General Discussion / The Archos AV500
« on: July 15, 2004, 03:28:38 pm »
Looks like possibly the next generation of PDA is coming along - complete with hard drive. The only real example of this is the little-known-about Archos AV500, which is the third evolution of their AV300 series, which are actually Portable Media Players (Although not running under Windows like the coming bout of them) but the difference with this one is that its actually got a touchscreen, which really breaches the door between the PMP and PDA, and on top of everything else running on the Zaurus'  QTopia environment.

You can read more on it at http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/337/C2626/ and http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/archives/000289.php

Just thought I'd show another device running Linux. That could be quite an exciting idea for the SL-960 (or whatever its going to be called)

I found on my 5500 that holding the "Fn" key and the "/?" keys together turned the numbers lock on or off.

Hope that helps

General Discussion / SL-C*** Alternatives?
« on: June 21, 2004, 02:56:44 pm »
I\'m sure that many people, before taking the plunge for one of the C-series, had a look at the alternatives. I am very interested in buying the C-750, I\'ve scraped together just about the right amount of money now, but none the less I would like to kno the alternatives, that offer the same landscape orientation (not nescessarily swiveling) at the same general size, so really in the miniature laptop catagory. Preferably with similar specs aswell. Apart from the Zaurus lines, I am also aware of the Sony Clie UX-50, and Sigmarion 3, and Sony Vaio U1 (yes I am aware this is a laptop but it is in the same size catagory and surprisingly price catagory, compared to the C-860) although there must be others as well.

This is just to make sure that my hard-earned money is going to something worthwhile, so could somebody name some alternatives, then show how the Zaurus is totally superior

Thanks to any potential helper as usual.

Cxx0 General discussions / Is the C700 worth it?
« on: June 16, 2004, 01:09:15 pm »
As no-one has yet replied, I\'ll add a bit to my question. From my SL-5500, I already have a 64mb sd card and a 256mb cf card. So would I be able to create a swap file on my sd card to compensate for the lack of internal RAM? Or would it still suffer considerably? I still have my SL-5500, so I am used to a short battery life! Do these help make the C700 a more attractive offer?
Last question: how well would pdaxrom run on the sd card with the aforementioned details?

The same questions from before still apply

P.S I found www.conics.net offering the C700 in the right price band

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Potentially stupid question
« on: June 16, 2004, 12:59:56 pm »
Now I\'m certain I\'m missing something very obvious here, but can you run Desktop Linux apps on your zaurus with pdaxrom? If not, can somebody direct me to a tutorial showing how you can recompile them. This could be a decision maker to see how difficult it is!
I only ask this because I see all these apps like Mozilla on the Zaurus and I was wondering how difficult it would be to port some more apps!

Thanks to whoever helps me in advance

General Discussion / Mange icons & tabs with Qtopia/Sharp ROM?
« on: June 13, 2004, 02:59:43 pm »
I installed \"Tab manager\" from killefiz.de/zaurus, which allows you to change icons and tabs easily. Sometimes if it isnt working you have to hold down the icon and check \"give root access\" but that only happened for me on certain roms.

Hope thats helpful

Software / Who has been able to get Stratagus (WarCraft2) to work?
« on: June 13, 2004, 05:14:18 am »
I\'m just trying this on my old 5500, and I was wondering if somebody could direct me to the .wc2 file? I have installed the recommended SDL and stratagus, but during the installation of stratagus numerous symlinks failed, but an icon still appears. If someone could possibly guide me through the rest of the installation i would be very grateful. (You all seem to be using the C-series)

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Dual boot setup
« on: June 12, 2004, 12:35:21 pm »
I\'ve just got the dual boot setup working, and I would like to express my gratitude to derekp and all the other people who have made this possible. You have no idea how much more useful this makes the Z! I was so relieved the first time openzaurus loaded up, and then when I removed my SD card the standard ROM appeared. Thank you all for doing something I dreamed of but didnt think possible on my 5500!

Phew........... I just consulted the unofficial zaurus faq, and I found my answer there; turns out there must have been a corrupt part (either the zImage or initrd.bin) and just by reflashing with the ospack my settings are back, which relieves me substantially.
Just when I was losing hope..............

