6000 - Tosa / /dev/root 99% Full - Is That Normal
« on: February 09, 2005, 06:06:53 pm »

When I enter the 'df' command, I notice that I see:

/dev/root 28672 28248  99%

What is that memory for? Can I format/clear it somehow?

Is it affected by flashing my Z?

That directory/mount-point is normal for the Sharp Rom, mine is almost identical.

I dont think you can change it without jumping through some hoops (like remounting the filesystem in RW and purging files). Probably best to leave it alone.

6000 - Tosa / My Z Is Acting Weird

The 6000 user space (/home) is small (~32mb) compared to the clamshells (~96 - +2GB).  I have seen some threads where people reconfigure the Z to use an SD card for /home.  That should give you more room to grow.  I haven't done it so I can't confirm. A search should help you.

Becareful moving all of /home -- this could render your 6000 unbootable!
You should move only the directories you need out of home, not necessarily /home itself.
See my old thread about this topic.

Thanks Tyris! I will do that too. So from now on, I have to be careful with those details?

Once you keep in mind that you're writing to flash ram for useless stuff like web caching it just makes sense to minimize it. Granted the internal flash should last a very very long time with normal use, I've tried to minimize the amound of wear and tear mine receives.

I've moved ~zaurus, /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/lib, and the entire /opt/qtopia directory onto an SD card formatted with ext2. This sd card is now not really removable (as the lion's share of the GUI interface resides there). The primary benefit is that I can now install 256M of software as if it were internal flash without adding undue wear and tear to a non replaceable part.

You can search my posts as I documented my adventures doing that

I've backed up the SD card by suspending the zaurus, and sticking the SD into my desktop's card reader and making a tar.bz2 file out of it. SD fit the bill better than CF here because some CF cards seem to be unmounted on suspend. I dont recommend doing this for the faint of heart, but if you know your way around the Z's file system you should be OK.

Have you purged the opera browser cache? (should probably set the disk cache to 0k since we're dealing with flash ram here). Also purge your .bash_history and any other temp files you may have.

The cache is located in the .opera directory in ~zaurus

good luck

Ugh. Can't wait for the viruses to hit that thing. Also, good luck getting an alternate OS on any cellular networked device. They'd never allow anything other than the ones they specifically approve.

Anyhow, I perfer my phones small, thin and simple, and my PDAs running linux.

Good point! That would be the easiest way, if you are mananging your files from the Zaurus (since it only has NFS client). It works great, and even over wilreless.

Hmm. I had a poor experience with NFS on my Zaurus. Not sure why, but it was flakey at best, and caused the machine to hang outright most of the time. I had a much easier time mounting SMB shares.

Could be general lack of experience maintaining NFS networks, but SMB was pretty easy to do. Did you have to do anything special on the server side (or client side for that matter,) to get it running smoothly?

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Kathrin Rc9 Out..

there was a largely ignored thread on this, that left me with the impression that 6000 support was to be considerd after this release. is 6000 support being considered for pdaXrom?

Would it be possible to setup a sl6000 specific donation section for pdaXrom?

The keyboard rocks.  Even on a 5600 i can do 25 wpm.  just got the 860.  I read somewhere that msft actively discourages keyboards on pdas with their os.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=64414\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Screen and lack of keyboard are the biggest drawbacks to the R1000. Hate to admit it, Im spoiled by the screen on the sl6000, anything less now feels cramped and doesnt work for well web browsing  Also running windows on a PDA feels like computing with hand cuffs on, nothing is configurable, and reduces the device from being a small customizable linux box to a really dumbed down and limited computer.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / pdaXrom on SL-6000

Sash has been looking into this.. First off all the lack of a SL6000 in our hands is a big problem but that might be fixed soon :-)

Secondly the chipset used in the SL6000 is completely different from the Cxxx series so there can be now hardware accelleration right now and some other things are different..

But rest assured that we are working on making support for the SL6000 and as soon we are closer to the complete version of Kathrin we will be looking into the making other hardware work with the pdaXrom.
As noted earlier in the sl-6000 sub-forum, we've got a fairly large base of installed owners (seeing as how Amazon and other vendors are all sold out). Many of us are would like to support development of pdaxrom for the 6000.

Can any of the pdaxrom developers comment on the upcoming road-map for future releases, and whether there are plans to support the sl-6000. Also, is there a fund setup for hardware and further research/development on the 6000?

6000 - Tosa / 6000 Rom Creation
« on: January 05, 2005, 07:10:56 pm »
I welcome an X-based Rom for the 6000. I dont know the dev roadmap for PDAXROM, but Im intrigued to see interest in an similar rom from other angles.

Does anyone know if PDAXROM will ever make it to the sl6000?

Screen is only 320x240. Comparable resolution to a 5500 or 5600, and should be plenty for viewing video. No where near the functionality of the 6000 or c3000 though. Any sane way to get wireless working on it?

3)the Zaurus cannot act as a USB mass device, right?
4)How can I get a console? Is it installed by default?

The Z does not respond as a USB mass storage device.

If I recall correctly, console (terminal) is not installed by default. It is included on the CD in the zaurus box, along with a few other packages.

Sorry I cant answer the others as I dont have my Z in front of me and I've never used the death-star cradle. I found it easiest to connect to my linux server via wireless and download the terminal app from the local webserver. It installed in a snap, from there I could ftp around and grab other things.

6000 - Tosa / I Got My SL-6000... Now What?
« on: September 04, 2004, 12:38:45 am »
I connect mine to the rest of my network via wireless. It fetches a dhcp from my wireless router, and can surf the web without problem.

As for connecting to my other linux machines, the Z can host an FTP server and telnet server, but I've opted to use use sshd. This permits me to ssh, sftp and scp both in and out for file exchange. I've setup smbmount on the Z to connect to my mp3 server, so it acts as a portable player while connected to the network.I've never used the death-star cradle, as ssh/samba seem to be the easiest way to move things around.

Installing software is pretty straight forward: point the Opera browser to:
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/

Seems to be the most comprehensive software index. Most of the stuff works well on the 6000.
Download files and use the internal install tool.

Note that you won't be able to install onto your SD card unless you format it with ext2. I've done this and it works well. With some careful symlinking you can setup the sd card as an extension of internal memory (essentially moving /usr/local/* and other directories to the sd card). Do that at your own risk though, I started a thread covering that topic a while back detailing how I did this.

let us know how it goes
