Asus Eee PC / Any Comments Yet On The Asus Eee-pc?
« on: September 24, 2007, 11:55:15 am »
Has anyone seen the new ASUS EEE-PC yet?

It's a light laptop using a 16 gig flash instead of a spinning disk hard drive and it comes with Linux installed. CPU is supposedly a Pentium M.

This is an outgrowth of Intel's design response to the One Laptop Per Child project because OLPC has designed their system around an ADM chip. Interestingly, the OLPC XO will come on the market in November with a Give One, Get One program. http://www.xogiving.org/

Hi,
I am using TI OMAP 5912.

Are there any open source SDIO Drivers available on Linux.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

There are absolutely no opensource drivers available for SDIO on linux.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=121588\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

But there is Linux support for some SDIO hardware:

Socket Communications says its wireless SDIO cards are now supported under Linux, thanks to proprietary SDIO stacks...

And Zaurus?

1. Make OpenSimpad.org into the best and most complete reference site for the Simpad.

2. Copy information from German language and Polish language sites so that it is available in English.

3. Tell us all about the WIN-CE releases that work on the Simpad too.

4. Explain the how OpenSimpad software is related to Familiar and Angstrom software and point to the most useful sections of the other websites.

5. Get rid of the OpenSimpad forum and point to this forum instead.

6. But don't delete the old forum!!! Look through it for the best and most useful information and post it in a series of new threads on this forum.

C1000/3x00 Hardware / Charging Via Usb?
« on: July 28, 2005, 09:36:49 am »
While we are on the topic of charging via the USB port, does anyone know whether there are battery powered hubs available? Seems to me that the hub electronics wouldn't add much size to an external battery pack that runs off 4 rechargeable AA batteries.

SIMpad forum / Serial Keyboard For Simpad
« on: July 26, 2005, 11:14:08 am »
You need a serial keyboard like the ones used with older PALMs before Bluetooth keyboards became popular. There is a driver for the OPIE Simpads that will work with some serial keyboards. It is called QPE-Flexis so presumably it will work with any of the roll-up flexible keyboards that used to be sold under the Flexis brand. This keyboard is still being sold but it has a completely different name now. In any case, it is a rubber type material that you can literally roll up into a cylinder the size of a toilet roll tube.

I did manage to find a serial keyboard for my old Palm V on ebay earlier this year and there were several auctions to choose from. That may be the best bet.

General Discussion / Opie And Qtopia - A New Hope ?
« on: May 19, 2005, 10:07:19 am »
Why all this talk about OPIE vs. Qtopia?

OPIE is an embedded Linux project. Qtopia is a Linux GUI project. Completely different beasts.

Will Trolltech be supporting the WRT54G, ASUS WLAN500G, Linksys NSLU2 or other embedded devices that have *NO* *FRAMEBUFFER*????

Of course they won't. Because Trolltech builds GUIs and GUI environments and GUI-Linux packages for portable devices. They support everything from desktops through mobile phones.

On the other hand, OPIE is an offshoot of OpenEmbedded which is an embedded Linux system for small devices with limited hardware. Some of them have a GUI and some of them don't. And soon, some of the devices with no framebuffer may actually have a GUI by using a USB-VGA adapter if the people working on PEPLINK MANGA manage to reverse engineer a certain Linux driver.

The biggest repository of Simpad info, including PDFs of the manuals and photos of the interior, is on a Polish server. I can't remember where this is but if you go to Google and try a search with the site: keyword, then it should pop up.

Simpad site:.pl

That means look for the word simpad on sites with a URL ending in .pl

General Discussion / Motorola E860

Does anyone have one of these Linux smartphones?  Do you know of English-speaking suppliers who can ship one internationally?

Here is a review for those who want to know more:

I own a Sharp GX 15 because I like the nice bright screen. Same technology as the Zaurus C700. However, it is not a QTopia device. It makes more sense for these forums to focus on QTopia devices like the Motorola e680 phone which runs Linux. Currently this is mostly sold in China which is why most info on it is in Chinese sites like this http://www.whensite.com/

However, people are buying them outside China and the e680i will soon be available offcially in Europe. It would be nice if some people who can read Chinese would translate some of the most useful info into English. Or if someone with time on their hands would try working through things with a translator or just trolling through that site looking for bits of info in English.

Contrary to popular opinion, you can install Linux software on that phone and people are using it with telnet and things like GBA emulators.

General Discussion / Zaurus Replacement?
« on: April 26, 2005, 09:56:11 am »
This is more like the kind of PC that would compete with Zaurus.

http://www.flybook.biz/?section=home&lang=en

For one thing, it can run Linux which means that any application you can run on the Zaurus can run on the flybook, assuming that the source code is available so that it can be recompiled for x86. It will be interesting to see if people start coming out with ARM-based systems similar to flybook because that would mean binary compatibility with all the Linux PDAs.

Here is how to run Linux on the flybook:  http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Dialogue_Flybook

The immage that I chose doesn't show the keyboard because it has been folded back, just like on a Zaurus. But it does show the relative size of the flybook.

General Discussion / Specification Of "new" Linux Handhelds
« on: April 11, 2005, 02:48:22 pm »
Why should they build WiFi, Bluetooth or GPRS into the device when all of these are already available as add-on cards?

The idea of having 2 CF slots is a good one since that allows people to configure a device with a comms card (modem, ethernet, wifi, bluetooth, GPRS) of their choice as well as a hard drive if they want one. And if they need to copy files from CF cards from their camera, they can remove the comms to do the copy. There should be no extra chipcount to add a 2nd CF port.

Full SDIO is a good idea as is full USB host support.

But why bother with this RFP in the first place? This is not how manufacturers evolve their products. Sharp has shown a steady progression of features from model to model. It is a nice modular device that can be expanded in many ways. The main failing of Sharp is that they don't do enough to encourage the 3rd party add-on market. After all Sharp could sell bundles of Zaurus with wifi card or GPRS card with minimal hassle by just taping the card box to the zaurus box. A lot simpler than engineering it into the device and then losing sales because not everyone wants to pay for the unneeded comms capability.

When they were introduced around 1000 EUR. When the grand sell out came they went for around 350 EUR. Nowadays I wouldn't pay more than 250 EUR for a new one.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=70483\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Typically the german ebayers sell the Simpad for less than the UK ebayers. However, prices do fluctuate all the time. There is one UK seller with a 160 pound reserve who seems to have acquired an inventory of nearly new simpads. But used ones should be less.

I just found this link and it seems to indicate that SDIO is available on the C3000.  Can some of our Japanese-capable member help?

http://support.ezaurus.com/sl-c3000/qa/qa-...ucho-01.asp#a10

Use a site with the Amikai translator. It is the best one. For instance this site http://www.infoseek.co.jp/Honyaku?pg=honyaku_top.html

However, your URL won't work unless you remove the #a10 at the end. Paste the URL into the WEB area of the form. Then select the second radio button beside the English flag. And then press the web button to translate. You can click on links in the translated version and they will be translated and then loaded for you.

The page refers to a Japanese Air-H card which is a Japan-only wireless technology. The AH-S101S card is listed on the Conics website here http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-c3000/
