Sharp ROMs / How to boot in console mode?
« on: May 09, 2004, 06:58:05 pm »
I\'ve been trying to do this with the TkcRom and VirutalBoy gameboy emulator on the 5600 to see if I can get it to run better with out Qt running.   I replace the runqpe script with something like:

qeserver
VirtualBoyAdvanced /mnt/card/game.gba

but it allways just sits at that start up screen.  Am I missing something here?  Also insted of calling a direct program, is it possible to just load the terminal window and get a shell with out all the overhead of Qt and it\'s apps running?

5x00 General discussions / 5600 Running very slow
« on: April 10, 2004, 02:01:12 pm »
I installed the special kernel 1.3 and everything was going good.  Then I downloaded the overclock program and bumped my speed up to 471 to see how well it would help for movies.  It didn\'t seam to help much so I clocked it back down to what it was.  Now my Zaurus seams to be running very slow, this is noticed is games the most, things like pacman or brickout will slow down every 5-10 seconds, then speed back up again, sow down, speed out, etc...

Also I installed the Opie Pims and the calander and the addressbook are set to \'fast load\'.  I can tell becuase the programs are running, but when I hold down on them to bring into the menu for the fast load, there is no option to enable/disable fast loading of these apps.

I\'m using the latest beta TKC rom for the Zaurus

Software / Stream video to Zaurus?
« on: April 03, 2004, 07:21:46 pm »
I found that video lan software and I\'m going to test this out tonight.  It looks very nice, and there is even an client for the Zaurus!  The only thing... from what I\'ve read so far is that your under the controll of the computer that is streaming the video, no pause or anything.  Of course I could allways use VNC to controll it or maybe a linux box with ssh if it can be controlled though a terminal. Either way this is atleast a step int he direction I wanted, and can\'t wait to see this thing work!  Here is the link if anyone would like to give it a try.. no more dead SD cards from adding and removing large files! :0

Software / Stream video to Zaurus?
« on: April 03, 2004, 05:40:32 pm »
Everyone seams to want to compress the video down, and then store it on an SD card to play on the Zaurus.

What personaly I would rather do is play the video off a samba share, or better yet, \'stream\' it to the Zaurus with some kinda web streaming software of some sort.  Mostly I like to watch episodes and such, watch it once and I probably won\'t want to see it again for months.  With all of these episodes it makes no sence to me to store them all twice, once for playback on a computer, and once for playback on the Zaurus, thes files take up enough room on their own!

So the question is, can one \'stream\' the video to the Zaurus insted?  Is the the reason people compress the video down only for the size or are there other factors besides this?

Can you maybe re-code the size, or shink the video stream with some software in real-time to the Zaurus?

What software, is there any, that can watch video streams for the Zaurus?

This of course would be over 802.11b for the bandwidth.

Sharp ROMs / theKompany rom and installing software
« on: April 02, 2004, 01:45:07 pm »
Wolfman,  I have been using this \'fix\' since I posted it last night.  I\'ve rebooted, ejected, synced, installed software, everything works fine and my Wifi card just keeps working.   The only effect I can see this having is if by chance you want to use a CF memory card.  My best guess is that the Zaurus only uses /mnt/cf point when using it as a memory drive.  When I have my CF WiFi card plugged in, this mount point has a \'fake read-only\' file system, that I supose is ment to show the package installer that it can\'t install to the CF memory card.  Something must be broke either on this \'fake\' system or in the package installer that it maybe is trying to write to it and when it fails, it crashes??  I\'m really not good enough with ROMs yet to figure out \'why\' so I\'ll leave that up to the developers.

Also one thing I havn\'t tried, if people are having a problem with the package installer with no cards on the system is to loop the /mnt/cf and /mnt/card straight to /home to feedback to the package installer.

And one last important point, make sure during your installs that you DON\'T install the CF device, it will work, but your mappings will be screwed up if you ever remove that link!  I was being careless last night and installed a package to the CF, lucky I cought it and re-installed to the SD insted.

I\'m not sure if this is the same problem everyone is having with the package manager but I think I just got a fix, atleast for me.  Allthough this will take more testing.

What I have been doing is I flash by CF, but I never use the CF card for anything but flashing since I have an SD memory card and a CF wireless card that I allways leave in.

For some reason the package manager will only work if I have my CF memory card plugged into the system, I\'m guessing it allways thinks there should be a CF memory card in there and crashing when it doesn\'t see it and the window to select where to install the package comes up.

Does anyone know where to change this setting and block out ever doing an install to a CF card?

Edit: Allthough now I can install via SD or Internal memory, \"install from network\" does not work.  Probably becuase my network is a CF WiFi card?

Edit2: Ok one last thing for everyone to take a look at before I head off to bed....

