There were referring  to the comments on Slashdot.org

Warning there are a lot of them and Slashdot has been shown to be addictive - you have been warned

General Discussion / pros and cons of formating sd as ext2
« on: July 08, 2004, 12:14:35 am »
stu, you are right. it doesn't work. but that's not what i wanted to do anyways. so i am fine as long as i can symblink directories from the card to the main memory. :-)

General Discussion / help on keying some characters such as \ and `

stu, you rock! shift+@ indeed produces ` :-)

can you please also tell me how to change the font so that \ can be displayed instead of the yen sign?

thanks a mill!

General Discussion / help on keying some characters such as \ and `
« on: July 07, 2004, 10:41:28 pm »
my z is dynamism converted. and i can't find two most important keys for \ and `.

the \ which is above F is mapped to the Japanese yen and i just can't seem to find any key that can enter a ` as in DATE=`date +%y/%d`

i have written to dynamism but haven't  seen a reply yet. in the meanwhile, if any folks who know, i would appreciate your sharing the trick here.

General Discussion / pros and cons of formating sd as ext2

thanks guys for the information and advice. i decided to stick with fat16 and i have had no problem making symbolic links and etc.

some packages allow me to install to the card directly. for those that don't, i just install them to the internal main memory and then move the binaries to the card - i have a bin directory on the card and it is symlinked to /home/zaurus/bin and is in the path. so i have no problem executing programs from the card.

i just played the same tune on my z and a dell axim and an ipaq. i personally can\'t tell the difference in terms of quality. maybe that gives you some reference point?

General Discussion / pros and cons of formating sd as ext2
« on: June 21, 2004, 08:57:28 pm »
i just bought a 256MB SD card. thought i should hear opinions from fellow z users on the pros and cons of fat16 and ext2 on the card.

i guess one immediate advantage of using fat16 on the card is that i can insert it to a card reader attached to a windows desktop and access the data on the card conveniently.

but what about installing programs on the card? if i format it as ext2 and mount it, say, as /usr/local/bin, would that allow me to install programs on the card instead of in the internal memory?

your comments will be appreciated.

i basically do the samething. i use vim to write the journal and burp to encrypt it. i also have a password file - i know there are password management programs available. but i prefer to keep everything in one file.

My primary purpose for my Z (SL-6000) is notes. I keep a journal of my activities (Sys Admin, work, life in general). I use Zeditor for this.

Sharp ROMs / streaming movies of laptop over usb cable
« on: June 19, 2004, 02:13:43 pm »
Sorry for the late reply. My previous post only answered your question partially,i.e., how to stream from a laptop or desktop running windows, linux or mac os. VLC works well - I have been using that for a while from a w2k box and am able to receive video on my laptop.

I haven\'t figoured a way to view video on my Zaurus. The default player doesn\'t work. I also tried vlc but install failed.

I will keep you posted on my progress. And the sametime if you are lucky to make it work, please share your experience with us.  Thanks.

check out videolan at http://www.videolan.org/
you can use either vlc (client) or vls (server) to stream.
