Singapore/Malaysia / GST/tax for overseas shipments to Singapore

7. You don\'t have to pay GST if you personally bring the zaurus in from overseas. Doe anyone else find it strange that you have to pay GST if the product was shipped to your home, whereas you don\'t have to pay GST if you bring it in yourself, even though in both cases, the transaction was made overseas?

Don\'t think that\'s entirely accurate.  Believe there is a $400 for carrying in new articles.  So if you are travelling, you can bring in new articles below $400 w/o paying GST, but above $400, you actually have to declare and pay GST.

Just that practically speaking, it is much easier for customs to stop a parcel than to check everyone walking thru for the total value of new items bought.

So strictly speaking, I think if you walk thru Customs with the Zaurus as a new/unused/sealed article, you are liable for GST.  However, if you\'ve started using it, perhaps that could be different?  Perhaps that could be treated as a personal effect and so not liable to GST?  Just my 2 cents worth.  I may be wrong tho\' so can always call Customs to check if you need to.

But the most important question though is -- have you gotten your Z yet?

Singapore/Malaysia / Screen protector - Overlay Brilliant
« on: June 09, 2004, 11:34:38 pm »
Nope.  Got the Martin Fields Overlay Plus.

Understand from other posts that the Miyavix Overlay Brilliant is clear whilst the Miyavix Overlay Plus is matt (ie non-reflective, so clarity suffers).  Don\'t confuse the MF Overlay Plus with the Miyavix Overlay Plus.  The MF Overlay Plus is clear!

Only thing I found was that it\'s quite a pain to apply perfectly and catch no bubbles or dust particles underneath.  But I found that although I can see these pretty clearly when the unit if off (because of the clear and reflective nature of the screen protector), once the screen is on, these can\'t be seen at all tho, so absolutely no problems with usage.

Although I am toying with the idea of going without any screen protector.  The plastic stylus appears sufficiently safe to use directly on the screen.  Has anyone scratched their screen using the provided stylus?

Singapore/Malaysia / Where to buy the Zaurus C series in Singapore?
« on: April 12, 2004, 05:30:08 am »
Mine was bought in a shop in Japan itself.  If you are not going there or don\'t know anyone going there, then you\'re left with the Internet.  Several possibilities there, but I have no experience with these people.  The names that come up frequently include:

(1) http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/
(2) http://shop.brando.com.hk/preorder_zaurusslc.php

There\'s also home@hightech-co.jp

Singapore/Malaysia / Where to buy the Zaurus C series in Singapore?

No shops carry it cos it\'s officially released in Japanese only and there\'s no official English version.  All the fellas who own the C series in S\'pore got it from external sources.  Also, note that Sharp Singapore will not be able to support you for servicing, etc.

But I say go ahead anyway!

xarope,
Any hope of a discount off the list price?

Read some comments on mypdacafe of people complaining of dust and scratches.  How\'s it for you so far?  And for how long?

Singapore/Malaysia / Screen protector - Overlay Brilliant

I have this funny feeling that the MF Overlay Plus may be Miyavix\'s Overlay Brilliant branded differently.  Why?  I took a close look at the photo of the MF package (http://forum.mypdacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=10557&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=20779078ef7c782955f22eef28510042) and saw the following:
- 90% light transmittance (same as Miyavix\'s Overlay Brilliant)
- washing under tap photo is the same as that found on the Miyavix website (but for their Overlay Plus product))

If not, then it may just be closer to Miyavix\'s Brilliants than the Plus because:
- MF Overlay Plus and Miyavix Brilliant both claim to be clear.  And from what xarope says, the MF is clear and the Miyavix Plus is milky.
- I am reading quite consistently good reviews of both the MF Overlay Plus and the Miyavix Overlay Brilliant but consistently not good reviews of the Miyavix Overlay Plus.

Think I\'ll give the MF a go.

xarope, if you ever want to replace with another MF, try the one for the Zodiac -- it\'s 84.5mmx57mm -- need to trim the height but width is exact.  Think I\'ll try that.

Singapore/Malaysia / Screen protector - Overlay Brilliant
« on: March 19, 2004, 01:37:10 am »
Anyone knows whether any shop in Singapore or Malaysia carries the Overlay Brilliant (by Miyavix) screen protector?

I am resigned to needing to cut down a screen protector to fit my C760, but would like to get the clearest possible one and Internet reviews of the Overlay Brilliant seem to be pretty impressive.

Or any other alternative brands to recommend for a clear view and which doesn\'t leave residue on the screen when peeled off?

Singapore/Malaysia / cheapest SL5500 in town?
« on: November 11, 2003, 01:39:37 am »
Just happened to pop by this forum.  otromen77, if you\'re still looking for an answer to your question, the answer is no, the 7xx is not avail in S\'pore.  The few of us who have it either got it in Japan or bought off an Internet retailer who can ship to S\'pore.

Doesn\'t seem to be many people around here.  You can try surfing the forums at externe.net to look for the Internet retailers that are frequently used by buyers.