This is cheap, but hay it worked, also fixes the \"install from network\".

mv /mnt/cf /mnt/cf-bak
ln -s /mnt/card /mnt/cf

Basicly I looped my CF mount point to my link to my SD mount point and now I can get the \'Install to\' window after selection of a package.  My wireless card will still work, can eject, insert again and connect.  Since I never plan on using a CF memory card, other then doing flash rom upgrades, this is fine for me.  If you need to use a CF memory card, just remove the link and move /mnt/cf-bak to /mnt/cf again.

Can someone test this in Zynergy, I can\'t remember if this is the same exact problem and don\'t really want to switch my ROM again just to find out.

I\'m using the initrd.bin-tkrom2.0alpha3-sl5600 with zImage-tkrom2.0alpha1-sl5600 and no matter what i do I can\'t seam to get the Add/Remove programs to work.  It works fine for feeds but anything I try to install off a SD card or from the internal memory, as soon as I select the package it closes the GUI.

Sharp ROMs / Moving directories to external storage
« on: April 02, 2004, 12:57:08 am »
I\'ve been trying to figure this out for a while myself.  Everything seams to be either for the 5500 or for OZ.

What I\'ve come up with so far is (and I havn\'t tired this yet to verify), that you just make links of the directorys you want to move to your SD.

Copy the directory to another directory on your memory card (say /home/QtPalmtop to /mnt/card/QtPalmtop), then remove the directory in /home, make a link from /home/QtPalmtop to /mnt/card/QtPalmtop

Also I\'ve found that you can\'t use FAT on the card, ext2 or such linux filesystem (how can you make a JFSS2 filesystem?) or Zaurus won\'t work right.

Can anyone else help with this?  Maybe a script or something would be nice, and knowing what directorys to move would help a lot.

Just wondering, as I\'ve had problems with certain versions working on my zynergy Z, will this work ok on a 5600???

I also can\'t seam to get v.11 working on my 5600 with Zynergy.  Has anyone tried v.10 with Zynergy and know where I can find the older version?

Edit: Found v.10 and that doesn\'t seam to work with Zynergy either.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Special Kernel and OZ on 5600?

Internal memory in the 5600 is NAND flash. As far as I know this cannot be used as a swap file. NAND flash also has a limited life, like CF and SD cards, but JFFS2 is especially designed to spread the writes evenly so it takes quite a while for it to die with this. However, even if you could create a swapfile on internal memory, it could burn it out fairly quickly and you can\'t replace it like you could a CF/SD card.

Ahh, now that would make a lot of sence of why \'not\' to do it, and why people havn\'t dug far enough to do it. )  I had thought the internal memory would have had a longer life span.  Would it be wise then to format all but the section i\'m going to use for swap on my SD card as JFFS2  I don\'t plan on removing this card from the 5600, thus why I bought such a large card.

Also would it be better to place the swap at the end of the SD card incase this section goes bad, or if one section goes bad the whole card goes out kinda thing?  I would rather loose an 8mb-32mb section at the end of the SD card then the whole thing.... does flash even have an \'end\' like a normal HD would, or am I mixing two technologys to much together here?

5x00 General discussions / Special Kernel bad link??
« on: April 01, 2004, 12:45:13 am »
Ok I\'m confused here... after I downloaded the kernel upgrade off the ZUG Downloads I get a file called:

zImage_Special5600_No_Preemptive_No_Overclock-c860ROMv1.10.bin

No Preemtive... No Overclock.. c-860???!!!

The first part of the file is right, \"zImage Special5600\", but I\'m a bit worried to flash this with the rest of the file name.  Was this just named wrong, or am I that tired that I\'m reading this all wrong here?  The version should also be v1.3, not 1.10.

I\'m using Opera 7.23 (Windows) to download this if by chance my browser screwed up, I\'ve seen it rename .ipk files to .tar before, but nothing this strange.

Sharp ROMs / Screen Rotate
« on: April 01, 2004, 12:36:05 am »
Well I have found a fix for this kinda.

http://www.apex.net.au/~twalker/qtpalmtop/

If you upgrade to Qtopia 1.6.2 you get a setting for \'rotation\', and can do it any of the 4 ways and there is no 20 second delay

I have switched to using Zynergy\'s ROM as I think that\'s about the best one for me, but now with Qtopia 1.6.2 I\'ve lost all the things that made Zynergy so cool.   Who\'s up for updating the Zynergy ROM to Qtopia 1.6.2??   That would give us 5600 users a very nice ROM in my eyes.

What is actauly needed to be done to do something like this, and where can I find information on how to make ROMs?

There is no \'Advanced\' under Apperance that I can find, anyone else able to find this? What rotation app are you using? The only one I can find is qtopia-rotation_1.5.0_arm.ipk
