I agree...what do you need...

(You know, I'd buy OZ if it was "polished".  That would make history wouldn't it?  The first PDA OS that is completely independent of the PDA manufacturer.)

General Discussion / Sl-c3200: Vga Out = 2700g?
« on: March 16, 2006, 01:40:59 pm »
From: http://www.dynamism.com/sl-c3000/main.shtml
There's even an optional VGA-out connection, intended for people who want to use the Zaurus to give presentations.

Doesn't this mean that the SL-C3200 has a 2700G in it?

If so that equals 3D...now can I port quake III?

patience...I must be paitent...smack head with old ipaq...repeat

I'm dying out here...Mickey started the build on the 8th, it's now the 16th...does it take that long to build it?

any ideas when it will be available?

Also, someone put together a vmware build environment.  I was interested in a knoppix like build environment.  Here's a funding idea... I would pay $20 for a CD(or DVD) of the distribution and build environment.  Heck I'd buy that every release just to have them.  That would give the dev's a little more moola and us dialup users a little more sanity.  Any comments?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Does Zaurus Or Oz Support Rs232 "wake On Ring"
« on: March 01, 2006, 06:48:31 pm »
Ok my fusion of the cell phone & zaurus is taking new turns...
(wow what a long process, been trying to get this right since 2003)

Does the Zaurus hardware &/or 2.4.x support serial port wake on ring?  Ie can I suspend and then wake up when the serial port gets traffic on it?

anyone know if the serial cables for older cell phones(Motorola V66) provide an AT environment like the Audiovox RTM-8000 CF GSM/GPRS card does?

(my cf card provides a nice RING output when someone calls..unfortunately suspending the Z powers down the CF card and of course stops my "phone" from working..."no inbound calls in suspended mode" cannot be considered a feature no matter how hard I try...

Hardware Mods / Ram Upgrade

so... the ram chips are in sockets, not soldered to the board?

NOPE that's the problem.  BGA stands for ball grid array.  (If I understand) It's a whole bunch of little balls that are(can be) seperate from the chip and the motherboard.  My understanding is that the motherboard and the chip have little divets where the ball fits in.  BUT they still use solder.  I think the process uses a reflow oven and it heats the solder just enough to attach to the balls/chip/motherboard and then the excess solder is washed away.

MOST of this is probably wrong...ask an expert, Im not.

So imagine very tiny things hidden way into the center of the chip.  If you don't use their process, there's basically no other way to do it.

(yes people make there own reflow ovens but that's just emulating the official process)

Modifying the board after its completed is called "rework" and if I'm correct, it's gotten harder and harder and harder with each new generation of chip packaging (dip, smt, bga).

Search google for "bga rework" if you wanna know how hard this is...

Nice job on the light.  I'd like to add one to my SL-5500, but my wife would hate me surfing the net from our bed...

Did the "wireless" mod include internal wifi?  Is that on a 6000?  or is that a CF card?

Hardware Mods / Ram Upgrade
« on: November 30, 2005, 07:40:45 pm »
maslovsky,
1- did you have to run any extra traces or was it a simple remove old BGA memory and add the new ones?
ie- remove old BGA's
     add new BGA's
reboot with old kernel, works but only 64mb
     recompile kernel with patches
     reboot with new kernel, 128mb?

2- do you know if this type of memory can be used on older Z's like the SL-5500(which also uses BGA)

3- did you do an battery life impact study?

4- do you know of a site where we can buy those mem chips?

Hardware Mods / 128 Mb Flash Upgrade
« on: November 30, 2005, 07:12:30 pm »
aiSome random ideas...
SL-5000 and 5500 are similar, dump the 5500(BGA ram I know I've seen mine), use a 5000(SMT ram) and upgrade the RAM from 32mb to 128mb by removing the 32mb's or maybe 32mb to 96mb by piggybacking the originals with larger ones.

For the BGA people(SL-5500, C-xxxx) -  How about destroying the existing ram as you remove the BGA chips, making a BGA to smt shim, then soldering wires or SMT chips to the shim.  The reason this might be doable, is that my guess is that chip sacrificial removal of the BGA is easier than trying to save it but you'd still be left with the BGA soldering of the shim.  After the shim is soldered you'd be able to solder/remove the SMT without damaging the main board.  Ie another layer to dissipate heat.  Only one risky operation...

Now the 64,000 dollar question.
Why doesn't anyone sell a PDA with more memory?  They all max out at 64mb.  I know that WinCE does XIP - execute in place.  That's where the program can actually run directly from the flash.  That gives WinCE a much larger pool of memory for running programs(ie theoretically only heap and stack are in RAM, the rest stays in flash).  Linux on the other hand doesn't do XIP(ok so it's being added to 2.6 but it aint there yet).  It loads the program code into RAM first before executing.