Cxx0 General discussions / Is the C700 worth it?
« on: June 12, 2004, 08:05:37 am »
If you read my messages in the \"Dual Boot Setup\" thread, you may come to the conclusion, like I have, that I have bricked my SL-5500, (Which I am genuinely annoyed about) and the mere thought of not having another zaurus horrifies me - once you purchase one, you\'re not getting out!  So my questions are these: Where can you still purchase the C700 with an English OS? I dont want to tinker around in Japanese. What price is it? Hopefully it will be in the $400 range? Or is that far too little? I\'m not exactly full of money right at the moment, otherwise I\'d go for the C750 (unless its price drops a good amount)
I dont really want to just get another SL-5500 or SL-5600, as I\'d like to try out the different form factor, with the better screen and keyboard (and running pdaxrom   ) Is the C700 worth its value, or are you better off with a different model of similar price? And finally can it run all my 5500 applications?

For all I know I may not have bricked my Z, but I still want a change

Help, as usual, is appreciated,

Jem

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Dual boot setup
« on: June 12, 2004, 03:13:53 am »
Well as there were no replies and im very impatient, I downloaded a zImage from the openzaurus website, and followed reflashing instructions, and now when I boot up my Z with or without storage cards inserted, an openzaurus banner is displayed on a black background and the only other feature is a thin white band at the bottom. There is a blinking indicator which probably should be typing the start-up text. In the worst scenario I perform a hard reset and restore my settings. Obviously this should not of happened, but if anyone could help me I could be grateful.

-------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: I\'ve just tried a hard reset and the same screen still displays! I really need some help now!!

-------------------------------------------------
UPDATED UPDATE   Well using my CF reader/writer I tried to delete the zImage and initrd.bin, but it still freezes at the same screen. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Dual boot setup
« on: June 10, 2004, 12:48:47 pm »
Sorry, its me again. Thank you keithecampbell, now the scipt has sucessfully completed, so at least thats good. Now, this is probably just my naivety, but there is no zImage, so when I go to \"updateROM\" it says \"Image file is not found\". I have never flashed my ROM before, so I am new to this!   Do I need to download one of the zImages from www.openzaurus.org ?

Help is always appreciated

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Dual boot setup
« on: June 09, 2004, 01:09:31 pm »
I\'m trying to accomplish this using my 5500, with a 64mb sd card and a 256mb cf card, hopefully dual-booting to oz. Since i am a total newbie, I can\'t really troubleshoot on my own, so thats where you guys come in.......... (hopefully)..........
When I type as root:
# /usr/local/bin/modrom-dualboot.sh
all the stuff comes up with \"This will rebuild your existing rom to support dual-boot home-on-sd AND support dual-boot root-on-sd......\" and everything looks to be going ok, it goes on about the nodes etc. until it gets to this point:

Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done
copying current rom to temp image...
mkdir: Cannot create directory \'/tmp/tmp_src\': File exists
mkdir: Cannot create directory \'/tmp/tmp_dest\': File exists
Making modifications to new filesystem image.
Done making modifications
Building new initrd.bin
/usr/local/bin/mkcramfs: error while loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot load shared object file: No such file or directory
Problem creating image

And thats it. But I cannot find tmp_dest or tmp_src in /tmp, and unless my file manager is lying through its teeth, libz.so.1 does exist.

Any help is much appreciated, as usual

General Discussion / "File Creation Failed"
« on: June 06, 2004, 02:57:37 am »
I recently upgraded on my SL-5500 from the 2.38 rom to the 3.10 rom, and I have come into various difficulties when using the File Manager. I have tried to upload a custom set of icons, but when I try to paste them to /home/QtPalmtop/pics a message comes up saying \"Paste Failed\", and when I also try to create a new folder a message says \"Folder Creation Failed\". Neither can I, using the tab manager, move applications from one tab to the other, it just says \"Can\'t move application\". I am sure these are all interconnected, and there probably is a simple explanation

Thanks in advance to whoever helps me
