General Discussion / Where are all the "official" Zaurus resources?
« on: May 06, 2004, 09:31:35 am »
Hi. I am getting quote frustrated!  Sharp\'s Zaurus resources are

1) out of date -- no mention of the SL6000 on myzaurus.com, for example

2) broken -- links to the \"developer\" section come up with \"cannot be displayed\"

3) incomplete -- maybe this stems from points (1) and (2).

Take for example the following how-to, dated October, 2003:

http://linuxdevices.com/articles/AT6830035793.html

The links to \"resources\" -- basically the cross-compilation environment -- are all broken!

I am having similar problems with other Zaurus information.  For example, the files at http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ are mostly old, old, old! Not that that is necesarily a problem, because a lot seem to work on the SL6000. But VGA mode is a problem for many of the older apps.

Anyways, here is what I want to do:

1) be able to compile/create packages from source.
2) Get SMB working so I can mount my server shares on my Z. (not the Z on my desktop.)  I can\'t seem to find information on that.

That\'s about it. If anyone can help, thanks!!! I am very DIY, so \"help\" in the form of links to instructions, how-tos, or other resources is great.

Software / Ogg-Vorbis: Zaurus: What file extension should I use?

Hah! Ooops, I didn\'t realize that so many others posted on how to use Vi.  Darn paged forums! I guess I\'m used to threaded news readers...

Ugh!  I really don\'t like vi... I tried those commands (from the URL tutorial above) and it wouldn\'t ever let me back into \":\" mode to type \"q!\".  \":q1\" was the first thing I learned in vi, so that I can leave without saving all of the mistakes I just made trying to edit a simple file in this unintuitive help-less gui-less editor program.

* ugh *

I feel like vi bashing, but I will forebear.  I\'m sure it\'s great once you learn all (and I mean ALL) of the commands... but until then, it is a headache.

You really don\'t need to know all of the Vi commands to use Vi.  Just a half dozen basics and one general concept.  Here are my four basic steps to using Vi right away (and you really only need the first three):

1) The main general concept is that Vi is \"modal\". You can only enter text in \"INSERT\" mode, otherwise you are in \"COMMAND\" mode.

2) If you do not know what mode you are in, press <ESC> Twice!  This will always put you in command mode.

3) To enter text (to go int \"INSERT\" mode), press \"i\" or \"a\" and then start typing. \"i\" will enter text BEFORE the cursor and \"a\" will enter text AFTER the cursor.

4) Use \"x\" to delete text in command mode.

That\'s it.  Learn other commands slowly over time; as you are already aware, there are a million.  But with the basics, using Vi is no harder than using Windows Notepad (the suckiest text editor on the planet, I might add).

General Discussion / Yeeeahah! I got an SL6000!
« on: May 04, 2004, 05:51:36 pm »
I\'m like a 10 year old boy. I actually went home late for lunch hoping that the UPS driver would come in the afternoon and waddyaknow? He did!

I am now the proud owner of a Zaurus SL6000 and a Linksys Wireless router.

More info and possibly a review will be forthcoing over the next few weeks.

Thanks, everyone, for your help in my decision making process!

why not treat yourself to an 860??

Garghhh!  I am so fscking sick and tired of listening to the self-appointed \"Clamshell Aristocracy\" around here.  I\'m glad you love your little Barbie-doll-sized laptops; really, I am.  But this poster asked several questions, each and every one pertaining to the SL-6000.

Maybe he doesn\'t want a device that isn\'t supported by Sharp outside Japan.
Quite true!

Maybe he doesn\'t want a device that is only about 35% screen.
well, the clamshell\'s screen looks pretty nice from the pix i\'ve seen

Maybe he wants a device that is at least minimally usable without tying up both hands.
good point

Maybe he wants 802.11b without sacrificing the CF slot.
definitely true

Maybe he wants a Z he can safely drop from waist height onto a concrete floor...?
nice! has anyone \"tried\" this?

Sorry for the rant, but I really am weary of the snide arrogance of some of ZUG\'s clamshell owners who seem to think a tablet model is just something to keep one\'s hand from shriveling up and falling off while waiting for a C860 to arrive from Japan hidden inside a hollowed-out pumpkin.
LOL.

My SL-5600\'s not perfect, but I wouldn\'t trade it for a boatload of smuggled CXX0\'s.
Thanks for all the helpful and insightful answers, everyone. I\'m definitely getting the SL6000 now.

General Discussion / SL6000 Questions and general Zaurus Q\'s
« on: April 30, 2004, 03:37:50 pm »
Hi all. I have several general questions about the SL6000.

1) Has anyone had success using USB devices with it? I know the specs say \"USB host compatible with Sharp products\" or something like that.  How about other (non-Sharp) products?

2) Has anyone installed OpenZaurus on the SL6000?

3) What is up with www.myzaurus.com? It appears to have stopped in time.  The latest news/info/updates on that site appear to be fro June, 2003.

4) What battery is the proper spare (model number, please) for the SL6000?

5) Should I just get the 5600 and save myself 300 bucks? (I saw a 5600 listed on Amazon for $289!!!)  Actuall, I will do the analysis on this one myself -- lessee, add in Wireles CF card, compare the screen size, hmmm... compute compute...I think I\'d go with the SL6000. But I just wanted additional impressions and comparisons between the new Zaurus and last year\'s Z.

6) Zaurus SL600 versus full-featured notebook. (e.g Dell Inspiron 1100, which I found refurbished for only around $800)  Pros/Cons?

Thanks, all.  I\'m sure I\'ll have plenty more questions.
