New products and alternatives / $98 Zaurus Alternative: Hivision Mininote
« on: September 05, 2008, 04:14:46 am »
New on the IFA Berlin. This is insanely cheap. They really plan to ship it for $98.

Quick specs:
HiVision miniNote: MIPS based processor, WiFi, 1GB flash storage, 3 USB ports, Ethernet, SDHC card reader, audio in and out, voice-chat, skype, multi-tabbed Firefox browser. A sign on the video for a similar model shows: 400 MHz, 128/64 MB RAM, 1GB Nand Flash, 7" WVGA 800x480, 802.11 b/g.

On the down side might be that there is no support for Adobe Flash

Off Topic forum / Raedius Runs On Linux
« on: January 24, 2008, 01:56:55 pm »
Hi,

I just thought you should know this, as this is not mentioned in the public specs. I'm interested in the polymer display technology for some time already but today I came across this video at youtube which must haven been filmed on the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona some days ago. In the end of the video the guy asks what OS is running on it and sales representative says that it's Linux.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fwuq32Xd6ow...feature=related

Very cool and powerful mobile, just look at the specs:

http://www.polymervision.nl -> Learn More -> Key Features

OMG please let's hype it, so they stay with Linux... because the guy says in the end that there will be other OS options, too.

Well, the title says all... r197@C860-SP8. I did search the forum but I did not find anything. It's just that my volume is zero and I cannot move it up.

Is opie-reader available in a feed?
I'm using justreader but it does not look as nice as opie-reader under Cacko ROM, so it would be good to have opie-reader in pdaX as well.

But I cannot find it in the feeds.

Well, if I wouldn't be a pdaXrom user since almost two years, I also wouldn't know. It used to be in the old unstable feed. As this is not linked from the homepage anymore it is hard to find. Google found it because I still have got the ipk and I could search for the filename...

http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/cacko/pdaXrom/...0/rc5/unstable/

It is the best ebook reader for the Z and I'm using it every day. I hope it will make its way back into the main feed. But some people do work on it:

I hope it works for you

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Useful Applications
« on: November 22, 2006, 10:20:28 am »
Word Processing:
1) txt2tags + scite.  Easy wiki like tag notation, lightweight but powerful, many target formats from html to LaTex. With this I can keep my hands on the keyboard.
2) MoinMoin desktop wiki edition + konqueror embedded. For the organized notes, easy to rsync with my notebook MoinMoin wiki because it's file based.
SpreadSheet: Gnumeric! because there's no alternative. Painfully missing the Excel export (fails).
Browsers: Additionally konqueror embedded. It renders my MoinMoin wiki correctly but is much more lightweight than firefox
Email: Sylpheed because it's good enough
FTP: Don't need it
Text Editor: scite is great
PIM: GPE-PIM Suite is nice and lightweight.
PDF: xpdf but wanna try the alternatives
Dictionaries: don't need it.
IM: Gaim does it all.
Media Players: xmms, mplayer - anything they can't play back?
Graphics: GQView is enough for me.
File Managers: thunar as I'm using XFCE.
Terminal:  aterm and XFCE term.
Other Tools:
1) Opie-reader - for reading all my plucker documents. Together with sunrise and its firefox extension it makes web articles available for offline reading on my Z with a few clicks.
2) Gringotts - for all that passwords, CC numbers, etc on the go.
3) Planner - project planning for Linux - I use this on my notebook, too.
4) Sketchbook - for the quick and simple drawing
5) XFCE - because of eye candy
6) soundtracker - for some little music hacking

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Gpe Pim Apps
« on: August 22, 2006, 04:57:39 am »
I basicallly have synchronization GPE on pdaXrom <-> evolution working. I found the missing nsqld. The contacts don't sync because of database issues. Appointments and tasks are working fine except some minor issues. Tasks don't sync their status, for instance. But I keep on trying.

I had to take nsqld from this site: http://wing.nagaokauniv.ac.jp/wiki/index.php?files

Linux Applications / What PIM Apps do you use
« on: August 22, 2006, 04:51:13 am »
I used to use Kopi / Kapi as they are good PIM apps but they suck on the Z because they are too slow. It was always quite embarrassing to let people wait so long for telling me their contact details or appointment details until these apps are up and ready. Preloading takes too much resources.

So now I'm trying to get used to the GPE pim apps (on pdaXrom) which are quite lean, fast and feature rich enough. They pop up almost instantly. At the moment I am working on making them synchronize with evolution (via multisync) which basically works. I just have database issues with the contacts so they don't sync but tasks and appointments are working fine.

I finally spent the evening setting up and trying out the cross compiler.  The end result is gpesyncd.  This is the pda side of the gpe sync solution.  From what i understand you can only use this with opensync, which was not hard to build and setup.

