I have a working Android 0.9i Beta currently, using a patched 2.6.26 kernel. I'll post an image with instructions on my Blog shortly.

Cheers,

Great!  Thank you.  I'll be watching your blog.
I really appreciate you Linux Mavens who are willing to share your work with those less technically gifted!

Has this thread totally died?  I can't imagine there has been NO progress on Android for Zaurus in nine months!

I do find sites that tell Linux experts how to roll-your-own but no updates on the install files.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What's The Best Choice While Waiting For Pdaxrom 2?

Hi everyone, I've been away for a while, and was never a big poster, and I just realized: I haven't been to these forums in ages.  Why?  Because pdaXII13 has been so good to me, and I've been busy with school.
[SNIP]

Your post sounds like I could have written it.  (except for the school part - I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather - LOL)

I've been using a variety of Zauri over the years, 5100, 6000, 1000, now 3200.  I really liked OZ but became discouraged when development ceased.  Angstrom is just too unfinished for me.  I'm an I.T. manager and justify the Zaurus at work as a portable tool for network auditing - hence wi-fi and tools like kismet/wellenreiter and nmap are essential, and I need those functions to work pretty much "out of the box".  I'm NOT a Linux geek, but enjoy learning.  I have a pretty good technical background in a lot of OSes but somehow Linux got left out of the mix.

I've used the original Sharp ROM (English version!), OZ, Cacko, Angstrom, the later revisions of pdaXrom (R198) but I keep on coming back to pdaXii13.  I recently upgraded to V2, (rev .4) and it is working well for me.  Since I'm still very much learning the 2.4 kernel, it looks like going to 2.6 is not a good idea for me right now, so I'll probably stick with this ROM for a while.  As has been stated elsewhere, Meanie's alpha code is more stable that a lot of released code.

I'm not real clear as to what advantages the new kernel offers anyway.

I hope that's useful information.  Like you, I try to make what small contributions I can, but my technical expertise limits how much I can contribute.  BTW, there are several threads on this topic.  Search for "Which ROM?" and you'll find a few.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Icewm Woes
« on: November 09, 2007, 01:04:23 pm »
I've been reading the forums, RTFM'ing and looking at files on my Zaurus all morning, but this has me stumped - and it's one of those really dumb issues that drives me nuts!

I came back home to pdaxii13 on my 3200 a few days ago, and then upgraded to pdaxiiv2.  Everything is fine, I've gotten all the software I wanted installed and running, but could I leave well enough alone?  NOOO!

I'm using icewm and really like it.  I started looking at Themes (from the main menu) and changed to icedesert just to see what it looked like.  When icewm started up again, the Start menu (the "X" in the lower left corner) was gone.  I can still bring up the menu using the Menu key, but I'd really like to have the icon back.

After horsing around for a couple of hours, I dropped out of X and removed/installed icewm.  Nothing has changed.  Oh, the icewm menu editor complains it can't open /home/root/.icewm/keys and /home/root/.icewm/menu.  That hasn't changed either - it was complaining before the reinstall.

I'm stumped at this point and would welcome any help I can get.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Version Issues
« on: November 07, 2007, 03:26:15 pm »
I just came back to pdaXii13 after a trip to the 2.6 kernel via r198 and Angstrom.

I verified that I had the 5.4.9 files from the tyrannozaurus site and flashed my 3200 with the "full" version. (initrd.bin, tools.tar and updater.sh from Akita and hdimage-full.tar from Spitz)
I fixed up my wpa_supplicant.conf and wifi-radar files, and of course my wifi card (Ambicom WL1100-CF) did not work.
Based on prior experience with this ROM, I did a manual (ipkg from command line) install of hostap-drivers and hostap-utils (version 0.4.7-1)  I have no idea what version is installed by flashing the ROM, but it has never worked for me in the past.  (hostap-utils -v or hostap-utils --version give errors)
I also installed wifi-radar 1.9.8-2 and that gets my network going.

Then I did ipkg update and started ipkg upgrade.  It ran for a while and then upgraded hostap-drivers, and the whole thing quit.  Now I have no network connection.

Questions:
- How can I exclude a package from ipkg upgrade?
- Is that even a good idea?  I want to keep things current but the version installed by flashing clearly doesn't work.
- How can I get things back to where they are working without re-flashing?
- The Tyrannozaurus download page clearly says this is 5.4.9, but the pdaXii13 Config Tool says 5.4.7.  Who's lying and how can I find the version number other than the config tool?

TIA

C1000/3x00 General discussions / So Which Rom Should I Use For 3200?

1. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Take out the battery.
3. Press and keep holding D and M.
4. While still holding them insert battery (this takes some juggling :0) )
5. While still holding lock the battery in place with the battery switch
6. While still holding wait 4-5 seconds
7. The English menu will pop up

This is a few months late, but maybe it will help someone.
Being fairly clumsy, I was glad to find this simplified procedure:
1. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Take out the battery.  (I replace the battery cover loosely for stability of the case.)
3. Press and hold Fn, D, and M
4. Insert the power cable.
5. The English menu will pop up. (Release the keys.)

Zaurus - pdaXrom / R198 First Touches And Experiences
« on: October 26, 2007, 11:23:20 am »
This thread has evolved into a bug reporting discussion.  If you don't mind I'd like to get it back on track.

This is my first serious experience with pdaXrom r198.  I have a C3200 and most recently was using pdaXii13 on it, but due to the inclusion of a lot of the networking into the new kernel, I decided to switch.

There are a lot of mysteries about r198 that I'd like to learn more about.  I've been searching the forums and wikis for a few days and have not found the answers I'm looking for.

What about that wonderful 6BG hard drive on the 3200?  pdaXii13 made use of it, as does Angstrom, but I don't see where r198 would use it for anything but a big data drive.  I tried the following based on hluc's writeup for pdaXii13:
Code: [Select]
#mkswap /dev/hda2
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 100634KB
#swapon /dev/hda2
swapon: /dev/hda2: Invalid argument
(I should point out that I've been fooling around with Zaurii or a few years now, and have probably learned just enough about Linux to be really dangerous.)

I was wondering if the hard drive images from pdaXii13 could be used for any benefit, but it seems that just untaring the files to the hdd would not do anything, and there would no doubt be problems with the kernel versions.

Speaking of the hard drive, df shows me partitions 2 and 3 but not partition 1 on the hard drive.  Where did it go?  The root partition appears to be the flash ROM.

My network card burned out on me, so I have been trying to set up bluetooth so I can use my cell phone as a modem.  There is no bluetooth networking applet, and the various instructions I have found to get bluez cofigured are not working.  hcitool scan reports the device is not available, and all the instructions I've read say to use the applet to set up; but there is no applet.  The PPP modem applet seems to have bluetooth capability, but the "Search" button says "can't get DUN info"

So I'm pretty much stuck here, and I could use some help.

TIA

It works great for me. You need to flash my kernel, though, which only works with r198, Cxx00 AFAIK. I'll put the kernel and stuff in the "junk" directory in /Zaurus at techassassins.
Thanks, Cap'n!

I'll give it a try tomorrow!
I haven't ever gotten r198 to flash properly, so I may be back for more help

I know, but I'm a RAM Czar

It's done building, I'm building the new packages list now, and am going to upload it to my feed ASAP. I'll probably build the quick-launch plugin as well.

Capn Fish,
I was looking at your feed, and I see you have Aircrack there.  Does it support injection using the hostap drivers?  I temporarily went over to Cacko since there were some hostap-utils there that worked, but I'd like to come back to pdaXii13!

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Pdaxii13v2: First Collection Of Experiences
« on: October 09, 2007, 03:26:43 pm »
I have a little more information and a question for Meanie (or anyone else who might want to help)

I've been going throught the code for wifi-radar with my limited knowledge of Python, and have found one error I was making...
In the "Connection Commands" portion of the Profile, I had been putting
Code: [Select]
iwconfig wlan0 up in the "Before" box.  The program actually does this if you tick the "ifup required" box in Preferences.  There is no need to specify in both places, and the connection commands are executed after the ifup piece, so it's probably harmless, just redundant.

My Question:
In running wifi-radar from the command line, the following message keeps repeating every time the program makes an inquiry of the interface:
Warning: Driver for device wlan0 recommended version 18 of Wireless Extensions, but has been compiled with version 16, therefore some driver features may not be available...

I don't know what I can do to resolve this, or even if it has any bearing on my current issues.  I did an ipkg upgrade earier today, so everythng should be up-to-date.  I have hostap and wps_supplicant versions 0.4.7-1 installed. How that relates to any versions of Wireless Extensions I just don't know.  I don't have any ability to compile anything (except what might live on the Zaurus - I have the Full install on a 3200)

That's exactly what I did.
I Flashed 5.4.9, got my wifi working, then upgraded to 5.5
Make sure you have a good internet connection when upgrading from 5.4.9 to 5.5
I first tried using USB networking and my Z went into suspend. That resulted in my connection being lost. I couldn't re-connect.
I then flashed 5.4.9 again, and upgraded to 5.5 using my wifi connection.
First thing you should do before upgrading is make sure you disable suspend!
I also did a ipkg update, then removed the last 3 entries in ipkg.conf (I did it in the gui packagemanager)
They were paths that pointed to feeds in these 3 locations. SD Card, CF Card, and ide
I think this minimizes the error messages in the install because I have no local feeds on any of my media.

