6000 - Tosa / Great CF deal!
« on: October 26, 2004, 10:13:50 am »
Okay, I just saw this deal for two, 2.2 GB CF+ Type II MicroDrives for only $82 each.  I've been looking for a bigger flash card, and this looks like it.

But I had a couple of quick questions..

- Type II CFs don't work on all devices, will they work on the 6000?
- Will I have to do some special formatting because of the size, or will it just work?
- What're the downside to MicroDrives?   Longer/shorter battery life?  Same as normal flash?

Please respond quickly, cuz I don't know how long this deal will be around for!

SOLUTION: Use www.Shadango.com to check all your external email accounts.  It's free, zaurus-compatable, and checks more than just gmail (hotmail, yahoo, aol, etc)

6000 - Tosa / Offline web readers
« on: May 23, 2004, 02:51:54 pm »
There has to be something better than \'wget\'.  I tried it for awhile, but it\'s just not that suited for doing very select spidering of websites.  That is.. unless someone has created a great script to manage the offline browser with wget.

But there has to be some comprehsive spidering application out there.. or somebody must have gotten one of the web-cache programs from killefiz.de working...

Remaining optimistic,
Ben

Hey all..

What offline www readers are you guys using?  I trield a couple listed on killfiz.de/zaurus but none of them would install.

I\'m sure that some people out there are able to use Opera for reading the latest sports news in style during their morning commute.. so what are you guys using?  And what are some good sites you all have found to pull content from daily?

Well.. that \'Refusing To Start Unless The Battery Is Sorta Full\' feature is probably a Good Thing.  It probably helps make sure the battery doesn\'t get hammered really hard when it\'s low on power, things like that tend to royally screw up the battery\'s lifetime.

The real problem is the fact that the device doesn\'t sleep when the network is connected.  If you\'re going to dig into the kernal for anything... one should look into fixing that bug.

I noticed the same behavior on mine yesterday -- if the network is on, it doesn\'t suspend.

Kinda sucks, really... it\'s not like it doesn\'t suspend when a little low-power app is running, but when a power-hungry component is on.  That makes the problem much more annoying.

I also tried it a while ago and no luck.  But yeah.. VoIP on this thing would be AWESOME.

Anybody out there talking on this thing?

Man.. that previous post sure knows how to make somebody feel good!

The kernal has only recently been released, and due to the demand of those 3 apps, I hope it\'s only a matter of time until some hardcore hacker takes an interest gets those apps running for all us little people.

Any hardcore hackers out there up for a challenge?

6000 - Tosa / 6000 Killer Appz.. suggestions please!

I recently got my 6000, and it\'s great.  But I find myself still thinking in traditional PDA mode when brainstorming about things I can run on it.

So here I submit a request to the community: What are some cool apps you guys have gotten running on this thing so far?  And were there any tricks involved?

One \'out of the box\' thing I DID try.. was to get LinPhone working on it.  The mic and speaker are in a perfect spot to just hold to your head like a regular phone.. but for whatever reason the program didn\'t start

But anyway.. what are some great programs to have on there, and how did you guys go about installing them?

6000 - Tosa / Resolution problems when running 5500/5600 programs
« on: April 23, 2004, 09:13:00 am »
D\'oh!!

Got it working..   for anyone else having this problem, turn off \'Magnifed\' mode for the program in question: Press and hold the stylus on a program icon, and uncheck the appropriate checkbox.

For some reason it appears that \'Magnified\' mode is the default that everything has been installed with.

Anyone know the purpose of running something magnified?

6000 - Tosa / Resolution problems when running 5500/5600 programs
« on: April 23, 2004, 09:04:31 am »
For some reason, whenever I run an older app (55/5600) started from the Application menu, the resolution gets all jacked up.  It looks like it\'s \'zoomed in\' and everything is pixelated.

Now, I know that some of this is to be expected due to the higher resolution on the 6000, but I think I\'m seeing a resolution that\'s even below what it would be on a 55/5600.

For instance, I recently installed Gaim.  If I start it from the App menu, everything is \'zoomed in\' -- so much so that the \'Add Account\' button isn\'t even on the screen (and thus not clickable).   I found a temporary workaround by starting from the console (that appears to keep it in the high resolution mode), but as soon as I switch away to a different program and come back, the resolution is \'zoomed in\' again.

I believe this is happening in just about every older program I\'ve tried to run.  And unfortunately, I think it\'s making a number of programs unusable by hiding menu options, or entire window segments.

Am I totally missing some simple setting?

6000 - Tosa / How to get started? (please help)
« on: April 18, 2004, 03:02:43 pm »
I see.. well, I finally fixed the problem by rebooting.  I don\'t know why that would work on a linux box.. but oh well.

2 more questions..

What if I try some crazy stuff and royally screw up the device -- Is there a way to get it back to the original state it shipped in?

And finally, what are some good sites to find software for the Zaurus?

Thanks for the reply!

I don\'t know if I\'m a total moron, but I can\'t install any apps.  Here\'s what I tried..

I downloaded a .ipk file, and moved it into the ..../Install_Files/ directory.  I then tried starting up the provided package install tool, but it didn\'t list anything I could install.

I then tried manually going to the directory, and running \'ipkg install PROGRAM.ipk\' -- which gave me the following error: \"mkdir: Cannot create dorectory \'//home/tmp/ipkg/ssh\': Permission denied\"

This is so frustrating.  Did I break something?  Or am I doing something totally wrong?

And finally, how did you guys all get to be pros at this stuff?
