6000 - Tosa / GPS and the 6000L
« on: November 02, 2004, 03:15:34 pm »
I've connected a garmin using the SerialIO RS-232 connector.

http://www.serialio.com/products/adaptors/ZThinCable.htm

I was able to read the satelite data with qgps.  I only wish I could get better map software  for Z.  Ideally, I wish I could read the screen bitmap from the Garmin and just duplicate it on the Z.  Some time back I thought I saw a Mac or PC gps program that had decyphered enough of the Gramin protocol and knew the secret codes to request a bitmat dump from the garmin.  I can't find it anymore though.

The xscale processor should already be scaling down when it can.  Shouldn't it?

I've been doing some research on Sandisk, since this and other threads are bashing them so much, and this is so contrary some of the camera review sites (notably Steves Digicams) which is claiming the Sandisk Ultra II series as the best and fastest on the market.

I found a report from the last CES show where Sandisk was boasting a switch to the new ARC cores for their engines in the Ultra II and Extreme series cards, both SD and CF, and now Sony Sticks.  I don't know what Sandisk made their cards with previously (ARM? Mips? Anyone know?), but I do notice that on the benchmark sites cited by Steves and DPReview, the Ultra IIs are beating the socks off the competition on cameras that can actually keep up.  The Ultra IIs are actually consistently exceeding their promised read and write speeds of 10Mbs, while most of the other brands have a difficult time living up to their claims.  Granted, the Zaurii can't do IO this fast, but perhaps this bodes well for the future of Sandisk.  I have an Ultra II CF and while it wont write any faster on a Z, it does read at about twice the rate of a normal sandisk and others.

Here are links to Steves and a CF benchmark site....

http://www.steves-digicams.com/high-capacity_storage.html
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007

And here are quotes endorsing Sandisk's Ultra II....

CF:
Here's the fastest as of February 2004. The Lexar Media 80x Pro Series with Write Acceleration Technology (WA), and the new SanDisk Ultra II.

SD:
The new SanDisk Ultra II & Extreme SD cards are the fastest in the world and now they're also large enough to be mentioned on my High Capacity Storage report.

Disclaimer:
While I don't work for Sandisk, I do work for ARC, International, the chipset in the Ultra II.  I write and maintain compilers for most embedded processors and the ARC configurable core holds promise of reaching new heights in low-power, small, configurable processors with short time-to-market capabilities.  I think the Ultra II proves ARC's case, and maybe opens a new horizon for Sandisk.

Ive been looking too.  Not so much for the direction giving as much as just a good moving map.  I 've found the stuff that will connect to the gps and some free/share stuff for putting up a map, but nothing as suffisticated as for other platforms.  And I have no end of difficulty trying to get good maps.  I would gladly pay for an integrated package that would provide maps and work right out of the box.

my 5600 fits perfectly in the cup holder of both my car and truck.

mjalkut, can you post a link to exactly what you have for your 5600?  I did a search, but wasn\'t really sure what I was looking for.

Here is the ram-mounts page (which you probably found already):
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/3812.1.2.../rammounts.html

Here is the specific cradle that fits the 5600:
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/3812.3.1.../ramholpd1.html

Here is the page for the cradle with all of the different combo packages that can combined with it; the parts can all be purchased separately of course:
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/3812.2.1...lampmounts.html

Here is stuff about the non-skid weighted base:
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/3812.2.1...skidmounts.html

Here is the cradle that works for the sl6k:

What do you guys think?  Will it fit the 5600?

Thanks

I havn\'t tried this.

But have you looked at RAM mounts (see gpscity.com)?

RAM mounts has a side grip like that one.  But they also have two other universal grips - PD1 & PD2.  I have both.  The PD1 fits perfectly on my 5600.  And the PD2 works fine for the 6000.  The side grip mount (like the one above) looks like it protrudes too much in front with the two grip paddles.  The PD1 and PD2 do not.

RAM mounts has a immense assortment of plug&play connectors, including the flexible neck mount, and the one I find most universal -- the weighted non-skid base which can be placed virtually anywhere without need for glue, screws, cupholders, or vent-clips.  The 1\" ball and arm system seems to be the appropriate size for pda\'s.  Notice they have sizes ranging from cell-phone to laptop holders for nearly any application.

But on Z at best I may be seeing a 1% better speed using the ultra cf and nothing on the sd.

I have to correct myself.  After refining my test a bit, I am seeing that on read-only tests, the ultra II cf card is much faster than the plain sandisk.

When I get a chance I will try the same on the SD versions.

Writing is the same with both cards.

We had a box of the 3m brand transparencys - They aren\'t really matte but work quite well even in direct sunlight (I wrote a report for my boss last weekend sitting in a campground table).

They do scratch pretty easily but with the excellent backlight it hasn\'t bothered me much.

Thanks, I will give them a try.

$12.00 for a piece of film that slips under the edge?  Try my free version of the same thing... (bottom link)

been using one for more than a month and you get 9 per sheet!  Guess I\'m just cheap...

I\'ve been meaning to try this since your original post.  Since I first read it, I\'ve wondered: are there different kinds of transparency available? In particular I\'d like to find a non-shiny matte transparency that doesn\'t reflect as much glare as the nushields.

6000 - Tosa / Stylus for 6000

What about filing it down and making the .5 inches like 1/8 of an inch...is that possible?

I think that could easily be done.  You could chop off the top right down so that it was flush with the top of the 6k.  And the stylus would still have a ridged strip in the 6k\'s \"little-side-slot\" so that you could get it out with your thumbnail.  But it sits in there more tightly than the original stylus and is thus more difficult to pull out that way.  My own preference is to leave it protruding out the top so as I have something to grab.  I don\'t like the original for that same reason even though it is relatively easy to get out.  It is still awkward.  I wish the old Palm T spring-action worked with the 6k like it does with the 5600.  I wish  someone would make one like it for the 6k, so instead of having to dig the stylus out of the hole, you could just push and release and it would pop up giving you something to grab.  Until that happens, I think I prefer having it protrude so I can grab it.  Depending on what kind of case(s) I end up using, the protrusion may not be a nuisance.  We\'ll see.

6000 - Tosa / Stylus for 6000
« on: June 03, 2004, 10:36:31 pm »
Forgive me if there is already a 6000 stylus replacement topic.

I am using the Palm t spring-loaded stylus for the 5600 as recommended here.  It is great for the 5600 but doesn\'t work for the 6000.

So I, and I expect some of you are searching for alternative stylii to replace the relatively lame original.

I got one tip, I think from another board, to try the saitek universal stylus.  It is not made anymore and is hard to locate.  I havn\'t tried one yet.

I have tried several with little success.  The only one I like at all is a Palm III \"floating\" stylus made by landware.....

http://landware.com/floatingpoint/index.asp

It has a nice feel when using since the tip gives just a little under pressure.  And it is fat enough that it fits snug into the 6000 hole.  The only drawback is that it sticks out of the top for about .5 in.  For some, this may be a plus since it is much easier to grab and pull out of the Z.

For an altenative opinion of sandsik, I have 2 sansidsk 256 sd and 2 sandisk 256 cf and no problems in 4 months.  For each form I have 1 regular and 1 ultra II.  A side note: I havn\'t seen hardly any difference in speed between the ultra and the regular.  I have seen benchmarks showing the ultra II cf to be one of the only cards to show significant improvement in camera benchmarks (i think it is a review on Steves Digicam site).  But on Z at best I may be seeing a 1% better speed using the ultra cf and nothing on the sd.
