Accessories / Inexpensive 5x00 Case
« on: April 22, 2004, 08:03:44 am »
FWIW, If you need an interim case for your 5x00 while you look
for just the right one;  the local Target store (check yours)
is clearance-ing a TI-86/83 zipper case for less than $4.
Plenty of room, storage, pencil/stylis holders etc.
Lightly padded and strudy.  I think I can add an
elastic band to hold my 5600 in place. There are
several credit card sized pockets inside and a zippered
pocket outside; large enough to hold CF card etc.

(no connections)

5x00 General discussions / 5600 System backup
« on: April 20, 2004, 02:01:42 pm »
The 5600\'s arrived. (one for me, one for son).  I\'ve been
playing with one. The other one I\'ve only turned on to make
sure it is functioning, and only set the date on it.
I know the backup utility backs up data that I create. But
is there a process to save out the ROM or kernal (or whatever)
while the 5600\'s are still virgin? ie. To put it back to
\'out of the box\' condition.

The supplied CD has a directory with these files:

DATA1.CAB
DATA1.HDR
DATA2.CAB
IKERNAL.EX_
LAYOUT.BIN
Setup.exe
Setup.ini
Setup.inx

Are those the sum total of restore files?  Or are they part
of the pc linking stuff?  I didn\'t see these files anywhere
on the pc after installing the CD.
One reason I ask is I read a thread on here that after doing
a reset or restore someone found that there were some
system files or drivers missing.

...Buy one for yourself and one for your son, also consider purchasing a CF wireless card for him so he can use it for internet connection.
regards.

He has a Netgear brand  card for his laptop.  Don\'t know what model offhand but I think it\'s the 802.11b flavor.  Would that more than likely work in the 5600?

tnx,

...a processor that has a bug?
cad

Some of the 5600s have the bug, some don\'t. The ones that don\'t use the pxa255 cpu and not the pxa250. There really isnt any way to tell which you will get though.

What  does the bug boil down to?  Does it have some small effect on
rare applications or is it a real pain everytime you turn the 5600 on?

... Is it due to be obsoleted soon?

cad

My understanding is that it is due to be \"obsoleted\" soon.  Try a similar search for SL-6000 on amazon.  Clint Reese

At $300 vs. $700, I can get two 5600\'s, one for me and one for my
computer geek son.   It would be a fancy toy for me and I guess
somewhat for him.  But if it\'s obsoleted soon,  would he be pitching it
soon?  He\'s in cs @ Purdue and pretty much has grafted his laptop
to the end of his wrist.  Would the 5600 be an asset for college course
stuff?

I\'ve been casually shopping for pda\'s for a few months.
The sl 5600  at Amazon looks like a good deal.

Questions:

There are some reviews around that sounds
like maybe those are being sold with a processor that
has a bug?

How long has the 5600 been around? Is it due to be
obsolited soon?
