Sharp ROMs / Can OZ damage 5500?
« on: May 10, 2004, 06:59:40 pm »
OK, now I\'m totally baffled.  TKC ROM had many issues, including hanging, not displaying my astronomy app properly and wifi not working.  Originally, my Linksys WFC12 card was instantly recognized by the Sharp ROM 3.10, so I went back to that ROM.  Now the WFC12 card is not recognized and behaves differently at different times.  Most of the time I insert it, nothing happens.  Sometimes it blanks the screen, sometimes it scrambles the screen.  Once in a while, the green light flashes once and then stops.  Occasionally, I get the globe indicating that a wifi card is installed.  I\'m trying most of this without being near an access point, but before that was no problem.  The green light would flash for a minute or so before indicating there was no connection available. What is going on here?  I have set up networking.  I have also tried this being within range of active connections with the same, erratic behavour. As an aside, the problem with navigation in my astronomy program was solved by installing zstyle so that is working great.  If I could just get the 802.11 working again, I might be happy

Thanks for any help or insight on this issue

Hi,

You don\'t say what os you are running.  With the Sharp 3.10 ROM, mine was recognized immediately.  I went to the Sharp 2.38 ROM because of issues with other software I had and I got nothing but problems with the WFC12.  It took several tweaks to get it running and then it always acted very flaky.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.  Actually, I just flashed to the latest TK ROM and my astronomy program is behaving much better.  The biggest problem I was having with 2.38 was really flaky performance with the LinkSys WCF12 card.  I haven\'t been able to try it with the new ROM, but I inserted the card and it was recognized and identified immediately so I\'m feeling hopeful about that issue.

One reason I went with TK ROM was because my astronomy program is being marketed by The Kompany under a different name, so I figured it would work.  I\'m starting to think now that maybe some of the bugs I\'m seeing in my astronomy program are just bugs that the developer won\'t admit are there.  I\'m also glad to have Opera 6 back again.

Thanks again for the response.  I\'ll post again once I can check my wireless access and see how that works.  BTW, I love the new ROM - I\'m really glad I did it!

Sharp ROMs / Can OZ damage 5500?

Hello,

I recently purchased a used 5500 from a developer who was running Open Zaurus (unknown version) on it.  The seller flashed the Sharp 3.10 ROM to it before handing it over to me.  One of my main reasons for buying the Z was to run an astronomy program, Personal Sky Charts.  Personal Sky Charts never properly ran under 3.10.  Icons were missing, the html help file did not work and there were other assorted bugs.  The developer of the program had no idea why this was happening.  I finally flashed the 2.38 ROM and certain bugs disappeared, including a very important one that made navigation in the program much easier.  Other bugs (including missing icons and missing help file) remained although the program became very usable in spite of these remaining bugs.  However, with 2.38, I\'m having trouble with my Linksys WCF12 card.  I got it working, however, the connection is very flaky, usually lasting anywhere from 5-10 minutes and then dying.  I then need to either eject and reinsert the card or reboot the Z to get the connection working again. (I know it\'s not the connection because these are wireless cafes where I use my laptop with no problem.  They are using different ssids.) I am now looking at trying other ROMs to see if I can get both PSC and wireless access working on this machine.

My question is:  can a developer using Open Zaurus damage a pda to the point that flashing a new ROM won\'t repair it?  I come from a windows world where a re-format is like a new machine.  Is it the same with the Z?

Thanks in advance for any help or insight on this.  Also, if anybody can suggest an alternative ROM that might work, I\'d really appreciate it!
