I\'d encourage you to summarize your finding on how it all works on a new page in the Wiki!

Would a good HOWTO be in order? I can see only two package related HOWTOs in the wiki:

Has google already indexed it for us?

Sorry. I have only used the builtin media player on my 5600.

People have recommended the command-line media player that comes with kino2, but I couldn\'t get it to work. (I get a bus error when I try to run it.) However, other people did get it to work with their 5600. Maybe you\'ll have some luck there?

Finding the right video solution for me is high on my \"todo\" list, but I don\'t know when I\'ll actually get to it. VLC (which I think reads the video on the desktop and streams it over the network to the Zaurus?) sounds intriguing (so I don\'t have to rip and encode my DVDs).

I\'m running the Viking SD512M with the original formatting. I scp\'d a bunch of MP3s and running them with the Sharp Media Player works just fine. Of course, I just realized that I forgot to look at the bit-rate of the MP3s so that might not help much. (They were free MP3s from one of the sites that showcases unknown artists so it\'s possible they were very low bit rate.) Maybe I\"ll try yet again with some ripped from my own CDs at high bit-rates and report back.

Sharp ROMs / 5600 Original Install CD

Err... doesn\'t that link only have the new 1.32 ROM update and nothing else... or am I missing something?

I have had good experiences with Viking in general. I recently got a Viking 512MB SD card, but haven\'t really put it through its paces yet. I\'ll try loading it up tonight with music and see how it does. I\'ll also try to remember to get more specific info about the card.

Sharp ROMs / cacko ROM for the SL5600
« on: April 27, 2004, 01:06:56 pm »
New 5600 owner here. I will definitely be interested in upgrading ROM / kernel sometime soon (but want to get my feet wet on the stock first) but I\'m still trying to sort out the bewildering variety of options and understand which options actually support the 5600.

A cacko for the 5600 would be excellent since it is one of the ones that seem to be well liked by those using it.

(Just to be sure I remember correctly, the cacko ROM is a Qt based system, right?)

5x00 General discussions / kino2 mplayer on 5600: bus error
« on: April 25, 2004, 07:09:36 pm »
I installed kino2 on my 5600 (original 1.21 sharp rom). When I try to run mplayer from a shell prompt, I get a bus error.

I\'ve seen several suggestions that the mplayer from the kino2 distribution is a good one to use, but I guess I\'m not sure if it is 5600 compatable. (At this point, I\'m not really sure what makes things compatable or not.)

The FAQ suggests that a bus error might result from a damaged download. I downloaded the package several times from several different client computers using several different mechanisms. I get a md5sum of
Code: [Select]
cbb5914fc06efd169fba1d602cbfacf8 kino2_0.3_arm.ipk

So, I wondering if this version of mplayer should be able to work on my 5600. If it should any ideas on what to check?

If it shouldn\'t, I guess I have two choices: modify my setup to accomodate it (use a different rom or kernel?) or find a different media player.

What I want to be able to do is encode some portions of my DVDs to watch (and listen to) on my 5600.

I would welcome suggestions for a next step. I\'ve searched the forums and the HOWTOs and the FAQ and I\'m basically confused because when people talk about this or that package it\'s never clear if the package works with the 5600 and the Sharp ROMs.

Sorry about that... My problem did turn out to be corrupted downloads.

General Discussion / Help the n00b - I can\'t install packages.
« on: April 18, 2004, 07:59:12 pm »
I found the following references in the Software section of the FAQ:
Why do some packages not appear in the list when I try to install software?
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...parent_id=0#202
How do I tell if a package is for the Sharp ROMs or OPIE based ROMs? http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...parent_id=0#203
Can I install OPIE apps on the Sharp ROM? http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...parent_id=0#213
, but they don\'t seem to be bz2, gzip, or zip compressed, either. For example, here are two I\'m tryng to use:
      libSDL (
http://gnurou.org/software/zaurus/feed/libSDL_1.2.6cvs-1_arm.ipk)
opie-reader (http://www.timwentford.uklinux.net/opie-reader_0.7c_arm.ipk)
I\'ll keep poking around to figure out how to extract the files out of them, but if someone wants to offer a hint, I\'d be grateful.

My 5600 has (according to the manual) 512KB ROM, 64MB flash memory, 32 MB RAM.

What\'s in the 512KB ROM? Is that where the maintanence menu is? Is that really ROM or is it some sort of PROM? When we \"flash the ROM\" are we changing anything in that ROM or just in the flash memory?

The flash memory, from what I have read is broken into 2 partitions? One that is read-only for the kernel and \"built-in\" apps. (I guessing that is the stuff that gets replaced when we \"flash the ROM\".) That\'s the one lardman discussed above? The other is read-write and is where we as users install applications and save documents... (Although maybe that explanation is only true for the stock kernel?)

I\'m a n00b, too, so what I have said here is what I understand so far, but I may be way off base.