I followed pretty much the same procedure.
On pdaXii13, I had things working well.  After setting up /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, wifi-radar worked flawlessly, every time.  I could even run kismet (notorious for fouling up the network settings and not putting them back) and wifi-radar would connect to my AP and get a DHCP address within seconds.

After the upgrade to pdaXiiv2, wifi-radar only works intermittently.  Most of the time it sits trying to acquire a DCHP address for a really long time and then gives up.  I've written a script to manually start the network, and that works most of the time, but as others have reported, for some reason the card quits after a few minutes.  My network card is an AmbiCom WL1100CF but is incorrectly reported as a Z-Com XI300.  That's not new, I ignore it in pdaXii13 and it worked fine.

So, I seem to have good network connectivity only immediately after a reboot.  If I let the Z go to sleep and wake up again, it disconnects after a few seconds.  Removing and reinserting the card does not help.  Somehow we need to find a way to reset the network parameters to the state they are in after a reboot, before trying to start the card.

I know very litle Python, but I have uploaded wifi-radar to my PC so I can have a look at the code.  If I see anything interesting I will post it here, and perhaps a Python guru can help out.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Wpa, Hostap And Ambicom Wl1100c Problems
« on: October 04, 2007, 04:57:03 pm »
In pdaxii13 I had everything working just fine.

I created a wpa_supplicant.conf in /etc with just the bare essential information (after mv-ing the existing one)

Code: [Select]
#/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1

network={
       ssid="MySSID"
       proto=WPA
       pairwise=TKIP
       psk=AC373C7C9925130F0734CA01D333485BF1001DD47F1D8F48B21AEC4F4A655C57
       priority=1
}

Then I installed the hostap 0.4.7 and wpa_supplicant 0.4.7 files.  I don't know why this was necessary, but there seems to be something wrong with the installed ones.

I used the LAN & Wifi applet to set up just the SSID for my network and then edited /etc/pcmcia/network.opts to add WPA="y" under my network. (I don't know if this is necessary.)

Then I set up my network in wifi-radar, forcing it to use wlan0, and specifying hostap under WPA and it all worked!

BUT.....

I had some sort of disaster and could not get any programs to work, so I tried restoring the Zaurus from the backup I had made a few days ago.   The backup wouldn't install - something wrong with initrd.bin

SO.....

I did a clean install of pdaXii13 5.4.9 and upgraded it to pdaXiiv2
wifi-radar now does not work. It gives:
Code: [Select]
Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/local/bin/wifi-radar", line 1580, in ?
         auto_profile_order = auto_profile_order.split(',')
AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'split'
(I typed that, I hope it's exact :-)

AND NOW......

I can still get connected to my AP with the following commands:
Code: [Select]
#ifconfig wlan0 up
#wpa_supplicant -Dhostap -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
#dhcpcd wlan0

I hope that helps you get connected.
If anyone can help me with getting wifi-radar to work, I'd be grateful.

Was there any interest in this?
I'm looking for much the same thing for pdaXi13.
I'm especially interested in Wireshark (which is available for Angstrom).   The version of ethereal in the feed is rather old.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What's Where On The 3200?
« on: September 18, 2007, 10:35:59 am »
Thanks for the clarification, Meanie.

And thanks (I don't know who all the developers are) for pdaXii13.

I have been trying various ROMs on various Zauri for several years.  I use the Zaurus primarily for auditing wireless LANs at work.  I had settled on OZ 3.5.4.1 for a while but then the development  was discontinued in favor of Angstrom, which requires too much in-depth knowledge of Linux for my work application, although it's great fun as a learning tool.

pdaXii13 has been stable, well documented, and easy to work with - just what I need for my job.

I'm blessed to have both a C1000 an a C3200 so will continue to experiment with various ROMs on the C1000 while pdaXii13 will be my reliable "work horse" for use in my job.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / What's Where On The 3200?
« on: September 16, 2007, 09:34:41 am »
Possibly someone can help out a Linux amateur (I've graduated from N00B but still don't know a lot)

From what I have read and experienced, on the 3200 with the full install of pdaXii13, a lot of files are copied from the hard drive into RAM to improve speed during the installation process.

Now, I find many files in both locations.  for example

# find / -name kismet.conf

locates a copy in /etc and another in /media/fakeroot/etc, and neither are symlinks.

Which one is the "real" kismet.conf?
Are they somehow magically kept synchronized or do I need to make sure of that manually?
Do I even care if they get out of sync?
Is /etc the RAM copy and /media/fakeroot/etc located on the hard drive?

Thanks.

Walt