So we're left with the assumption, more RAM = less battery life.  PDA's for average users are all about battery life.

BUT sharp users aren't "average" users.  WHY DOESNT SHARP REALIZE 128MB is WORLDS BETTER THAN 64mb.

Sorry about the shouting just dreamed they might actually hear it...

Hardware Mods / Transplanting Screen From 6000 Into 3100
« on: November 30, 2005, 06:27:31 pm »
Another idea is to scan ebay for broken Z's.

I bought a sl-5500 for $25 bucks.

Typically what happens is "people forget that they have opposable thumbs", drop the Z, scren goes into "you're really ugly, I'm going to commit hari-kari" mode, and viola a perfectly functional Z that you can't read.  Still usually fully functional(poweron logon USB ...)

Get a clamshell that has had an unenlightened owner and you have a cheap machine for hardware hacking.

Good luck
Bill
ps- now to figure out how to get dual CF and a USB host into my 5500...
pps- anyone thought of hacking a sandisk wifi/cf into a gprsmodem/microdrive combo?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Can The Kernel Support 8 Memory Banks?
« on: October 06, 2005, 02:53:59 am »
ok where to start...
well I bought a broken SL-5500...$25
screen's toast
came with battery, maybe I'll get something out of my money
plug it in, battery light comes on, but without a CF card in it C+D+reset doesnt light any lights up
maybe I should have tried with a CF before I disassembled...

ok so the bad news...
Samsung k4s561633c-rl75 two of them

why is that bad news?
can you say "CSP"
can you say "worse than BGA"

So what did we learn?
http://www.halfsane.com/zaurus/hw/ doesnt say which model the pictures are of and my guess is that it's a SL-5000D
and
http://www.tekprosystems.com/zaurus/internals.htm says it's a SL-5500...BUT though it looks very very similar, the picture http://www.tekprosystems.com/images/zaurus/zguts1.jpg shows 2 memory chips of 16MB size not 32MB size and they have pins(damn them) whereas mine have CSP chips(double damn them).

What's Sharp got against a 128mb hand held?

It might be easier to upgrade a 32MB SL-5000D to 128MB than to take a SL-5500 to 128MB...

I thought you could but...this will probably not be a DIY memory upgrade.

www.pocketpctechs.com has told me they'd do it but the kernel/bootloader had to be rewritten.
I still have the email address if anyone has $200 they want to spend...

so I'm giving up on the memory expansion...

the next question...can I rig up the CF slot so that a single slot can support a GPRS modem or WiFi card and a microdrive...  (notice the modem part there are no combo flash/gprs modem solutions)

or possibly hack in the USB host somewhere but it'll be too slow...

oh the delima...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Full Debian Linux On Zaurus Sl-5500 Etc
« on: September 27, 2005, 07:06:48 pm »
just to chirp up for my sl-5500

yes I have a 206mhz cpu but so far no ones ported a decent opengles or written any games that need it...

oh yeah, and even though I can run seti @ whereever I'm standing, I'm not going to trust the news about little green aliens until I get a chance at Seven of Nine...

Oh and memory, "most" SL-5500's have 64mb SDRAM just like all of the newer Z's (sharp, why don't you offer one with 128mb - we'll jump on it, by the way with the SL-C3000 and C3100 do you know if the CF card supports DMA?  ie whats the transfer speed, can I swap on it effectively?)

(I said "most" because there are some rumors of people with 32mb SL-5500's)

my dream Z?
- 128mb SDRAM
- huge battery (gotta talk to that guy in russia)
- host USB
- dual slot CF (or built in microdrive)
- 8gig microdrive(ok I drool over a 4gig but I am dreaming)
- built in 802.11g 108mb
- video out
- sd io 4 bit - but why do I wish for that, if the above are avail my sd card will only be for camera syncing
- built in cell phone quality microphone/earphone or bluetooth
- built in stereo headphone output jack

anyone need anything else?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Can The Kernel Support 8 Memory Banks?
« on: September 07, 2005, 03:38:43 am »
oh yeah page 120 shows a "General Memory Interface Configuration"
it shows 4 DRAM banks of either 16 or 32 bit wide memory
so I'm guessing 4 banks is all we get...

anyone got any 512Mbit SDRAMs they wanna loan me?

really though, anyone have a busted screen Z?  ie still works but screens messed up.  Need it to test on...