If you want to give this a try this is what worked for me (at least well enough to sync evolution and gpe on my 6000.  You need a file in .gpe called gpesyncd.allow.  All it need to have in it is the ip address of the machines allowed to sync.  For example mine just says 192.168.129.1.  Then you need to run gpesynd from the command line with the -D switch to start it in Daemon mode.

gpesyncd -D

you will see a message about it starting up on such and such a port.

On the pc side you have to setup libopensync, the gpe plugin and what every other plugin you need.

Excellent work. Everything works out fine except that nsqld is missing. Without it there is no sync with the multisync gpe plugin. The plugin is trying to run nslqd on the Z (via ssh I guess).

I am trying to setup synchronisation (ubuntu dapper) multisync <-> zaurus (pdaXrom gpe apps OldBetas). I'm failing because I am missing nsqld. I tried the ipk for OZ but of cause it did not work. Could you, trich, please provide an updated version of your gpesyncd.tar.gz which includes nsqld. I think it is the last missing thing for me.

Probably it would be better to set up a new gpe-sync thread. I could do that and I would write a comprehensive HOWTO.

Cheers

Olaf

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Audacity, Zynaddsubfx, Seq24, Specimen And Porting
« on: January 18, 2006, 04:16:26 am »
Wow lmms looks promising.. But after the experience with beast I still doubt that the Z has got enough computing power... but let's try it.

I tried to compile it with the cross devkit. But I seems that there are problems with QT stuff:

Code: [Select]
In file included from audio_file_processor.cpp:64:
../../src/lib/embed.cpp: In function `QPixmap
   audiofileprocessor::getIconPixmap(const char*, int, int)':
../../src/lib/embed.cpp:68: error: `findEmbeddedData' undeclared (first use
   this function)
../../src/lib/embed.cpp:68: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only
once for each function it appears in.)

But I'll keep on trying.

I had a look at these apps but seq24's ui has non-resizable dialogues exceeding 640 by 480. That means you will never see the whole of it. This is a killer IMHO.... pity.

There is a port of beast in the unstable section of pdaXrom but it's damned slow.

Linux Applications / Building Visual Boy Advance
« on: September 09, 2005, 04:00:40 am »
I tried VisualBoyAdvance under pdaXrom and it's amazing to see it running but it's WAY TOO SLOW. It works but you can't play. Sometimes it's something like 5 fps I would estimate.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Octave 2.1 On Pdaxrom
« on: August 26, 2005, 05:42:29 am »
With the help of the pdaXrom Cross SDK and some little experience how to compile a software under linux (./configure, make all, etc.) it's quite easy to compile for your Z off your linux desktop. Try it, even if it's your first time you compile something by yourself. You will be rewarded with having always the newest version of the programs you wanna use.

User Request for Applications / Opie-reader Learns Speaking
« on: June 10, 2005, 01:11:07 pm »
I would like to port Opie-Reader 0.7i to pdaXrom to benefit from the flite support. Who can give me any hint how to do that. I would like to have a tarball which contents can compile. I
simply don't find the sources in the opie CVS.

A nice flite ipk source I found:
http://www.unpleasant.net/chris/zaurus/pda....2_armv5tel.ipk
(if you have troubles with flite, like 'can't open /dev/dsp' then just do 'killall esd')

cheers

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Problem - Irda With Ericsson R520
« on: May 27, 2005, 09:17:11 am »

I wish to adjust GPRS through Ericsson R520
Does not work or works very badly!

People advise to make here so:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_tx_window
echo 1000 > /proc/sys/net/irda/min_tx_turn_time

But max_tx_window not present in RC9
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=80287\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

With my SonyEricsson T610 I succeeded by doing:
echo 115200 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_baud_rate

Moreover I use 'ate0v1' as init string. It works nicely with GPRS and as GSM modem. I was doing the same trick you mentioned when I was running cacko 1.21b on my Z. Since I switched to pdaXrom, I just have to adjust the max baud rate and it works. Try playing around with xircp, I found out how things work when I tried to send files over irda.

But daemon1 is right. It's much better with BT. I'm just using irda when I really have to save every 'drop of juice'. Since I have a bluetooth CF card mobile internet started to be useful. I hated to adjust my phone and Z when fetching the latest news while sitting in the metro train. Now I really go online even when walking, with my mobile still in the pocket - that's so much more convenient. I didn't notice a much bigger power drain oin my Z but rather on my mobile. Moreover I attached a BT stick to my home server, so I have internet access over BT at home and enjoy reading news on my sofa while having much less power drain than with WiFi.

Hope that helps
