE, who, if they have one, have buried it too well for me to find.

Does it run under WindowMaker?

Has anyone put together a unimaginative, reliable howto about synching Suse 8.2 to a Zaurus 5600? I\'ve read so much about this that the perplexity is almost worse than knowing nothing at all, and there seem to be many creative solutions. All this creativity makes me a bit nervous, though, as I\'m just a Linux fumbler. I\'ve found references in threads to something in the Unofficial FAQ, but can\'t seem to find what they are talking about. I have found this which is for 9.0. It seems sensible -- has anyone tried it?

Thanks in advance!
